Analysis Of Per Capita Expenditures Of Suburbanizing Communities In Maine, New England Environmental Finance Center
Analysis Of Per Capita Expenditures Of Suburbanizing Communities In Maine, New England Environmental Finance Center
Economics and Finance
This study analyzes per capita expenditure trends among selected fast-growing Maine towns from 1970-2004. The ten communities studied are termed as “suburbanizing” towns. This term is used to describe towns that over the past 30-40 years have been in the process of transition from rural to suburban – in terms of their population and housing densities, their forms of government, and the services they provide, as well as other characteristics.1 Such towns are of particular interest because they have been absorbing a healthy percentage of the state’s population growth during this time period, often at the expense of Maine’s service …
Nonhydrostatic And Nonlinear Contributions To The Energy Flux Budget In Nonlinear Internal Waves, S. K. Venayagamoorthy, O. B. Fringer
Nonhydrostatic And Nonlinear Contributions To The Energy Flux Budget In Nonlinear Internal Waves, S. K. Venayagamoorthy, O. B. Fringer
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We use high-resolution two-dimensional simulations to model the generation, and evolution of nonlinear internal waves formed as a result of the interaction of a first-mode internal wave field with idealized slopes. The derivation of the energy equation and the energy flux terms are presented. By employing an analysis of the distribution of the energy flux across the shelf break, we quantify the contributions to the energy flux budget from nonhydrostatic as well as nonlinear effects in comparison to the contribution from the baroclinic pressure anomaly term used widely for linear internal waves. Our results show that the contributions to the …

Revised Asce Specification For The Design Of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members, Shin Hua Lin, Wei Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos, Edward Wang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Since the publication of the first edition of the AISI specification for the design of light gage cold-formed stainless steel structural members in 1968 [Specification for the design of light gage cold-formed stainless steel structural members. 1968 ed. American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI); 1968], cold-formed stainless-steel members have been increasingly used in building construction and other structural applications due to their superior corrosion resistance, ease of maintenance, pleasing appearance, and high strength. in 1990, the first ASCE standard, ANSI/ASCE-8-90 [Specification for the design of cold-formed stainless steel structural members (ANSI/ASCE 8-90). American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); 1991], was …
Damage Localization In Ambient Vibration By Constructing Proportional Flexibility Matrix, Zhongdong Duan, Guirong Yan, Jinping Ou, B. F. Spencer
Damage Localization In Ambient Vibration By Constructing Proportional Flexibility Matrix, Zhongdong Duan, Guirong Yan, Jinping Ou, B. F. Spencer
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Damage Localization Approaches based on Changes of Flexibilities Constitute an Important Technique for Damage Detection. However, the Unavailability of Flexibility Matrix with Output-Only Data Makes Flexibility-Based Approaches Not Really Applicable in the Very Important Cases of Ambient Vibrations. an Algorithm is Presented to Construct a Proportional Flexibility Matrix (PFM) from a Set of Arbitrarily Scaled Tested Modal Shapes and Modal Frequencies. the Constructed PFM is Just within a Scalar Multiplier to the Real Flexibility Matrix, and the Scalar Multiplier is Theoretically the First Modal Mass, Which is Undetermined Before the Mode is Properly Scaled. Instead of Real Flexibilities, the PFMs …
Lessons Learned From Failures Of The Building Envelope In Windstorms, Joseph E. Minor
Lessons Learned From Failures Of The Building Envelope In Windstorms, Joseph E. Minor
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Lessons learned from failures of the building envelope in windstorms are encapsulated in three principal findings. the building envelope is crucial to the performance of buildings in windstorms. Windborne debris is decisive in shaping the performance of the building envelope. Design attention should be given to postimpact behavior of building-envelope systems. Reviews of damage documentation, insurance records, and computer simulations of building failures establish the importance of the building envelope to satisfactory building performance. These reviews also establish the decisive role of windborne debris in causing damage. the imperative for considering the postimpact behavior of building envelope systems is discussed, …

Individual Certification As An Engineering Manager?, Rafael Landaeta, Kawintorn Pothanun, William Peterson
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Several of the discipline specific professional societies are offering or planning to offer certification of individuals as engineering managers. Does this have implications for Engineering Management programs at universities? Other stakeholders (faculty, students, employers, and graduates of engineering management programs) are impacted by certification as well. This paper attempts to look at the issue from several points of view. This paper is intended to provoke a dialog on the topic.
Field Evaluation Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened With Frp Composites Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Loading, Gustavo Tumialan, Davide Tinazzi, John J. Myers, Antonio Nanni
Field Evaluation Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened With Frp Composites Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Loading, Gustavo Tumialan, Davide Tinazzi, John J. Myers, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls at a decommissioned building in St. Louis, Missouri were tested to failure. the walls belonging to the present experimental program were subjected to out-of-plane loading. Previous work on URM and reinforced masonry walls strengthened with FRP laminates has shown remarkable increases in capacity and ductility. However, most of this research has been conducted under laboratory conditions, where, many times, it is a difficult task to represent real field conditions. in this context, this experimental program offered a singular opportunity for performing field experimentation on URM walls strengthened with Glass, Aramid and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP, …
Strengthening Of Masonry Structures With Frp Composites, J. Gustavo Tumialan, Francesco Micelli, Antonio Nanni
Strengthening Of Masonry Structures With Frp Composites, J. Gustavo Tumialan, Francesco Micelli, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are prone to failure when subjected to out-of-plane and in-plane loads. the development of effective and affordable strengthening strategies is a need. in this context fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials offer viable solutions to solve or lessen the effects of overloading. This paper describes FRP systems proposed for use in the strengthening of masonry elements as well as the impact of such systems on the building being retrofitted. Also, field applications, some potential and others already implemented applications, are described. Field applications include strengthening for natural hazards (i.e. earthquakes and high wind pressures) as well as …

An Assessment Of In-Situ Frp Shear And Flexural Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Joists, Annaiah Raghu, John J. Myers, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study examines the in-situ shear performance and modes of failure of reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams (joists) strengthened with externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. the experimental program consisted of testing a series of nine structural components at the Malcom Bliss Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri. the members were tested to validate the different systems and techniques of strengthening. in particular, this paper covers cases of U-Wraps with and without end-anchors. the experimental results clearly indicate the contribution of externally bonded CFRP sheets in increasing the shear capacity of the system. the experimental and theoretical shear strength of …
Overview Of The Japanese Guidelines For Seismic Retrofitting Of Rc Columns Using Frp Materials, Gustavo Tumialan, Hiroshi Fukuyama, Antonio Nanni
Overview Of The Japanese Guidelines For Seismic Retrofitting Of Rc Columns Using Frp Materials, Gustavo Tumialan, Hiroshi Fukuyama, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The increasing uses of FRP materials for the strengthening and upgrade of buildings has motivated the international engineering community to produce guidelines for the proper design, handling and installation of the externally bonded FRP systems. Thus, independent efforts coordinated by different organizations such as the Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association (JBDPA) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) have led to implementing appropriate provisions. the JBDPA guidelines mainly focus on seismic retrofitting of structural elements, which implies the strengthening for shear of deficient structural elements. This paper describes and comments on some of the design approaches provided by the JBDPA guidelines …
