Investigation Of Field And Laboratory Methods For Evaluating Subgrade Support In The Design Of Highway Flexible Pavements, Robert F. Baker, William B. Drake Mar 1949

Investigation Of Field And Laboratory Methods For Evaluating Subgrade Support In The Design Of Highway Flexible Pavements, Robert F. Baker, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Four different methods of evaluating subgrade support under flexible pavements were studied: (1) Field CBR; (2) North Dakota Cone; (3) Bearing Plates; and (4) Laboratory CBR.

Approximately 435 miles of flexible pavements in Kentucky were represented. The roads were selected so as to give a wide range in conditions of traffic, soil areas, and design. A total of 185 locations were investigated, and 338 cone tests, 291 field CBR's, and 117 series of plate tests were conducted. There were 178 subgrade samples for which the laboratory CBR test was conducted. Undisturbed samples for future triaxial tests were obtained at 21 …

An Examination Of Equipment For Preventing Segregation In Storage Of Coarse Aggregates, S. T. Collier Feb 1949

An Examination Of Equipment For Preventing Segregation In Storage Of Coarse Aggregates, S. T. Collier

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This is a report of an investigation of a device developed for the purpose of reducing to a minimum the segregation of coarse aggregates during delivery from chutes or conveyors to bins and other storage or transportation facilities.

Producers and consumers are always confronted, more or less, with segregation of materials, but methods toward its elimination have been moderately successful at best. As a matter of fact, the most successful of those methods have been those that required placement and distribution of loads in bins, stockpiles, barges, and the like, rather than the use of mechanical devices for prevention of …

Geologic Considerations In Relation To A Materials Survey, James L. Young Jr., L. E. Gregg Jan 1949

Geologic Considerations In Relation To A Materials Survey, James L. Young Jr., L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In materials surveying, geology should be of maximum benefit, not as a complete informant but as a foundation for reconnaissance, assembly, and cataloging of materials. Geology in essence is a materials survey on a grand scale. Use of this science for engineering purposes involves some primary knowledge of geologic nomenclature, the basic historic approach of geologists, and the use of resources and data published by state, federal, and private agencies over a period of 75 years.

Recognition of the need for information on surface conditions as an aid to engineering and allied sciences is emphasized; and in response to this …

Recommended Special Specification For Surfacing Materials For Signs And Markers, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This special specification supersedes all previous specifications establishing requirements for surfacing materials for vertical signs and markers as defined below. This includes all previous special and temnorary specifications and part 7.23.SB of the Department's 1945 Standard Specifications for State and Federal Road and Bridge Construction.

A Laboratory Investigation Of Mineralogical, Chemical And Physical Properties Of Limestone Aggregates, James L. Young Jr., James H. Havens, L. E. Gregg Dec 1948

A Laboratory Investigation Of Mineralogical, Chemical And Physical Properties Of Limestone Aggregates, James L. Young Jr., James H. Havens, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The project described in this report represents one phase of comprehensive research with all types of aggregates for highway paving mixtures in Kentucky. It was designed to show the fundamental properties of limestones which determine their suitability for this type of use -- particularly their so-called durability. For this reason, emphasis was placed on analysis of the intrinsic properties of the aggregates themselves rather than analysis of procedures or test methods, such as freezing and thawing.

Separation, Fractionation And Mineralogy Of Clays In Soils, James H. Havens, James L. Young Jr., Robert F. Baker Dec 1948

Separation, Fractionation And Mineralogy Of Clays In Soils, James H. Havens, James L. Young Jr., Robert F. Baker

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This paper describes a working method for separation, fractionation and identification of colloid and colloidal clay minerals in soils. Technical information pertains to super-centrifugation, electron-microscopy and X-ray diffraction. On the basis of these techniques, twenty-two samples have been investigated in conjunction with a soil stud of pumping pavements.

Soils were first dispersed and separated by gravity sedimentation. Fractionation was accomplished by controlled super-centrifugation. The separated fractions were purified and then analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Computed size fractions were checked by shadow castings and lineal dimensions on electron micrographs.

Results include identification of the mineral or minerals present and the properties …

Cold-Applied Mastic-Type Crack And Joint Filler Compound, L. E. Gregg May 1948

Cold-Applied Mastic-Type Crack And Joint Filler Compound, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For the past year the Research Laboratory has been investigating joint filling compounds for concrete pavements with the object of determining whether extenders of one type or another placed in the hot-poured rubber-asphalt filler could reduce the cost without reducing the efficiency of these materials. Also included in the investigation was a search for new or different materials that might serve the same purpose but have properties that would make them more desirable or less expensive than the rubber-asphalt fillers. Because of the inconvenience and danger involved in the heating process to 450°F, and also the difficulty of controlling the …

Reflectorizing Surfaces For Signs And Markers, L. E. Gregg Jan 1948

Reflectorizing Surfaces For Signs And Markers, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The attached copy of a proposed special specification for reflectorizing surfaces for signs and markers is submitted with the recommendation that this be considered by the specification committee, and furthermore that it be considered tentative. The specification was drawn up at the request of the Division of Maintenance in order that they would have some basis for differentiating materials offered by different vendors when invitations for bids are taken. I am sure that Mr. Palmer and Mr. Ringo consider the matter urgent.

A Study Of The Relationship Between Sub-Grade California Bearing Ratios And Pumping Of Rigid Pavements, Robert F. Baker Dec 1947

A Study Of The Relationship Between Sub-Grade California Bearing Ratios And Pumping Of Rigid Pavements, Robert F. Baker

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between the pumping of rigid pavements and the modified California Bearing Ratio of the subgrade soil, beneath the pavement. The ultimate objective is a design criteria for eliminating or minimizing in the most economical way, pumping of rigid pavements in Kentucky.

A Study Of The Properties Of Coarse Aggregates, James L. Young Jr., James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Research Project C-22 is an investigation of the geologic aspects of limestone aggregate that might cause failure if used in highway construction, as reported earlier. As the study was to be approached from a new standpoint, it was allowed to mature along significant lines. At present a working plan has been adopted and is shown here in some detail.

Experiments With Air Entrainment In Cement Concrete, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory Oct 1947

Experiments With Air Entrainment In Cement Concrete, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In September, 1946, the Research Laboratory prepared and distributed a comprehensive report entitled. "A Summary of Experiments With Air Entrainment in Cement Concrete", which covered field and laboratory experimentation conducted over a period of six years. In February, 1947, specific recommendations based on this report and another dealing with the pressure method of determining air contents resulted in adoption of air entrainment for all concrete pavements and the pressure method as the only accepted method of control.

Among the several projects included in the six years of research were four experimental roads which, of course, are still in service. Although …
