In Efforts to Evaluate the Use of Plants as a Forensic Tool for Delineating Contaminated Soil and Groundwater, a Laboratory Experiment and a Field Sampling Effort Were Undertaken. Site Assessments Are Often Costly and Inaccurate, Requiring Multiple Mobilizations to Hone in on Source Areas and Getting Accurate Estimates of Contaminant Extent and Distribution. as These Extensive Site Delineations Take Place, Valuable Time and Resources Are Lost. the Findings of This Study Show that Plants Can Be Used as a Tool to Evaluate a Variety of Subsurface Contaminants, Either in the Vadose Zone or in the Saturated Zone. in the First …
Anchorage And Bond Characteristics Of Externally Bonded Frp Laminates Used For Shear Strengthening Of Rc And Pc Girders, Carlos Andres Ortega Ordonez
Anchorage And Bond Characteristics Of Externally Bonded Frp Laminates Used For Shear Strengthening Of Rc And Pc Girders, Carlos Andres Ortega Ordonez
Masters Theses
"In the last three decades, the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials to strengthen structures externally has emerged as one of the most promising technologies in materials and structural engineering, and these materials have been gaining popularity in the civil engineering community. Externally bonded FRP sheets and laminates have been used successfully to increase flexural and shear capacity. The overall performance of the strengthened system depends heavily on the quality of the bond between the concrete and the FRP laminate. Low bond strength can cause delamination at the fiber-matrix interface and at the FRP laminate-concrete interface. As a result, …
An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Actuated Signal Timing Optimization Under Lane-By-Lane Detection Condition, Eric G. Strack
An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Actuated Signal Timing Optimization Under Lane-By-Lane Detection Condition, Eric G. Strack
Masters Theses
"Motivated by the need to reduce congestion on the nation's roadway network, this research seeks to determine when a new detection scheme at actuated signalized intersections may help. This new detection scheme is called lane-by-lane detection. It "looks" at traffic in all lanes individually to determine the traffic volume on the roadway. Specifically, the problems addressed are investigating alternate signal timings and investigating the traffic volume's effect on performance of the detection scheme. For the alternate signal timings, an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) was employed to identify the optimal signal timing. This algorithm creates signal timings and tests them in the …
Het-Cam For The Identification Of Ocular Irritancy In Seawater/Salt Water Sources, Alexander Clovis Winters
Het-Cam For The Identification Of Ocular Irritancy In Seawater/Salt Water Sources, Alexander Clovis Winters
Masters Theses
"The Hens Egg Test on the Chorionallantoic Membrane (HET-CAM) is an ocular irritation test proposed to replace tradition ocular investigations such as the Draize eye test that has been criticized because of its use of animals. In this study, the ocular irritation potential of seawater and saltwater sources dosed with different disinfectants has been evaluated using the HET-CAM. The seawater and salt water tested was taken from the main show pools from three aquatic theme parks (San Diego, San Antonio, and Orlando). The three disinfectants considered were sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)₂), and ozone (O₃).
Three different HET-CAM methods …
Seismic Behavior Of Circular Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns Under Combined Loading Including Torsion, Suriya Prakash Shanmugam
Seismic Behavior Of Circular Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns Under Combined Loading Including Torsion, Suriya Prakash Shanmugam
Doctoral Dissertations
"Reinforced concrete (RC) columns of skewed and curved bridges with unequal spans and column heights can be subjected to combined loading including axial, flexure, shear, and torsion loads during earthquakes. The combination of axial loads, shear force, and flexural and torsional moments can result in complex failure modes of RC bridge columns. This study carried out experimental and analytical studies to investigate the seismic performance of circular RC columns under combined loading including torsion. The main variables considered here were (i) the ratio of torsion-to-bending moment (T/M), (ii) the ratio of bending moment-to-shear (M/V) or shear span (H/D), and (iii) …

