Progress In The Development Of Asce 41 For Cold-Formed Steel, Deniz Ayhan, Robert L. Madsen, Benjamin W. Schafer
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The objective of this paper is to document progress on new cold-formed steel provisions for the forthcoming edition of ASCE 41, Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings. The current edition of ASCE 41 (2013) is weak with respect to the application of cold-formed steel and provides only limited information on cold-formed steel framed buildings, shear walls, members, and connections. The emphasis in this paper is on cold-formed steel framed shear walls, and the development of modeling parameters that characterize the backbone shear-deformation response, and acceptance criteria that provide allowable demand-to-capacity ratios (m-factors) for the shear walls based on a …

Advancing Bim For Cold-Formed Steel Structures, Adam Johnson, Roni Ramirez, Cheng Yu
Advancing Bim For Cold-Formed Steel Structures, Adam Johnson, Roni Ramirez, Cheng Yu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper presents a research project aimed at advancing BIM for cold-formed steel (CFS) structures. The creation of the CFS family for Autodesk Revit is a handy solution for the lack of CFS members and information inside the Autodesk Revit libraries. Revit is one of the industry’s standard software for producing building information models. To overcome the disadvantages of not having CFS members in Revit, this research project focused on two phases to reach completion. Phase one consisted of developing a BIM library of industrial standard CFS members such as studs, tracks, and channels. Parameters were added to the members …

The Design And Development Of New Cold Roll Formed Products By Finite Element Modeling And Optimisation, V. B. Nguyen, P. K. C. Wood, M. A. English, M. A. Castellucci
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The design and development of new cold roll formed products can incur significant cost and the product may not be optimised for either performance or manufacture. This paper describes a new method to develop an optimum structural design of profile by cold roll forming using a combined approach of finite element analysis and optimisation techniques. To illustrate the concept, the design and development of a new channel beam and a new drain grating subjected to bending are presented. The two case studies, demonstrate how a roll formed profile may be optimised to improved structural performance through use of stiffeners and/or …
Buckling Strength Of Cold-Formed Circular Steel Column Subjected To Axial Load, Ayana Ito, Nobutaka Shimizu, Keiichi Sato, Yoshimichi Kawai
Buckling Strength Of Cold-Formed Circular Steel Column Subjected To Axial Load, Ayana Ito, Nobutaka Shimizu, Keiichi Sato, Yoshimichi Kawai
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
In this study, the global buckling behavior of a cold-formed circular steel column was discussed with a focus on the effects of its mechanical properties and initial imperfections on the behavior. As the first step, the stress–strain curves of the column under tensile and compressive loads as well as its residual stresses were investigated. Subsequently, a finite element analysis was conducted to clarify if the analysis properly simulated the stub column behavior. The analysis results obtained using measured compressive stress–strain curves and residual stresses agreed well with experimental results. Finally, another finite element analysis was performed on the long column …

Proposal For Codification Of A Dsm Design Approach For Cold-Formed Steel Short-To Intermediate Angle Columns, Pedro Borges Dinis, Dinar Camotim
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper presents a proposal for the codification of an efficient design approach for cold-formed steel short-to-intermediate equal-leg angle columns, consisting of a slight modification of a design approach developed by Dinis & Camotim (2015) and based on the Direct Strength Method (DSM). After (i) collecting the available experimental and numerical failure load data, comprising fixed-ended and pin-ended columns with several geometries (cross-section dimensions and length) and reported by various researchers, and (ii) briefly reviewing the mechanical reasoning behind the proposed procedures, the search for new/simpler expressions to provide the DSM design curves is addressed. Their merits are assessed through …
Effect Of Web Perforation On The Behaviour Of Cold-Formed Steel C-Shape Slender Column Subjected To Non-Uniform Cross-Sectional Distribution Of Elevated Temperatures, S. Yang, L. Xu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Presented in this paper is a numerical investigation on the effect of web perforations on the behaviour of cold-formed steel C-shape columns subjected to non-uniform cross-sectional distribution of elevated temperature with use of finite element analysis. The length of web perforation investigated varies from 0 mm to 630 mm (25 in.). The non-uniform cross-sectional distributions of elevated temperatures are obtained from finite element thermal analysis of insulated CFS walls subjected to standard fire up to 105 minutes. Sequentially coupled thermal-stress analyses were carried out under a transient state condition. The concentrically loaded cold-formed steel C-shape columns with load ratios of …

Distortional Buckling Experiment On Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Columns With Circle Holes Under Axial Compression, Xingyou Yao, Yanli Guo, Zhen Nie
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The objective of this paper is to research the distortional buckling mode and load-carrying capacity of cold-formed thin-walled steel columns with circle holes in web. Compression tests were conducted on 26 intermediate length columns with and without holes. The test members included four different kinds of circle holes. Test results show that the distortional buckling occurred for intermediate columns with holes and the strength of columns with holes was less than that of columns without circle hole. The ultimate strength of columns decreased with the increase of the total transverse width of hole in cross-section of members. For each specimen, …

