Buckling Of Diaphragm-Braced Columns Of Unsymmetrical Sections And Application To Wall Studs Design, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Lateral bracing has a significant effect on increasing the buckling load of compression members. In the case of wall stud construction, such bracing is provided by wallboards directly attached to the stud along its length and results in increasing the load carrying capacity significantly. The objective of this investigation is to study the behavior of singly symmetric sections braced by shear diaphragms and to apply the theoretical findings verified by experimental results to the design of wall studs. In the present investigation the shear rigidity as well as the rotational restraint of the diaphragm are considered. Using an energy approach, …

Response Of Orthotropic Bridge Decks To Highway Loadings, Harry Morris Rexin Jul 1973

Response Of Orthotropic Bridge Decks To Highway Loadings, Harry Morris Rexin

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis documents the fabrication, testing techniques, and response of a plastic scale model of an orthotropic bridge deck. To economically investigate a two-lane steel bridge deck, plastic AcrylicR was used as a modeling material. Welds were simulated with dichloromethane, a capillary action solvent, and PS-30, a polymerizable cement. Deflections were measured with laboratory dial guages while strains were monitored with strain guages mounted on the deck.

The response of the deck to AASHO vehicle axle loads was compared with a discrete element computer program used to analyze orthotropic bridge decks continuous over flexible supports. Results indicate good correlation …

Tests On Field Welded Puddle And Fillet Weld Connections, R. S. Yarnell, Teoman Peköz Jan 1973

Tests On Field Welded Puddle And Fillet Weld Connections, R. S. Yarnell, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION This report contains the results of tests on 122 field welded connections. Most of the specimens are approximately the same as those that were shop welded previously and tested. The results of tests on shop welded specimens are given in Ref. 2. Those field welded specimens that do not correspond to the shop welded specimens are indicated in Table lA. Except as noted, all notations, variables, weld configurations and procedures are identical with those in Ref. 2. All specimens were tested in a hydraulic test machine under monotonically increasing slowly applied tensile force. This report differs from Ref. 2 …

Diaphragm Braced Thin-Walled Open Sections And Design Of Wall Studs, Amir Simaan, Teoman Peköz Jan 1973

Diaphragm Braced Thin-Walled Open Sections And Design Of Wall Studs, Amir Simaan, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel wall studs generally are I, Z or channel shaped with or without stiffening lips, and with webs perpendicular to the plane of the wall. Because of their configuration and dimensions, these sections are quite unstable by themselves. However, the stability and, hence, load-carrying capacity of such studs are increased substantially once they are connected to the wallboard material. The main function of the wallboard is that of enclosure, but it serves also as a bracing system for the studs. Gypsum board, vegetable fiberboard, tempered board or plywood are commonly used wallboard materials. Such boards are connected to …

Column Research Council: Proceedings 1973, Column Research Council

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where problems related to the design and behavior of columns and other compression elements in metal structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides opportunity to carry out this function. The 1973 Annual Technical Session was held on May 2 and 3 at the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Sixty persons attended the Session and thirty-three papers were delivered. A panel discussion on "Frame Stability Under Seismic Loading" was held in the evening of May 2, 1973. Panelists were E. …

Diaphragm Braced Channel And Z-Section Beams, George Winter, Nuri Celebi, Teoman Peköz May 1972

Diaphragm Braced Channel And Z-Section Beams, George Winter, Nuri Celebi, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE Cold-·formed channels and Z-shapes are widely used as purlins supporting roof surfaces which consist of light-gage steel panels or other material. If the panels are interconnected to form diaphragms, they brace the purlins and increase their carrying capcity sizeably. It is the purpose of this investigation to explore this bracing effect and provide tools for its utilization in~design. The author wishes to express his gratitude to Professors George Winter and Teoman Pekoz, Project Directors. Their suggestions, criticism and guidance made this work possible. The research project covered by this report was sponsored at Cornell University by the American Iron …

Cold-Formed Steel Structural Elements Subjected To Time-Dependent Loading, Charles G. Culver Jan 1972

Cold-Formed Steel Structural Elements Subjected To Time-Dependent Loading, Charles G. Culver

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This report summarizes the results obtained from a comprehensive study of the behavior of thin-walled, cold-formed members subjected to impact or shock loading. The influence of local buckling and the concept of effective width in the elastic post-buckling range on the dynamic response of these members is described. Analytical and experimental results for thin compression elements, beams and columns are discussed. Comparisons between the analytical and experimental results are presented. Application of the results obtained from this research to practical situations involving impact or shock loading of cold-formed members is also discussed.