Time-Weighted Average Solid-Phase Microextraction (Twa-Spme) For In-Planta Detection Of Chlorinated Solvents, Emily Moore Sheehan
Masters Theses
"Recent interest in the use of phyto-mapping for plume delineation at contaminated sites has promoted a need for new and innovative sampling techniques. Solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) methods have been developed as a chemical analysis tool offering fast, simple, non-invasive sampling without the use of solvents. In this study SPME devices were tested for applicability for in-planta detection of chlorinated solvents. To evaluate the use of SPME for VOCs in-planta a number of integrated studies were undertaken. Uptake profiles were developed for nine chlorinated solvents in a liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix with 100 µm Carboxene SPME fibers. Timeweighted average (TWA) sampling …
Comparison Of In-Planta Sampling Methods For Delineating Groundwater Contaminants, Kendra Marie Waltermire
Comparison Of In-Planta Sampling Methods For Delineating Groundwater Contaminants, Kendra Marie Waltermire
Masters Theses
"Plants directly interact with surrounding water, air, and soil, collecting and storing chemicals and elements from the surrounding environment. Two new and innovative sampling methods have been developed in which this valuable data can be accessed to replace as well as supplement contaminated-site investigations. When determining the extent of the plume on a contaminated site, groundwater sampling may be limited due to time, site access, and expense. Using new techniques that place sampling devices in trees on site, we can sample trees naturally occurring on a contaminated site or those planted in phytoremediation or redevelopment efforts. Using these sampling devices, …
Risk Indexes For Draft Ccl3 Chemicals, J. Alan Roberson, Matthew Lueders, Craig Adams, Jeffrey S. Rosen
Risk Indexes For Draft Ccl3 Chemicals, J. Alan Roberson, Matthew Lueders, Craig Adams, Jeffrey S. Rosen
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
To supplement the processes used for developing the draft third Contaminant Candidate List (CCL3) and better inform decisions made by the US Environmental Protection Agency on future CCLs, the authors offer an evaluation tool for efficiently synthesizing, visualizing, and organizing data for effective comparisons among contaminants. Graphical presentations of health effects-occurrence indexes were developed for more than 300 chemical contaminants, including those on the draft CCL3. a risk indexes framework was then used to elucidate the extent of available data, the data quality, and the underlying uncertainties for occurrence and toxicity. Choosing the appropriate contaminant for regulation is a complex …

Predicting The Perforation Response Of Honeycomb Sandwich Panels Using Ballistic Limit Equations, William P. Schonberg, Frank Schäfer, Robin Putzar
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Man-made debris from previous spacecraft missions poses a serious threat to spacecraft that are launched to operate in Earth orbit because it can strike such spacecraft at extremely high velocities and consequently damage mission-critical systems. Most satellites are constructed with honeycomb sandwich panels as their primary structural elements. to be able to perform a risk analysis, it is important to know, in the event of such a meteoroid or orbital debris particle impact, whether or not the impacting particle or parts thereof will exit the rear of the sandwich panel. a recently developed set of ballistic limit equations for two …
An Integrated Damping And Strengthening Strategy For Performance-Based Seismic Design And Retrofit Of Highway Bridges, Kazi Rezaul Karim
An Integrated Damping And Strengthening Strategy For Performance-Based Seismic Design And Retrofit Of Highway Bridges, Kazi Rezaul Karim
Masters Theses
"In this study, a damping-enhanced strengthening (DES) strategy was introduced to retrofit bridge structures for multiple performance objectives. The main objectives of this study are (1) to numerically demonstrate the effectiveness of the anchoring mechanism of a constrained damping layer in the proposed DES system, and (2) to evaluate the performances of a highway bridge retrofitted with a DES retrofit technique of viscoelastic (VE) damping and carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) strengthening components that are nearly independent under weak earthquakes but strongly coupled under strong earthquakes"--Abstract, page v.
Screw Connections Subject To Tension Pull-Out And Shear Forces, Ryan M. Francka
Screw Connections Subject To Tension Pull-Out And Shear Forces, Ryan M. Francka
Masters Theses
"Currently, the behavior of screw connections subject to combined tension pull-out and shear forces is not well understood. An experimental study was conducted at Missouri University of Science and Technology to better understand the relationship or interaction between these forces. The test program evaluated four parameters that may influence the behavior of pure tension and pure shear in screw connections: the thickness of the sheet not in contact with the screw head, the ultimate strength of the steel, the ductility of the steel, and the screw diameter. This investigation extends the application of the pure pull-out and pure shear equations …

The Hydro-NEXRAD merging algorithms include two options: (1) data-based merging; and (2) product-based merging. Data-based merging algorithm takes volume scan reflectivity data from all radars involved through preprocessing algorithm that performs volume data quality control, interpolates data to synchronize temporal scale between individual radars, and finally combines data onto a common geographic grid. Reflectivity values for a given location are assigned by a weighting function with respect to the distance from the radar. This single reflectivity field is then converted to rainfall amounts using a user-requested standard approach. In product-based merging algorithm reflectivity data from multiple radars are all converted …
Piles Under Earthquake Loads, Shamsher Prakash, Vijay K. Puri
Piles Under Earthquake Loads, Shamsher Prakash, Vijay K. Puri
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Piles are preferred type of foundation for supporting structures in seismic areas. their performance is affected by soil, pile and earthquake related parameters. in non-liquefying soils, the shear modulus may degrade, and material damping may increase with increasing strain/displacement. in liquefying soils, the lateral ground displacement may lead to increased lateral loads and moments on the pile leading to pile failure in bending. the loss of lateral support can also lead to buckling type failure. These issues for pile design in seismic areas are examined. © 2008 ASCE.
