Electrochemical And Mechanical Evaluation Of Cellulose Acetate Electrolyte Films As A Function Of Polyetherimide And Polyethylene Glycol Additives For Supercapacitor Applications, Chase E. Golden
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Polymer electrolytes for supercapacitor applications require a balance between mechanical robustness and electrochemical performance. In this study, cellulose acetate (CA) films were modified with additives such as polyetherimide (PEI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to test how compositional changes influence mechanical performance, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical charge storage. Films were cast using phase inversion, soaked in a 1 M NaCl aqueous solution, and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and tensile testing. Films were also evaluated based on fluid uptake for insight into electrolyte retention.
Characterizations show that the addition of PEI increased ionic …
Modeling Cell Buildup And Release In An Ultrafiltration Cartridge, Holiday B. Derosier
Modeling Cell Buildup And Release In An Ultrafiltration Cartridge, Holiday B. Derosier
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
While membrane filtration has improved greatly and has been incorporated into many modern practices, there isn’t much data on material exchange in and out of the lumen and how that effects the overall efficiency of the process. This data may help to accurately measure the reliability and efficiency of a filtration membrane system, which can lead to improvements in filtration sustainability, process lifespan, and product quality.
This project aims to model the material balance within a perfusion bioreactor ultrafiltration system in MATLAB, with a focus on bioreactors and cell buildup and release from the lumen. The results of this study …
Measuring Plume Concentration Variations Under Neutral Atmospheric Conditions, Daniel Williams
Measuring Plume Concentration Variations Under Neutral Atmospheric Conditions, Daniel Williams
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hazardous gases are increasingly becoming a large safety concern as the world continues to grow and industrialize. The modeling of when hazardous gases breach containment is an extremely important objective of consequence assessment planning and response. To improve the understanding of the variability inherent in passive gas releases, a test program to demonstrate the variability of gas concentration measurements at different location in a passive gas plume released from an area source in the ultra-low speed wind tunnel at the Chemical Hazards Research Center. A Flame Ionization Detector was used to measure the concentration of the source cloud. Methane was …

Heat Transfer From Plates, Leanza Trevino
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this honors thesis is to create an experiment for the CHEG Lab I course. This is a continuation of work done by Alexa Moreno. She created an experiment to model free convection of a horizontal plate. In this report, free and forced convection of a vertical and horizontal plate, respectively are modeled. This report explains the motivation for creating this heat convection experiment, the results of performing the experiment, and provides recommendations for future work on this experiment. Lab handouts are included in the Appendix.
Utilization Of Electrodeionization To Separate And Concentrate Cellobionic And Gluconic Acid, Andie Veeder
Utilization Of Electrodeionization To Separate And Concentrate Cellobionic And Gluconic Acid, Andie Veeder
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Biofuel production is currently an expensive and inefficient process with many drawbacks. It is water and land intensive, competes with food production, and requires large energy inputs decreasing its relative sustainability. This paper explores the use of electrodeionization (EDI) to improve the biofuel process by separating and concentrating large, organic sugar acids that are important materials for the production of bioethanol. An EDI device was assembled for the purpose of separating and concentrating gluconic, cellobionic and lactobionic acid. Several trials were conducted and samples were analyzed to determine the success of this experiment. The results for the separation and concentration …
Characterizing And Quantifying Shear-Induced Hemolysis In A Hollow Fiber Membrane System, Siddhi Bhat
Characterizing And Quantifying Shear-Induced Hemolysis In A Hollow Fiber Membrane System, Siddhi Bhat
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Clinical studies have shown that patients undergoing renal replacement therapy are more susceptible to developing hemolysis, or the rupturing of red blood cells. Rapid hemolysis can cause symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, and even death in severe cases. The aim of this study is to identify how shear stress within a hollow fiber membrane impacts the level of hemolysis that occurs. This allows for the optimization of the ultrafiltration membranes that are typically used for hemofiltration treatments. The variables being studied are the radii of hollow fibers, number of fibers, and volumetric flow rate of blood being circulated. Here, we …
Separation Of Organic Acids Through Direct Catalysis From Sugars, Katelyn Robinson
Separation Of Organic Acids Through Direct Catalysis From Sugars, Katelyn Robinson
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Society relies on plastic products, whether they are single use or durable. A downside of plastic is that the most common type is a product of oil and oil is not only a limited resource but also a climate-damaging resource. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bio-based, biodegradable plastic. However, the process of converting biomass to polylactic acid polymer has the largest environmental impact of the PLA production process, so alternative methods of conversion are needed (Moretti et al., 2021). The polylactic acid polymer can be made with lactic acid, which can be converted from glucose.

