State Space Approach To Flood Stage Estimation, Gregory Allen Jones Jan 1984

State Space Approach To Flood Stage Estimation, Gregory Allen Jones

Dissertations and Theses

A flood routing and stage prediction model is developed using the techniques of State Space and Kalman filtering. The governing equation is the physically based hydrologic method of flood routing with the output being an optimal estimate of stage given known inputs of streamflow. These equations are developed in state space and the Kalman filter is employed to estimate the flow and river stage.

The model is applied to the Toutle and Cowlitz Rivers in the State of Washington, where the stage is affected by a shifting bed elevation. With the deterministic inputs at Mayfield Dam on the Cowlitz and …

A Numerical Solution For Three Dimensional Beam Columns In The Elastic Region, Hamid Reza Afghan Jan 1984

A Numerical Solution For Three Dimensional Beam Columns In The Elastic Region, Hamid Reza Afghan

Dissertations and Theses

The three differential equations describing the behavior of the beam columns in three dimensions are derived and presented in finite difference form. A computer model is developed to solve the simultaneous equations in the elastic regions and predict the member behavior.

The computer program is checked by comparing the results obtained from the program with data from other investigators, and classical analytical techniques.

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected To Partial Edge Loading, Shin-Hua Lin Jan 1984

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected To Partial Edge Loading, Shin-Hua Lin

Masters Theses

"An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to partial edge loading which may cause web crippling or web buckling. In this experimental work emphasis was concentrated on the cold-formed steel structural members having single unreinforced webs with stiffened flanges.

In 1980, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) revised its "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members.” For the design of beam webs, Section 3.5.1 of the AISI Specification provides the design criteria for web crippling. This thesis discusses the experimental work including some specimens with small length-to-depth …

A Study Of The Permeability Of Clays Subjected To Organic And Inorganic Permeants, Janardanan O. Uppot Jan 1984

A Study Of The Permeability Of Clays Subjected To Organic And Inorganic Permeants, Janardanan O. Uppot

Doctoral Dissertations

"Two types of clays, a magnesium montrnorillonite and a kaolinite, were subjected to precise permeability tests in specially designed triaxial permeameters, using organic and inorgani c permeants, to study the changes in permeability due to the reaction between clays and permeants. The organic permeants were an acid (acetic acid), a base (aniline), a neutral polar fluid (methanol), a neutral nonpolar fluid (xylene), as well as EDTA and its sodium salt. The inorganic permeants were aqueous solutions of aluminum, magnesium, sodium, calcium, barium and strontium.

The clay samples were prepared by consolidating from slurry; they were subjected to back-pressure saturation and …

Behavior Of Joints Using Reinforced Polymer Concrete Under Seismic Loading, Ishac H. Kafrouni Oct 1983

Behavior Of Joints Using Reinforced Polymer Concrete Under Seismic Loading, Ishac H. Kafrouni

Theses

This report describes the analysis and testing of two types of exterior beam-column joints conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The testing program consisted of six beam column joints with varying strength cementing agents in the joint region: normal, high strength and polymer concrete. Half of the specimens contained 1.5 percent by volume of hooked end fibers. The study of the behavior of these beam column joints has indicated 2 cases of failures: a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by bending and, a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by high shear. …

Analysis And Stability Of Closed Surge Tanks, John Emory Fowler Jul 1983

Analysis And Stability Of Closed Surge Tanks, John Emory Fowler

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The equations representing the water surface oscillations in a closed surge tank form a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations when the system is considered as lumped. Because of the nonlinear terms present in the equations, a closed-form solution of the equations is not available. Several numerical methods ranging from single step methods to higher-order multi-step methods were used to find numerical solutions to the governing equations. As all the methods required a similar amount of CPU time, the degree of accuracy required would determine which numerical method should be used. The effect of various system parameters on the stability …

Treatment Process Optimization At The Lee Hall Water Treatment Plant Newport News, Virginia, Marcy Granum Garnett Jul 1983

Treatment Process Optimization At The Lee Hall Water Treatment Plant Newport News, Virginia, Marcy Granum Garnett

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Various methods can be used in operating a water treatment plant. It is desirable to produce good quality water as efficiently and economically as possible. This study evaluates each phase of operation at the Newport News (Lee Hall} water treatment plant for overall efficiency.

This study begins by giving a detailed description of the Lee Hall water treatment plant. The description includes sources of water, a description of each treatment process, a plan view of the treatment plant, and a flow diagram of the treatment plant.

Based on the raw water data, flow rates, and the treatment plant characteristics, the …

Behavior Of Channel-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Dureseti Chidambarrao May 1983

Behavior Of Channel-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Dureseti Chidambarrao

Theses

The inelastic behavior of irregular shaped reinforced concrete columns has been a constant concern for a structural engineer, to design a safe and economic structure in modern buildings and bridge piers. The shape of the elements in a reinforced concrete structure may be used to optimize its structural strength, to make better use of the available space, to improve the aesthetic appearance of the structure, or to facilitate construction. Due to the locations of the columns, the shapes of the buildings and the nature of the applied loads, many columns are subject to combined biaxial bending and axial load.
