Mechanisms Of Emulsion Destabilization: An Investigation Of Surfactant, Stabilizer, And Detergent Based Formulations Using Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy, Jordan N. Nowaczyk

Theses and Dissertations

Conventional approaches for studying emulsions, such as microscopy and macroscopic phase tracking, present challenges when it comes to establishing detailed mechanistic descriptions of the impact of emulsifier and stabilizer additives. Additionally, while a combination of sizing methods and macroscopic phase tracking can provide insights into droplet size changes and concentration, the use of multiple measurements can be cumbersome and error-prone. It is the focus of this work, to present a new method for studying water in oil (W/O) emulsions that involves using diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) to examine the impact of three different surface stabilizing additives at varying concentrations. Relating Modified Ergun's Equation To Hindered Settling Correlations, Ryan Zahniser Jan 2021

Relating Modified Ergun's Equation To Hindered Settling Correlations, Ryan Zahniser

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Correlations were developed between the Modified Ergun’s and Hindered settling correlations under the condition of dense packing of particles in the bed. As the porosity of the slurry increases, so does the interference between particles in the solution which mimics the behavior of a packed or densely concentrated fluidized bed. The similarity between the two sets of conditions was modeled using mathematical equations to calculate settling velocities and pressure drops by means of the Hindered Settling correlations and Modified Ergun’s equation at porosities ranging from 0.4242 to 0.89. The results showed that a porosity of 0.52 and 0.009 ft particle …

Elucidating The Properties And Mechanism For Cellulose Dissolution In Tetrabutylphosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids Using High Concentrations Of Water, Brad Crawford Jan 2020

Elucidating The Properties And Mechanism For Cellulose Dissolution In Tetrabutylphosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids Using High Concentrations Of Water, Brad Crawford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The structural, transport, and thermodynamic properties related to cellulose dissolution by tetrabutylphosphonium chloride (TBPCl) and tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPH)-water mixtures have been calculated via molecular dynamics simulations. For both ionic liquid (IL)-water solutions, water veins begin to form between the TBPs interlocking arms at 80 mol % water, opening a pathway for the diffusion of the anions, cations, and water. The water veins allow for a diffusion regime shift in the concentration region from 80 to 92.5 mol % water, providing a higher probability of solvent interaction with the dissolving cellulose strand. The hydrogen bonding was compared between small and large …

Non-Invasive Detection And Assessment Of Coronary Stenosis From Blood Mean Residence Times., Javad Hashemi Dec 2019

Non-Invasive Detection And Assessment Of Coronary Stenosis From Blood Mean Residence Times., Javad Hashemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coronary artery stenosis is an abnormal narrowing of a coronary artery caused by an atherosclerotic lesion that reduces lumen space. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is the gold standard method to determine the severity of coronary stenosis based on the determination of rest and hyperemic pressure fields, but requires an invasive medical procedure. Normal FFR is 1.0 and FFR RT, to account for varying volume and flow rate of individual segments. BloodRT was computed in 100 patients who had undergone the pressure-wire FFR procedure, and a threshold for BloodRT was determined to assess the physiological significance of a stenosis, …

Stabilization Of Bimodal Colloidal Systems Via Nanoparticle Haloing In Microgravity., Luke Hawtrey Dec 2019

Stabilization Of Bimodal Colloidal Systems Via Nanoparticle Haloing In Microgravity., Luke Hawtrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colloidal suspensions typically contain a multi-phase system of solid particles suspended in a liquid medium. Colloids are widely used in industrial applications such as inks, paints, motor oils, foods, cosmetics, and many more. Colloidal systems are typically formed by the interaction of the attractive van der Waals forces and one or more repulsive forces. These repulsive forces include electrostatic repulsion, steric hindrance, and nanoparticle haloing. Nanoparticle Haloing (NPH) is a phenomenon discovered in 2001 as a viable method to stabilize colloidal systems of uncharged silica microparticles using highly charged zirconia nanoparticles. For this thesis the effects of NPH were tested …

Hydrodynamics Of A Gas-Driven Gas-Liquid-Solid Spouted Bed, Jia Meng Aug 2018

Hydrodynamics Of A Gas-Driven Gas-Liquid-Solid Spouted Bed, Jia Meng

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A novel cylindrical gas-driven gas-liquid-solid spouted bed was developed in this project, which has a high potential to be used for a biological wastewater treatment process. Solids motion, flow regimes, and regime transitions in this system were studied. With increasing gas velocity, four regimes were identified, including: fixed bed, semi spouted bed, full spouted bed and internal circulating fluidized bed. The respective gas velocities for the transitions between the four regimes were experimentally identified and termed as minimum spouting velocity, full spouting velocity and minimum circulating velocity. A new “basketing” method was adopted to measure the minimum spouting velocity while …

Bubble Dynamics And Dense Phase Composition In 2-D Binary Gas-Solid Fluidized Bed, Tianzi Bai

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gas-solid bubbling fluidized bed with binary particles is a potential candidate for performing the dry coal beneficiation process due to its advantages such as the ability to adjust separation density and the elimination of process water. A two-dimensional (2D) fluidized bed was used to study bubble dynamics and dense phase composition distribution in order to gain some fundamental understanding of this system. Digital image analysis (DIA) was employed to measure bubble diameter, bubble rise velocity, bed expansion and particle composition distribution. Magnetite and sand particles as pure and binary mixtures were used in the fluidized bed. Bubble diameter and bubble …

Modeling The Effect Thickener Structure Has On The Oil Release Of Grease, Dana Cressman Jan 2018

Modeling The Effect Thickener Structure Has On The Oil Release Of Grease, Dana Cressman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Our hypothesis was that the thickener type and micelle concentration of grease affected its viscoelastic properties. Measurements were made using a TA AR G2 rheometer and calculations were made using TA rheometer analysis software to characterize the viscoelastic response of grease under oscillatory shear and frequency tests. The oscillatory frequency tests determined the critical micelle concentration. The oscillatory stress tests were taken at temperatures from 5 to 65 degrees Celsius to create a master curve based on time temperature superposition of the measurements. The crossover points of G’ and G” on the oscillatory stress tests demonstrated where the grease transitions …

Novel Separation Methods Using Electrodialysis/Electrodeionization For Product Recovery And Power Generation, Alexander Miguel Lopez-Rosa

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of electrodialytic separations for the purification of products has been a vital technique for the past 50 years in the chemical industry. Originally used for demineralization and desalination, electrodialysis and its counterparts have expanded to assist in product purification, waste and hazard removal, and power generation. This research focused on the development of high purity organic acids purification with low power requirements. Work resulted in the development of a new type of electrodialysis process, specifically the use of ionic liquids as a secondary solvent for the development of dual solvent electrodialysis. Through dual solvent electrodialysis, ions were recovered …

Hydrodynamics In Recirculating Fluidized Bed Mimicking The Stripper Section Of The Fluid Coker, Francisco J. Sanchez Careaga Dec 2013

Hydrodynamics In Recirculating Fluidized Bed Mimicking The Stripper Section Of The Fluid Coker, Francisco J. Sanchez Careaga

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The stripper section of a Fluid CokerTM consists of a system of baffles (sheds) that enhances the removal of interstitial and adsorbed hydrocarbon vapors from the fluidized coke-particles. Most of the hydrocarbon-vapors released below a stripper shed flow up to the stripper shed, where they may crack and form coke deposits that foul the shed. Extensive fouling changes the shapes of the sheds, makes them thicker and reduces the free-space between the adjacent sheds until downward solids flow is so impaired that the Coker has to be shut down.

The Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) technique allows the determination of …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Jan 2013

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
