Nutrient Recovery From Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Permeate Using Ion Exchange, Patrick Mullen
Nutrient Recovery From Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Permeate Using Ion Exchange, Patrick Mullen
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Phosphorus is a common element in wastewater streams and traditional treatment processes are often designed remove it to achieve low effluent limits. Such processes often do not often consider the potential value of the nutrient. Currently, production of phosphate fertilizers has dramatically risen causing concern for the depletion of phosphate rock reserves, bringing about exploration into alternative sources of phosphorus for agricultural use. Combining the needs of phosphorus removal from wastewaters and securing alternate sources of the nutrient provide an opportunity for recovery. This project evaluated a nutrient recovery process through ion exchange with beneficial recovery as precipitated struvite using …

This paper presents the development of a pavement design and rehabilitation optimization decision-making framework based on Mechanistic-Empirical (ME) roughness transfer models. The AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design (the software of Pavement ME Design) is used to estimate pavement deterioration based on the combined effects of permanent deformation, fatigue, and thermal cracking. The optimization problem is first formulated into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to address the predominant trade-off between agency and user costs. To deal with the complexity associated with the pavement roughness transfer functions in the software and to use the roughness values as input to the optimization framework, a …

In the absence of coating, the only way to improve the sensitivity of silicon microcantilever-based density sensors is to optimize the device geometry. Based on this idea, several microcantilevers with different shapes (rectangular-, U- and T-shaped microstructures) and dimensions have been fabricated and tested in the presence of hydrogen/nitrogen mixtures (H2/N2) of various concentrations ranging from 0.2% to 2%. In fact, it is demonstrated that wide and short rectangular cantilevers are more sensitive to gas density changes than U- and T-shaped devices of the same overall dimensions, and that the thickness does not affect the sensitivity …

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are gaining traction as they offer mineralization potential rather than transferring contaminants between media. However, AOPs operated with limited energy and/or chemical inputs can exacerbate disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation, even as precursors such as dissolved organic carbon, UV254, and specific UV absorbance (SUVA) decrease. This study examined the relationship between DBP precursors and formation using TiO2 photocatalysis experiments, external AOP and non-AOP data, and predictive DBP models. The top-performing indicator, SUVA, generally correlated positively with trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, but limited-energy photocatalysis yielded contrasting negative correlations. The accuracy of predicted DBP values from …

To overcome the detrimental effects of liquid environments on microelectromechanical systems resonator performance, the in-fluid vibration of a novel disk resonator supported by two electrothermally driven legs is investigated through analytical modeling and the effects of the system’s geometric/material parameters on the dynamic response are explored. The all-shear interaction device (ASID) is based on engaging the surrounding fluid primarily through shearing action. The theory comprises a continuous-system, multimodal model, and a single-degree-of-freedom model, the latter yielding simple formulas for the fundamental-mode resonant characteristics that often furnish excellent estimates to the results based on the more general model. Comparisons between theoretical …

Sustainable Design Of Buildings Using Semantic Bim And Semantic Web Services, Mehrdad Niknam, Saeed Karshenas
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In response to the growing concerns about climate change and the environment, sustainable design of buildings is increasingly demanded by building owners and users. However, fast evaluation of various design options and identification of the optimized design requires application of design analysis tools such as energy modeling, daylight simulations, and natural ventilation analysis software. Energy analysis requires access to distributed sources of information such as building element material properties provided by designers, mechanical equipment information provided by equipment manufacturers, weather data provided by weather reporting agencies, and energy cost data from energy providers. Gathering energy related information from different sources …

This study examined the effect of the amino acid composition of protein capsids on virus inactivation using ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and titanium dioxide photocatalysis, and physical removal via enhanced coagulation using ferric chloride. Although genomic damage is likely more extensive than protein damage for viruses treated using UV, proteins are still substantially degraded. All amino acids demonstrated significant correlations with UV susceptibility. The hydroxyl radicals produced during photocatalysis are considered nonspecific, but they likely cause greater overall damage to virus capsid proteins relative to the genome. Oxidizing chemicals, including hydroxyl radicals, preferentially degrade amino acids over nucleotides, and the amino …
The Role Of Shrinkage Strains Causing Early-Age Cracking In Cast-In-Place Concrete Bridge Decks, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan, Christopher M. Foley
The Role Of Shrinkage Strains Causing Early-Age Cracking In Cast-In-Place Concrete Bridge Decks, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan, Christopher M. Foley
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Early-age cracking in cast-in-place reinforced concrete bridge decks is occurring more frequently now than three decades ago and principle factors that lead to early-age deck cracking are not fully understood. A finite element (FE) simulation methodology for assessing the role of shrinkage-induced strains in generating early-age bridge deck cracking is described. The simulations conducted indicate that drying shrinkage appears to be capable of causing transverse (and possibly longitudinal) bridge deck cracks as early as 9 to II days after bridge deck placement. The drying-shrinkage induced stresses would result in transverse cracking over interior pier supports in a typical bridge superstructure …