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
This paper summarizes recent investigations on the development of Direct Strength Method (DSM) for the design of cold-formed steel beams under two-flange (TF) loading against web crippling failure. Recently, the authors proposed a new approach to predict the web crippling failure load of cold-formed steel beams under External Two Flange (ETF) and Internal Two Flange (ITF) loadings using DSM. Firstly, existing experimental test data are summarized and then the accuracy of North-American Specification (AISI 2012) and Eurocode 3 (CEN 2006) provisions is briefly assessed. In order to obtain additional information on the web crippling behavior of each test specimen, non-linear …

Experimental Investigation Of Cold-Formed C-Sections With Central Square Holes In Shear, Cao Hung Pham, Andreas Pelosi, Thomas Earls, Gregory J. Hancock
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The North American Specification S100:2012 Edition has recently included DSM design rules for unperforated channel sections in shear. However, there are no rules presented in this standard for the DSM in shear for sections with holes. Recently, a testing program has been performed at the University of Sydney to determine the ultimate strength of high strength cold-formed C-sections with a thickness of 1.5 mm and central square holes of varying sizes. Three different sizes of the square holes were chosen for testing. For thin sections, the DSM shear curve was found to be applicable for design of sections with square …
Chloride Contamination Remediation On Steel Bridges, Bobby W. Meade, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle, Theodore Hopwood Ii
Chloride Contamination Remediation On Steel Bridges, Bobby W. Meade, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle, Theodore Hopwood Ii
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Researchers evaluated 32 steel surface preparation methods to determine how effectively they remove chloride from corroded chloride-contaminated steel panels. Wet methods proved more effective than dry methods. The three most effective wet methods injected mineral slag abrasives in a water stream and resulted in less than 1% chlorides remaining. Most dry surface preparation methods left significantly more chloride contamination after surface preparation. The three most effective dry methods used multiple blast cleaning cycles. These methods approached the effectiveness of the best wet methods, with 1.6 to 2.0% chlorides remaining. The least effective surface preparation was a single abrasive blast cleaning …

Collapse Resistance Of Moment Resisting Frame And Shear Wall Rc Structural Systems Exposed To Blast, Alaa I. Chehab, Christopher D. Eamon, Joshua Griffin
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
Various characteristics of a structure influence its response when subjected to a blast load. This has important implications for survivability and resistance to progressive collapse. In this study, the effect of the type of lateral load resisting system on reinforced concrete building resistance to progressive collapse when exposed to blast load is examined. Fourteen different reinforced concrete structures were considered for analysis, with five structures designed as moment resisting frames and nine designed as shear walls systems. Buildings with 3, 6, and 10 stories with 3, 4, and 5-bay symmetric configurations were considered. The structures were exposed to external and …

Direct Strength Prediction Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam-Columns, American Iron And Steel Institute
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The Direct Strength Method (DSM) of cold-formed steel member design employs local, distortional, and global cross-section elastic buckling analysis with empirically derived “direct” expressions to predict member strength. DSM is an accepted design method in national design specifications (e.g., AISI-S100-16) and enables a unified, robust, and flexible design approach. However, for beam-columns DSM in current design specifications employs simplified linear interaction expressions based on combining the isolated axial and bending elastic buckling and strength response. Today, local, distortional, and global elastic buckling under any combination of axial load and bending moments may be found using elastic buckling analysis tools such …

