Historically, tar-mats have been thought to impede primary oil extraction, thus necessitating further improved oil recovery (IOR) technology applications. However, this research considers tar-mats as potential sources for unlocking extremely difficult crude oil, less than 5 ⁰API. ”This work presents two new materials that can be potentially used in conformance control to increase ultimate oil recovery from mature oilfields.
The first product is a degradable nanocomposite preformed particle gel for enhanced in-depth mobility control. Three different types of degradable nanocomposite preformed particle gels were synthesized. These three nanocomposite hydrogels were made using Laponite XLG, Calcium Montmorillonite, and Sodium Montmorillonite nanomaterials. It was observed that after degradation, Laponite XLG nanocomposite hydrogels had the highest post-degradation viscosity (4437 cp), followed by sodium nanocomposite hydrogels (129 cp), and lastly calcium nanocomposite hydrogels (75.5 cp). Best practices for frac pack well completions ensure the highest possible quality for the well completion. A novel frac pack well completion score card was developed based on best practices for frac pack well completions identified through consultation with industry experts. "Reservoir heterogeneity and early water breakthrough (also known as fingering) represent two of the greatest challenges to recover crude oil efficiently. Gel treatments have been implemented as a cost-effective method to plug high permeability zones and thus improve sweep efficiency in reservoirs. However, when extensive cross-flows exist between formation layers, gel treatments become less efficient. Polymer was used in polymer flooding to increase the viscosity of the injected fluids and to correct the fingering problem. However, such treatment may be uneconomical since dramatic viscosity loss (80-90%) is caused by shearing degradation during the injection process near the wellbore.

"In this research, a study of the non-thermal method of alkaline-surfactant (AS) flooding to enhance heavy oil recovery from the Pennsylvanian Warner sandstone reservoir in Western Missouri was conducted. This work includ [sic] testing approximately 30 commercial surfactants and using a heavy oil sample with an API of 17. It was found that a number of surfactants could create stable emulsions. The viscosity of heavy oil could be reduced from 18,518 cp to 2.5 cp at 25⁰C through emulsification of certain surfactants. Fatigue is the most common cause of mini-HDD drill rod failure. It can occur at stress levels far below the normal operating stress in most drill stem components. "Phase equilibrium properties for the carbon dioxide - water - n-decane system were determined from pressure-temperature-volume (PVT) measurements. PVT properties were also obtained for pure carbon dioxide and water, and the binary mixtures of carbon dioxide - water and carbon dioxide - n-decane. The experiments were conducted at temperatures of 313.17, 353.15 and 393.15 Kelvin, and at pressures from 37 to 416 bar. Measurements for the mixtures were terminated when complete miscibility was observed.

"The primary objective of this study was the development of prediction equations for the water-oil imbibition relative permeability and gas-oil drainage relative permeability from experimental data.
Laboratory relative permeability data along with the corresponding rock and fluid properties were collected, and stepwise linear regression analysis was applied. Relative permeability models were developed in terms of rock and fluid properties.
The prediction models were tested against laboratory values and previously published correlations. It was found that the models developed in this study yield results that are generally in better agreement with experimental values than the previously published correlations"--Abstract p. ii

A mathematical model was developed for the prediction of reservoir response to heating by alternating electric current flow through the oil-bearing formations. One criterion for determining the precision of pressures calculated by a simulation model is the accuracy of the material balance. A high degree of precision in the calculated pressures is a necessary condition for elimination of error in prediction of fluid migration in the reservoir. An iterative method based on sequentially reducing the residual to zero at each grid point has been developed. It has been shown analytically that this residual relaxation method is stable, convergent, and consistent.

"A finite approximation to the conventional diffusivity equation describing compressible fluid flow through porous media has been developed with a view to apply it to the problems of optimum well spacing. An equilateral grid system has been employed to enable uniform well spacing for any number of wells.
