Biochemical Engineering

A critical assessment of pyrolysis technologies and reactor designs was discussed, highlighting various reactor configurations. This study explored the influence of catalysts, temperature, heating rate, and residence time on the pyrolysis process, and addressed their effects on product distribution and composition. Safety considerations and strategies for mitigating the potential environmental impacts of pyrolysis were presented. Comparative analyses of the environmental impacts of traditional waste disposal methods versus pyrolysis-based approaches provided insights into the potential reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. The circular economy approach was explored in the context of medical plastic waste pyrolysis. The potential for closing …

Constant-Ph Molecular Dynamics At Inorganic Interfaces: Adding A New Dimension To Simulations Of Interfacial Phenomena., Ted Kalbfleisch Aug 2024

Constant-Ph Molecular Dynamics At Inorganic Interfaces: Adding A New Dimension To Simulations Of Interfacial Phenomena., Ted Kalbfleisch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the application of novel molecular dynamics simulation methods to better understand complex systems, with a particular focus on silica materials and protein interactions. Silica materials, known for their versatile surface and solution chemistries, play critical roles in catalysis, chromatography, and wastewater treatment. Despite their widespread use, the molecular-level interactions between silica surfaces and their environments remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we employed λ-dynamics enabled constant pH molecular dynamics to dynamically model protonation and deprotonation events on silica surfaces. Traditional experimental techniques such as x-ray crystallography, NMR, and cryo-EM are inadequate for probing structures in …

Integrating Galectin-3 Into A Computational Model Of Cardiac Fibrosis Progression, Adam Pieratt May 2024

Integrating Galectin-3 Into A Computational Model Of Cardiac Fibrosis Progression, Adam Pieratt

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cardiac fibrosis, a large contributor to heart failure, is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix in response to stress or injury. There are no approved treatments for cardiac fibrosis, and targeting specific species involved creates complex problems for drug development, so a computational model of the cardiac fibroblast signaling network can be used to observe the interactions involved in the progression of cardiac fibrosis. In this paper, a new protein called galectin-3 is integrated into this existing model, and connections are established to expand the coverage of the network. The additions are described, simulated using Netflux biological system simulation software, …

Dpd Guided Insight On The Formation Process Of Polyethersulfone Membranes By Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation And The Effects Of Additives, Eric Ledieu May 2023

Dpd Guided Insight On The Formation Process Of Polyethersulfone Membranes By Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation And The Effects Of Additives, Eric Ledieu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), a coarse grain simulation method, was applied to the membrane formation process of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) to gain further insight on the mechanism of certain variables and how they affect the final morphology. NIPS involves two solutions, an organic polymer dissolved in an organic solvent colloquially called the dope and an aqueous coagulation bath, brought into contact with one another. The solvents then mix, causing the polymer to fall out of solution as an asymmetric membrane with a dense surface layer and a more open subsurface layer in response to the decreasing solubility. Polyethersulfone …

Photonic Crystal-Based Flow Cytometry, Justin William Stewart Oct 2014

Photonic Crystal-Based Flow Cytometry, Justin William Stewart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Photonic crystals serve as powerful building blocks for the development of lab-on-chip devices. Currently they are used for a wide range of miniaturized optical components such as extremely compact waveguides to refractive-index based optical sensors. Here we propose a new technique for analyzing and characterizing cells through the design of a micro-flow cytometer using photonic crystals. While lab scale flow cytometers have been critical to many developments in cellular biology they are not portable, difficult to use and relatively expensive. By making a miniature sensor capable of replicating the same functionality as the large scale units with photonic crystals, we …

Simulation Of Corn Stover And Distillers Grains Gasification With Aspen Plus, Ajay Kumar, Hossein Noureddini, Yaşar Demirel, David Jones, Milford Hanna Jan 2009

Simulation Of Corn Stover And Distillers Grains Gasification With Aspen Plus, Ajay Kumar, Hossein Noureddini, Yaşar Demirel, David Jones, Milford Hanna

Yaşar Demirel Publications

A model was developed to simulate the performance of a lab‐scale gasifier and predict the flowrate and composition of product from given biomass composition and gasifier operating conditions using Aspen Plus software. Mass balance, energy balance, and minimization of Gibbs free energy during the gasification were applied to determine the product gas composition. Carbon conversion efficiency and tar content were provided to the model as inputs as these could not be predicted by the model based on minimization of Gibbs free energy. Experiments for validation of the model were performed on a lab‐scale fluidized bed gasifier using corn stover and …

Simulation Of Nanostructured Electrodes For Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Sanjeev M. Rao, Yangchuan Xing Dec 2008

Simulation Of Nanostructured Electrodes For Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Sanjeev M. Rao, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with Pt uniformly deposited on them are being considered in fabricating the catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell electrodes. When coated with a proton conducting polymer (e.g., Nafion) on the Pt/CNTs, each Pt/CNT acts as a nanoelectrode and a collection of such nanoelectrodes constitutes the proposed nanostructured electrodes. Computer modeling was performed for the cathode side, in which both multicomponent and Knudsen diffusion were taken into account. the effect of the nanoelectrode lengths was also studied with catalyst layer thicknesses of 2, 4, 6, and 10 μm. It was observed that shorter lengths …

Affinity Adsorption Of Adsorbates Into Spherical Monodisperse And Bidisperse Porous Perfusive And Purely Diffusive Adsorbent Particles Packed In A Column. Parameter Estimation In The Laplace Transform Domain, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis Jan 1997

Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel mathematical method for parameter estimation is proposed and used to estimate in the Laplace transform domain the values of the parameters that characterize the mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion and convection in spherical perfusive or purely diffusive adsorbent particles with a monodisperse or with a bidisperse porous structure when the adsorbent particles are packed in a column. The parameter estimation method in the Laplace transform domain presented in this work is significantly simpler, easier to use and dramatically faster than the conventional parameter estimation procedure in the time domain, which requires the repeated numerical solution of the partial differential …