We present the piezoresistive transduction of an all-organic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based resonant sensor fabricated through a low-cost and highly versatile process. The MEMS resonator consists of a U-shaped cantilever beam resonator made of a thin layer of a piezoresistive nanocomposite (SU/8 epoxy resin filled with industrially produced carbon nanotubes, or CNTs) deposited on flexible substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and paper. The structures have been fabricated using a commercially available vinyl cutting machine. External piezoelectric actuation has been used to drive the devices into resonance while integrated piezoresistive transduction has been chosen as the resonance …

In wet lay-up process, dry fiber sheets are saturated with a polymer and applied to the concrete surface by hand. This causes relatively large variation in properties of the cured FRP composite material. It is hard to know the exact mechanical properties of the FRP constructed by wet lay-up process. In addition, the stiffness of FRP changes during debonding process due to different amount of concrete attached to the debonded FRP at different locations. It is also inevitable to have considerable variations in the strength of concrete. Therefore, the behaviour of FRP bonded concrete members varies among specimens even when …

The Impact Of Triclosan On The Spread Of Antibiotic Resistance In The Environment, Daniel E. Carey, Patrick J. Mcnamara
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Triclosan (TCS) is a commonly used antimicrobial agent that enters wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the environment. An estimated 1.1 × 105 to 4.2 × 105 kg of TCS are discharged from these WWTPs per year in the United States. The abundance of TCS along with its antimicrobial properties have given rise to concern regarding its impact on antibiotic resistance in the environment. The objective of this review is to assess the state of knowledge regarding the impact of TCS on multidrug resistance in environmental settings, including engineered environments such as anaerobic digesters. Pure culture studies are reviewed …
Earthmoving Productivity In Urban Bridge Construction, Seonghoon Kim, Yong Bai
Earthmoving Productivity In Urban Bridge Construction, Seonghoon Kim, Yong Bai
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Earthmoving operations in urban bridge reconstruction projects are analyzed to identify significant factors that impact relatively low productivity. The research project was conducted in the urban interchange reconstruction of Interstate Highway 235 (I-235) in Des Moines, Iowa. By using observational studies and a statistical analysis method, the factors were identified, including match factor, number of passes, and loading cycle time per bucket. Number of truck, match factor, travel time, and hauling distance were identified as the unique factors for the off-site earthmoving project, while the start time and travel time were significant factors for the on-site project. This research also …

This study evaluated strategies targeting disinfection byproduct (DBP) mitigation using TiO2 photocatalysis with varying influent water quality. A Purifics Photo-CAT Lab reactor was used to assess total trihalomethane (TTHM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) formation as a function of photocatalytic treatment using water from a conventional coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation process, granular activated carbon filtration, and a DBP hot spot in the water distribution system. Regardless of influent water quality, photocatalysis reduced DBP precursors; however, low-energy limited photocatalysis (m−3), exacerbated the production of TTHMs and HAA5s beyond initial levels. Accordingly, limited photocatalysis is not a suitable option when TTHMs and HAA5s …
Fate Of Micropollutants During Pyrolysis Of Biosolids, John Ross
Fate Of Micropollutants During Pyrolysis Of Biosolids, John Ross
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Approximately 250 tons of organic micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, antimicrobials, and hormones, are discharged to the environment during land application of wastewater biosolids annually. Reusing wastewater biosolids is vital to the sustainability of wastewater treatment, but current treatment processes do not remove micropollutants from biosolids in an efficient manner. Pyrolysis―the heating of biomass to temperatures between 400 and 800 °C under oxygen-free conditions―was proposed as a biosolids treatment process that could produce a beneficial soil amendment product, biochar, and remove micropollutants. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of pyrolysis temperature and residence time on the removal of …
Failure Mechanisms And Key Parameters Of Frp Debonding From Cracked Concrete Beams, Tayyebeh Mohammadi
Failure Mechanisms And Key Parameters Of Frp Debonding From Cracked Concrete Beams, Tayyebeh Mohammadi
Dissertations (1934 -)
Intermediate crack (IC) induced debonding failure of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)-strengthened reinforced concrete beams starts at the tip of flexural/shear cracks within the shear span and propagates towards the FRP plate termination. In this study, experimental and numerical programs are performed to characterize and predict the failure mechanisms of IC debonding failure, and identify the key parameters affecting such failure. It is found that the bond-slip relation obtained from the pullout test does not represent the bond-slip relation of the FRP/concrete interface in the FRP-strengthened concrete beams, and it cannot be directly used for predicting the load capacity of the …

