Improving Static Cold Storage Life Of The Human Heart Before Transplant, Juan Sebastian Rodriguez Paez May 2024

Improving Static Cold Storage Life Of The Human Heart Before Transplant, Juan Sebastian Rodriguez Paez

Theses and Dissertations

Organ storage and transportation are critical steps for the success of organ transplantation. Static cold storage (SCS) of hearts for heart transplantation (HTx) remains the standard approach. However, SCS may involve damage to the tissue resulting from extended hypothermic preservation, potentially affecting organ viability. More over, the temperature distribution on and within the heart is unknown during heart transplantation. Therefore, there is an interest to study different stages of the heart transplantation process towards determining the 3D temperature distribution on and within the heart. There could be a possibility of having a hypothermic injury in different parts of the heart …

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Runaway In Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition Kinetics And Inter-Cell Contact Resistance, Shehzad Khan Jan 2024

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Runaway In Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition Kinetics And Inter-Cell Contact Resistance, Shehzad Khan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are central in numerous high-demand applications due to their high energy density and prolonged cycle life. Despite these advantages, their susceptibility to thermal runaway (TR) poses a significant safety risk, with the potential for catastrophic failures. This study focuses on the thermal behavior of prismatic lithium-ion cells, using a finite volume-based partial differential equation (PDE) solver developed in MATLAB and JULIA to model TR behavior. This solver accurately simulates transient behaviors, convection, diffusion, and source terms across various coordinate systems. By engaging in a series of increasing complex case studies, this research aims to identify the critical …

Free Convection Heat Transfer From Plates, Alexa Moreno May 2022

Free Convection Heat Transfer From Plates, Alexa Moreno

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this honors thesis is to create an experiment for the CHEG Lab I course. This report explains the motivation for creating this heat convection experiment, the results of performing the experiment, and provides recommendations for future work on this experiment. Multiple experiments were performed to assess materials and parameters to be investigated. It was determined that a 0.5” plate has smaller percent error and accommodates for the desired timeframe for a Lab I experiment compared to the first plate used (1.5” thickness). Recommendations for expanding on this project include adding experiments using vertical geometry for heat convection …

Experimental Heat Transfer Investigations Of A Double Pipe U-Tube Heat Exchanger Equipped With Twisted Tape And Cut Twisted Tape Internals, Raj Kumar Nayak Maloth, Glen Cletus Dsouza, Swarna Mayee Patra Nov 2021

Experimental Heat Transfer Investigations Of A Double Pipe U-Tube Heat Exchanger Equipped With Twisted Tape And Cut Twisted Tape Internals, Raj Kumar Nayak Maloth, Glen Cletus Dsouza, Swarna Mayee Patra

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Publications

For several decades, the use of heat exchangers for both heating and cooling applications has been established in industries ranging from process to space heating. Out of the various types of heat exchangers, U-tube heat exchangers are preferred owing to their abilities to handle larger flowrates and their simplicity in construction. U-tube exchangers are often equipped with innards of various forms which facilitate higher heat transfer rates and thermal efficiencies. Although higher heat transfer rates have been established with the addition of internals, there is a lack of coherence on the underlying complex physical phenomena such as heat transfer boundary …

Study Of Heat Transfer And Friction Loss Of Nanofluid Suspension Flow In Circular Pipe Heat Exchanger, Ramadas Sandru Aug 2020

Study Of Heat Transfer And Friction Loss Of Nanofluid Suspension Flow In Circular Pipe Heat Exchanger, Ramadas Sandru

Student Works (2020-2029)

This stated experiment focused on the study of convective heat transfer and friction loss in a circular flow passage for Graphene oxide-based nanofluids which are consist of Graphene Oxide/Distilled water with their different wt. % concentrations. These GO/DW based nanofluids where been prepared by using a facile two-step method, while the GO particles were synthesized by a modified hummer method. Four different (0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1 wt. %) were produced by dispersing graphene particles in distilled water under high probe sonication. The GO/DW based nanofluids flowing in a horizontal shell and tube heat exchanger counter flow under turbulent flow …
