Effect Of Temperature On Physicochemical Properties Of Plasticized Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose K100–Carbopol 934 Films Containing Propylene Glycol As Plasticizer, Braja Bihari Panda, Rudra Narayan Sahoo, Amit Kumar Nayak
Makara Journal of Science
This paper studies the effect of different temperatures on different important physicochemical characteristics of plasti-cized hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K100-Carbopol 934 films containing propylene glycol (as a plasticizer), such as the rheology, thickness, folding endurance, tensile strength, elongation, and in vitro swelling with diffusion ki-netics. Rheology of HPMC K100-Carbopol 934 blend dispersions containing propylene glycol (before film casting) demonstrates that the flow is shear thinning and pseudoplastic. In the study of in vitro swelling, the relaxation-controlled transport is the predominant process of solvent diffusion into these plasticized HPMC K100–Carbopol 934 blend films under study. The results suggest that the solvent transport …
Designing Bioinspired Materials With Tunable Structures And Properties From Natural And Synthetic Polymers, Anandavalli Varadarajan
Designing Bioinspired Materials With Tunable Structures And Properties From Natural And Synthetic Polymers, Anandavalli Varadarajan
Theses and Dissertations
Biological systems are composed of complex materials which are responsible for performing various functions, such as providing structural support, mobility, functional adaptation to the environment, damage repair, and self-healing. These complex materials display excellent mechanical properties and can rapidly adapt to external stimuli. Thus, nature inspires in terms of source materials, functions, and designs to develop new-generation structural and functional materials. Polymers (natural or synthetic) are excellent sources of developing materials to mimic the functions of soft segments in biological systems. This dissertation focuses on synthesizing and characterizing two different materials with tunable structures and properties: complexes from natural polysaccharides …
Anti-Freeze Double Network Hydrogels, William Gross
Anti-Freeze Double Network Hydrogels, William Gross
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Three polyethylene glycol (PEG) based crosslinkers with repeat unit nominal weights of 62.1, 200, and 400 g/mol in agar/PAM double network (DN) hydrogels were used to study the effect of different crosslinkers on thermal and mechanical properties. Using the one-pot synthesis method, hydrogels with the PEG crosslinkers or methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAA) were made via sol-gel transition for formation of agar network, and photopolymerization of the PAM network using Irgacure 2959 as photo initiator. Tensile and compression tests were performed on as prepared, swollen, and swollen & cooled specimens of each hydrogel. Freezing time and thermal imaging were performed in -20 °C …
Complementary Techniques To Study The Behavior Of Water And The Effect On Diffusion And Degradation In Hydrogels, Paige Rockwell
Complementary Techniques To Study The Behavior Of Water And The Effect On Diffusion And Degradation In Hydrogels, Paige Rockwell
Master’s Theses
Hydrogels exhibit biocompatibility in a range of biomedical applications, including drug delivery. This thesis aims to develop complementary techniques to measure the diffusion and degradation behaviors within an injectable, hydrolytically degradable hydrogel, formed via the covalent crosslinking of ethoxylated trimethylolpropane tri-3- mercaptopropionate (ETTMP) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), to determine its suitability as a drug delivery matrix. The characterization of water as either free, within the network openings of the hydrogel, or bound, tightly associated with the polymer chains, was determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The mobility of each type of water within the hydrogels was determined via nuclear …
Effects Of Hofmeister Ions On Solubility And Swelling On Gelatin Hydrogels, Hannah Eldridge
Effects Of Hofmeister Ions On Solubility And Swelling On Gelatin Hydrogels, Hannah Eldridge
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Hydrogels are known to be weak and brittle, due to the amounts of water that they hold. Gelatin-based hydrogels specifically are inexpensive and easily accessible, but often have poor physical properties. The goal of my project was to strengthen gelatin-based hydrogels and improve their mechanical properties by forming these hydrogels in different aqueous solutions containing kosmotropic Hofmeister's ions. Prior research has shown that these ions are able to take water away from gelatin-based gels, which forms a tougher hydrogel. The success of this project will be measured by studying the solubility and swelling effects that different Hofmeister ions have on …
