Prediction And Observation Of Pore Pressure Due To Pile Driving, S. Chandra, Md. I. Hossain

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In this study, pore pressure response due to pile driving has been observed in the field. Cavity Expansion theory using critical state parameters of the soil has been used to predict the trend of the pore pressure development and dissipation. Parametric study has been carried out to know the sensitivity of various parameters on the predicted results. A comparison has been made between the predicted and observed results.

Variation In Capacities Of Different Pile Types Under Similar Soil Conditions, H. Senapathy, J. R. Davie, M. R. Lewis Jun 1993

Variation In Capacities Of Different Pile Types Under Similar Soil Conditions, H. Senapathy, J. R. Davie, M. R. Lewis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The interaction between soil and various pile types is of interest because it depends not only on the shear strength characteristics of the soil, but also on the pile dimensions, shape, and installation method, and on time after pile installation. This paper presents load test results from three types of displacement piles installed at the same site. The results obtained from the tests are compared with theoretical estimates. The computed values of soil-pile adhesion, back-calculated from the load tests, are discussed and compared with values found in the literature. Estimated pile capacities during driving and retap are also compared and …

Dynamics Of Rockfalls In Sri Lanka And Landslide Hazards, R. K. Bhandari, K. Jeyatharan, A. Raviskanthan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper spotlights the dynamics of rockfalls and debrisflows in Sri Lanka in the backdrop of some recent examples and discusses the appropriateness of simple energy dissipation systems in situations where source of rockfall is either intractable or difficult to arrest. The question of runout of rockfalls usually significant in the assessment of their damage potential is also discussed and importance of such estimate is highlighted in the context of landslide hazard zonation mapping.

Evaluation And Remediation Of A Small Landslide In Colluvium, D. T. Mooney, J. J. Bowdes Jr. Jun 1993

Evaluation And Remediation Of A Small Landslide In Colluvium, D. T. Mooney, J. J. Bowdes Jr.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A landslide in colluvium near Grafton, West Virginia was evaluated for cause and remediation. Monitoring was conducted for 15 months to observe further movements prior to remediation. The observed failure surface, slide geometry and groundwater conditions were used to back-solution for an effective residual friction angle ( φr’) . The φr’ was found to agree well with index property correlations cited in the literature. Slope failure resulted from excessive pore water pressures due to seasonably high groundwater levels. Stability analyses using the back-solutioned φr’ were performed to design and position seepage cutoff drains for …

Large Scale Instrumental Test Embankment On Uranium Tailings, J. L. Santiago, T. Barrera, M. Pastor Jun 1993

Large Scale Instrumental Test Embankment On Uranium Tailings, J. L. Santiago, T. Barrera, M. Pastor

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The remediation of an inactive uranium mill tailings pile at the town of Andujar (Spain) has provided an opportunity to investigate the settlement characteristics of hydraulically-deposited uranium mill tailings. A test embankment was constructed on top of the existing tailings deposit and total stresses, settlements and pore pressures were measured. Settlements and pore pressure data were compared with the results obtained using an elastoplastic numerical model which allows the simulation of two dimensional consolidation processes. Backcalculated consolidation parameters were derived to provide agreement between the calculated and measured settlements and pore pressures. These parameters could then be used to predict …

Stabilization Of A Tailings Dam By De-Watering, A. B. Fourie, G. I. Mcphail Jun 1993

Stabilization Of A Tailings Dam By De-Watering, A. B. Fourie, G. I. Mcphail

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The failure of the outer slope of one of the paddocks of a tailings dam, resulted in a significant decrease in the area available for tailings deposition. Overloading of the remaining five paddocks resulted. To maintain the stability of the existing dam whilst construction of new disposal facilities was in progress, three techniques were investigated; horizontal, push-in drains at the dam toe, a rock buttress around the operational paddocks, and vertical de-watering wells installed on the first terrace, or ‘step-back’ of the dam. De-watering wells proved most effective, and 165 wells were installed. A monitoring programme included regular determination of …

Moisture And Mineralogy Aspect Of Clayey Materials, Sanga Tangchawal Jun 1993

Moisture And Mineralogy Aspect Of Clayey Materials, Sanga Tangchawal

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Problems of clayey mass stability are mainly due to swelling behavior and strength reduction of clayey soils and rocks. Laboratory measurements were carried out on various clayey materials to obtain their engineering properties related with the performance of clays in nature. The author demonstrated statistical relationships among material index and material properties. Review of geotechnical mechanisms concerning moisture and mineralogy effects was also given.

Consolidation Study Of An Active Tailings Pond, B. F. Ulrich Jun 1993

Consolidation Study Of An Active Tailings Pond, B. F. Ulrich

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Two geotechnical site investigations using state-of-the-art equipment for insitu testing have been made of a single tailing pond. The two separate investigations were made at an interval of approximately three years between studies. Each investigation included such tests as piezocone, self-boring pressuremeter, field vane shear, and standard penetration tests. The purpose of these tests was to establish various strength and phreatic characteristics of the tails in the deposit for use as input design parameters in the proposed upstream embankment expansion. This data may also be used to show a time-based consolidation study of a fully-drained, active tailing deposit. As tests …

Comparison Between Finite Element Predictions And Results From Dynamic Centrifuge Tests On Tilting Gravity Wall Retaining Dry Sand, A. S. Al-Homoud, R. V. Whitman Jun 1993

Comparison Between Finite Element Predictions And Results From Dynamic Centrifuge Tests On Tilting Gravity Wall Retaining Dry Sand, A. S. Al-Homoud, R. V. Whitman

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

An analytical model is developed to analyze the seismic response of gravity walls retaining and founded on dry sand, with special emphasis on tilting behavior. A well verified two-dimensional finite element code is used for this purpose. The analytical model is verified comparing predictions to results from three dynamic centrifuge tests, with satisfactory agreement. Moreover, sensitivity analyses are carried out for one of the centrifuge test conditions to understand how the results would change if the boundary conditions and rotational stiffness of the wall were changed.