Seismological modeling technologies are advancing to the stage of enabling fundamental simulation of earthquake fault ruptures, which offer new opportunities to simulate extreme ground motions for collapse safety assessment and earthquake scenarios for community resilience studies. With the goal toward establishing the reliability of simulated ground motions for performance-based engineering, this paper examines the response of a 20-story concrete moment frame building analyzed by nonlinear dynamic analysis under corresponding sets of recorded and simulated ground motions. The simulated ground motions were obtained through a larger validation study via the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) Broadband Platform (BBP) that simulates magnitude …

Triclosan is a widespread antimicrobial agent that accumulates in anaerobic digesters used to treat the residual solids generated at municipal wastewater treatment plants; there is very little information, however, about how triclosan impacts microbial communities in anaerobic digesters. We investigated how triclosan impacts the community structure, function and antimicrobial resistance genes in lab-scale anaerobic digesters. Previously exposed (to triclosan) communities were amended with 5, 50, and 500 mg/kg of triclosan, corresponding to the median, 95th percentile, and 4-fold higher than maximum triclosan concentration that has been detected in U.S. biosolids. Triclosan amendment caused all of the Bacteria and Archaea communities …

An Ecohydrological Perspective On Drought-Induced Forest Mortality, Anthony J. Parolari, Gabriel Katul, Amilcare Porporato
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Regional‐scale drought‐induced forest mortality events are projected to become more frequent under future climates due to changes in rainfall patterns. The occurrence of these mortality events is driven by exogenous factors such as frequency and severity of drought and endogenous factors such as tree water and carbon use strategies. To explore the link between these exogenous and endogenous factors underlying forest mortality, a stochastic ecohydrological framework that accounts for random arrival and length of droughts as well as responses of tree water and carbon balance to soil water deficit is proposed. The main dynamics of this system are characterized with …

Biologically produced methane (CH4) from anaerobic digesters is a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, but digester failure can be a serious problem. Monitoring the microbial community within the digester could provide valuable information about process stability because this technology is dependent upon the metabolic processes of microorganisms. A healthy methanogenic community is critical for digester function and CH4 production. Methanogens can be surveyed and monitored using genes and transcripts of mcrA, which encodes the α subunit of methyl coenzyme M reductase – the enzyme that catalyses the final step in methanogenesis. Using clone libraries and quantitative …

Dynamic-mode cantilever-based structures supporting end masses are frequently used as MEMS/NEMS devices in application areas as diverse as chemical/biosensing, atomic force microscopy, and energy harvesting. This paper presents a new analytical solution for the free vibration of a cantilever with a rigid end mass of finite size. The effects of both translational and rotational inertia as well as horizontal eccentricity of the end mass are incorporated into the model. This model is general regarding the end-mass distribution/geometry and is validated here for the commonly encountered geometries of T- and U-shaped cantilevers. Comparisons with 3D FEA simulations and experiments on silicon …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
To more accurately model microcantilever resonant behavior in liquids and to improve lateral-mode sensor performance, a new model is developed to incorporate viscous fluid effects and Timoshenko beam effects (shear deformation, rotatory inertia). The model is motivated by studies showing that the most promising geometries for lateral-mode sensing are those for which Timoshenko effects are most pronounced. Analytical solutions for beam response due to harmonic tip force and electrothermal loadings are expressed in terms of total and bending displacements, which correspond to laser and piezoresistive readouts, respectively. The influence of shear deformation, rotatory inertia, fluid properties, and actuation/detection schemes on …

Dynamic-mode microcantilever-based devices are potentially well suited to biological and chemical sensing applications. However, when these applications involve liquid-phase detection, fluid-induced dissipative forces can significantly impair device performance. Recent experimental and analytical research has shown that higher in-fluid quality factors (Q) are achieved by exciting microcantilevers in the lateral flexural mode. However, experimental results show that, for microcantilevers having larger width-to-length ratios, the behaviors predicted by current analytical models differ from measurements. To more accurately model microcantilever resonant behavior in viscous fluids and to improve understanding of lateral-mode sensor performance, a new analytical model is developed, incorporating both …

Finite Element Analysis Of Frp Debonding Failure At The Tip Of Flexural/Shear Crack In Concrete Beam, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan, Kent Harries
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
One of the most common failure modes of strengthened RC beams with externally bonded FRP is intermediate crack (IC) debonding of FRP initiated at the tip of flexural/shear cracks. This study presents a method, using extended finite element method (XFEM), to model IC debonding in an FRP-strengthened concrete beam. In XFEM, as soon as a damage initiation criterion is reached in an element, additional degrees of element freedom are added to model crack initiation. Crack propagation is then modeled using fracture energy criterion. This method can be used to simulate debonding failure along an arbitrary, solution-dependent path without the requirement …