Free Convection Heat Transfer From Plates, Alexa Moreno
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this honors thesis is to create an experiment for the CHEG Lab I course. This report explains the motivation for creating this heat convection experiment, the results of performing the experiment, and provides recommendations for future work on this experiment. Multiple experiments were performed to assess materials and parameters to be investigated. It was determined that a 0.5” plate has smaller percent error and accommodates for the desired timeframe for a Lab I experiment compared to the first plate used (1.5” thickness). Recommendations for expanding on this project include adding experiments using vertical geometry for heat convection …
Diffusion Of A Salt In An Aqueous Media, Aldaly Pineda Hernandez
Diffusion Of A Salt In An Aqueous Media, Aldaly Pineda Hernandez
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Diffusion is defined as the net transfer of a molecule from a high concentration region to a low concentration region. The concept of diffusion is used in a very important process called "desalination." Desalination is a separation process used to reduce the salt content dissolved in brackish water to make it suitable for human consumption, irrigation, and industrial use.
In desalination plants, it is important to monitor the constantly changing salt content of water, partly due to the diffusive effect. The main purpose of this experiment was to study the diffusion of NaCl in water at two NaCl concentrations. The …

Removal Of Fluoride From Mine Water Via Adsorption For Land-Applied Soil Amendment, Michelle Dopp, Kevin Le, Ethan Phan, Mary Johnson, Jacqueline Payne, Adrian Damian, Courtney Golman
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Moo Pig Sooie’s researched, designed, and economically analyzed a full-scale adsorption column system to be applied in mining processes that leave high amounts of fluoride in their effluent. This system was designed to remove fluoride from water saturated with calcium sulfate, as calcium sulfate is present in high amounts in certain mining processes. Currently, high density sludge (HDS) is commonly employed to reduce fluoride concentrations, but due to solubility limits the sludge treatment cannot lower fluoride below 10 mg/L (ppm). The current enforceable EPA standard for discharged water is at 4 mg/L (ppm), although mining companies anticipate that this …
Modeling Of Electrochemical Processes At The Magnesium Anode During Struvite Formation, Tobias Dwyer
Modeling Of Electrochemical Processes At The Magnesium Anode During Struvite Formation, Tobias Dwyer
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study analyzes the current transients observed during the electrochemical formation of struvite from a solution of ammonium phosphate using a pure magnesium and magnesium alloy electrode. Through converting the chronoamperometric data to chronocoulometric data and fitting the data to various models, the driving mechanisms for struvite nucleation were elucidated. While the pure magnesium anode is controlled by only instantaneous nucleation at the electrode, the AZ31 alloy is nucleation controlled at short times and Cottrell diffusion controlled at long times.
Effects Of Ambient And Laser Light On Water Evaporation From The Surface Of Polyurethane Swabs Doped With Surfactant, Collin Campbell
Effects Of Ambient And Laser Light On Water Evaporation From The Surface Of Polyurethane Swabs Doped With Surfactant, Collin Campbell
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Polyurethane swabs are a common instrument for environmental sampling in the food, medical, and forensic fields due to their high recovery of organisms like viruses, spores, and bacteria. For sampling microbes in food and medical facilities, storage of the collected samples occurs under the absence of light to promote growth for more accurate testing. In the forensic fields, microbial growth results in sample contamination so the inhibition of this growth requires the drying of the swabs. This work studies the evaporation rates of water from polyurethane swabs under zero watt incident light, 30 W fluorescent bulb, 50 mW 532 nm …