Earthquake Damage To Fill Dams, S. Tani Jun 1993

Earthquake Damage To Fill Dams, S. Tani

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Earthquakes have caused much damage to fill type dams. Research into earthquake damage has contributed to the study of earthquake resistance of dams. However damage to fill dams occurred almost only to small scale earth dams, especially the few cases of heavy damage. This report describes the damage and performance of fill dams more than 15m-high during earthquakes, drawn from literature, data, and field surveys. The results indicate that even stronger earthquakes than the design earthquake intensity did not cause heavy damage to large well-constructed modern dams. The above analysis of the performance of fill dams during earthquakes shows that …

Mitigation Of Seismically Induced Slope Movement, Craig S. Shields, Frank L. Rollo Jun 1993

Mitigation Of Seismically Induced Slope Movement, Craig S. Shields, Frank L. Rollo

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Ground shaking during the Lorna Prieta earthquake of 17 October 1989 caused permanent lateral and vertical displacements of a steep hillside in San Francisco, California. These displacements damaged 36 residences along the top of the hillside. Subsequent exploration and analyses indicated the hillside is composed of loose to medium-dense Dune sand that is marginally stable under static conditions, but highly susceptible to ·movements during ground shaking caused by earthquakes. A retaining system consisting of a combination of drilled soldier piles and permanent tiebacks was designed and constructed to mitigate the potential for future seismically induced slope movement. This paper describes …

Investigation Of Traffic Induced Ground Vibration By Random Process Theory, J. Benčat Jun 1993

Investigation Of Traffic Induced Ground Vibration By Random Process Theory, J. Benčat

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The ground motion is caused by vibration propagation due to moving vehicles. Ground vibration recorded at a distance from a busy roadway or railway is analyzed assuming it to be a random and statistically stationary function of time. The soil media are characterized as the visco- elastic halfspace. The analytical method for predicting ground vibration has been described. The spectral density of ground vibration for a particular case was calculated and the prediction is validated by experimental measurement.

Predictions Of The Behavior Of A Deep Braced Excavation, Jeen-Shang Lin, J. G. Deng

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper describes in detail a prediction about the responses of the soil and the RC diaphragm wall of a deep excavation in Taipei. The 21.8 m excavation was the deepest at the time, and it served as a good basis for testing previous back analysis results. As instrumentation records became available, updates were made and were passed to the contractor for the construction control purpose. The prediction was considered as a success.

Pressure Relief Tunnel System At Us22/Sr7 Interchange, Oh, J. R. Graham, R. W. Humphries, J. M. Fuller, G. M. Elliott Jun 1993

Pressure Relief Tunnel System At Us22/Sr7 Interchange, Oh, J. R. Graham, R. W. Humphries, J. M. Fuller, G. M. Elliott

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Construction of the US22/SR7 interchange in Steubenville, OH resulted in the need to excavate the toe of the steep 350 ft. high slope overlooking the Ohio River. To maintain the stability of the slope, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) chose to construct a 4 tier, 130- ft. high, 2,200 ft. long tieback anchor retaining wall. During the design phase, it became apparent that reductions in both the tieback loading and cost could be realized by lowering the groundwater levels in the hillside. A Pressure Relief Tunnel System (PRTS) was selected from several drainage options. The PRTS consists of a …

Construction of a 23m wide, 57m high, and 210m long underground power house cavern is in progress as a part of the multi-purpose Sardar Sarovar Project in India. The rock mass around the cavern is basalt which is intruded by a number of dolerite dykes. In view of the high side walls of the cavern, and the presence of a 1 to 2m thick shear zone running across the cavern width, a comprehensive approach was worked out for estimation of the wall support requirements. The approach included estimation of the roof support requirements using the four available approaches, and comparison …

Preloading Wastewater Treatment Plant Tanks, K. Lowery, A. N. Wagh, J. B. Falcon Jun 1993

Preloading Wastewater Treatment Plant Tanks, K. Lowery, A. N. Wagh, J. B. Falcon

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Storage tanks for a wastewater treatment plant were stage-loaded on weak compressible fine-grained soils. The in situ silt and sand layers/pockets present in the fine-grained soils were theorized to create sufficient drainage paths, so that the use of sand or wick drains were not required. Although the silt and sand layers/pockets were found to be discontinuous, "hydraulic fracturing" was expected to develop continuous drainage paths. A review of the extensive field investigation and geotechnical optimization of the site is presented. Details for the evaluation of the shear strength of the soils, the stage loading schedule and predicted settlements during loading …

Surcharging Of Organic Silt Using Prefabricated Vertical Drains, T. H. Bedenis Jun 1993

Surcharging Of Organic Silt Using Prefabricated Vertical Drains, T. H. Bedenis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A new Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) basin was constructed in Saginaw, Michigan. The project required an 8.5 foot (2.6 m) diameter connecting sewer to be constructed under a 12 foot (3.7 m) high stockpile of spoil from the excavation for basin. The soil profile at the site contained a 32 foot (9 .8 m) thick layer of compressible organic silt. Since the weight of the stockpile was anticipated to cause settlement of the sewer, a surcharge was placed to preconsolidate the organic silt prior to construction of the sewer. Analysis indicated prefabricated vertical (PV) drains would be required to achieve …