Comparison Of Lean Construction In India And United States Of America, Vedangi Mahashabde
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The concept of Lean Construction has been introduced successfully into the Construction Industry to increase efficiency and profit by elimination of non-value adding activities or ‘Waste’. Lean Construction is an adaptation of Lean manufacturing principles and is the future of the Construction Industry in developing as well as developed countries. There has been much study and documentation conducted on ‘Lean Construction’ in USA. Even though people have started practicing Lean in India, there is lack of documented information available about it. Professionals within the Industry could already be minimizing ‘Waste’ and/or following Lean principles without the knowledge of the term …
Restoring Capacity In Compromised Glued Laminated Beams, Cole Moller
Restoring Capacity In Compromised Glued Laminated Beams, Cole Moller
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
After structural fires are extinguished, presuming the structure is not a total loss, structural wood members can be inspected for residual properties. Through this research, we explored alternative methods aimed at keeping structurally compromised wood member’s in service when they would otherwise warrant replacement. For this study, we used 24F-V8 DF/DF glued laminated beams that had been loaded to their max capacity; both non-fire damaged and fire damaged. In situations where physical and mechanical changes occur, and the beam warrants individual replacement, a new restoration procedure could be used to salvage the member. Salvaging the member could mean to keep …
Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms And Applications In Transportation And Structural Engineering, Paul W. Johnson Iii
Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms And Applications In Transportation And Structural Engineering, Paul W. Johnson Iii
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Domain decomposition is a divide-and-conquer strategy. In the first part of this dissertation, a new/simple/efficient domain decomposition partitioning algorithm is proposed to break a large domain into smaller sub-domains, in such a way as to minimize the number of system boundary nodes and to balance the work load for each sub-domain. This new domain decomposition algorithm is based on the network’s shortest path solution. Numerical results indicate that the new Shortest Distance Decomposition Algorithm outperformed the most widely used METIS algorithm in 21 out of 27 tested (transportation) examples. In the second part of this dissertation, another new/simple and highly …
Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beams With High-Strength Steel, Brian C. Rogers, Aishwarya Puranam, Santiago Pujol
Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beams With High-Strength Steel, Brian C. Rogers, Aishwarya Puranam, Santiago Pujol
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Structures are commonly made of reinforced concrete, which is a composite material made of concrete and steel reinforcement. Using high-strength steel, with yield stress larger than 100 ksi, could help reduce the quantity of steel required in structural members, thus reducing costs and improving constructability. The hypothesis being tested is that smaller quantities of high-strength steel reinforcement (HSSR) can be used in place of conventional steel in reinforced concrete beams while maintaining similar strength and deformation at failure. Two reinforced concrete beams with two different types of longitudinal steel reinforcement were constructed. The beams were 18 in. wide, 30 in. …

High Strength Steel In The Reinforced Concrete Structures: Serviceability, Alan Kanybek, Aishwarya Puranam, Santiago Pujol
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The use of high-strength steel (yield stress larger than 100 ksi) in reinforced concrete structures can provide an effective alternative to using conventional steel (yield stress up to 80 ksi). The goal of this study is to investigate if slabs with reduced quantities of high-strength steel reinforcement meet the serviceability criteria. Instantaneous and long-term deflections in slab specimens with conventional steel and reduced amounts of high-strength steel (as compared with conventional steel) were studied. Two sets of two reinforced concrete slabs, each 14 ft. long, 30 in. wide, were built. The depth, quantity, and type of longitudinal reinforcement were varied …

Study On Oil Palm Fresh Fruit Bunch Bruise In Harvesting And Transportation To Quality, Andreas Wahyu Krisdiarto, Lilik Sutiarso
Makara Journal of Technology
There are losses of production due to oil palm field’s material handling. Activities that may raise the losses are harvesting and transportation, which may cause bruise and damage to fruit. This research was aimed to learn the bruise of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) phenomenon in harvesting and transportation. Method used in this research was measuring the bruise area resulted by FFB falling when harvested, loading (throwing up) FFB to truck bin, and transporting using truck. These data, coupled with weight of bruised fruit, were calculated to get FFB bruise index. Each FFB bruise index is related to potential free fatty …

Cardiac disease is one of the major causes of death in the world. Early diagnose of the symptoms depends on abnormality on heart beat pattern, known as Arrhythmia. A novel fuzzy neuro generalized learning vector quantization for automatic Arrhythmia heart beat classification is proposed. The algorithm is an extension from the GLVQ algorithm that employs a fuzzy logic concept as the discriminant function in order to develop a robust algorithm and improve the classification performance. The algorithm is tested against MIT-BIH arrhythmia database to measure the performance. Based on the experiment result, FN-GLVQ is able to increase the accuracy of …

Calcium oxide-based material is available abundantly and naturally. A potential resource of that material comes from marine mollusk shell such as clams, scallops, mussels, oysters, winkles and nerites. The CaO-based material has exhibited a good performance as the desulfurizer or adsorbent in coal combustion in order to reduce SO2 emission. In this study, pulverized green mussel shell, without calcination, was utilized as the desulfurizer in the briquette produced from a mixture of low rank coal and palm kernel shell (PKS), also known as bio-briquette. The ratio of coal to PKS in the briquette was 90:10 (wt/wt). The influence of green …

The Knowledge-Based Analysis On Medium Resolution Images Of Remote Sensing To Extraction Information Land Use Type Scs-Cn, The Case Study On Grompol Watershed, Puguh Dwi Raharjo, Totok Gunawan, Mohammad Pramono Hadi
Makara Journal of Technology
Remote sensing imagery Landsat-8 is one image that has a good temporal resolution; in addition to the availability of data, this image can be obtained free of charge. Land cover type SCS-CN is part of a unit of land that affects runoff. The use of medium resolution imagery in reducing the SCS-CN land use type is considered relatively difficult, and it yields less good accuracy. Limitations on multispectral classification only rely on facts derived from spectral reflection, so that the two data are the same since different characteristic results are not so good. This study aims to determine the accuracy …
