Ionic liquid pilocarpine analog [Pilo-OEG]Cl, the first-of-its-kind ionic liquid antiglaucoma drug candidate, is synthesized and reported. To synthesize [Pilo-OEG]Cl, pilocarpine was reacted with the oligo-polyethylene glycol chloride, 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethoxy] ethanol, to form an ionic liquid molecule with an imidazole cation and a chloride anion. The chemical structure of [Pilo-OEG]Cl was confirmed with 1H NMR spectroscopy. Compared with pilocarpine (Pilo) and pilocarpine hydrochloride (PiloHCl), [Pilo-OEG]Cl has improved structural stability according to pH measurements and LC-MS analysis. The corneal permeability coefficient of [Pilo-OEG]Cl is 2-fold higher than that of Pilo and 8-fold higher than that of PiloHCl. [Pilo-OEG]Cl does not show apparent toxicity …

Flashpoint of organic materials is a crucial physical property in industrial applications and laboratory experiments, which provides information on safety standards and needed precautions in handling various organic materials. Proposed methods to determine the flashpoint of an organic material suffer from dependency on other physical properties of the chemical or demand complicated calculations which are time-consuming. In this work, a direct system model is proposed to anticipate the flashpoints of organic materials for a wide range of chemical compounds. The following models of genetic algorithm-adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, the least-squares version of the support vector machine, particle swarm optimization-adaptive neuro-fuzzy …

Energy poverty, defined as a lack of access to reliable electricity and reliance on traditional biomass resources for cooking, affects over a billion people daily. The World Health Organization estimates that household air pollution from inefficient stoves causes more premature deaths than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Increasing demand for energy has led to dramatic increases in emissions. The need for reliable electricity and limiting emissions drives research on Resilient Hybrid Energy Systems (RHESs), which provide cleaner energy through combining wind, solar, and biomass energy with traditional fossil energy, increasing production efficiency and reliability and reducing generating costs and emissions. Microgrids …

Impact Of Ultrathin Coating Layer On Lithium-Ion Intercalation Into Particles For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Yufang He, Hiep Pham, Xinhua Liang, Jonghyun Park

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ultrathin film coatings on battery materials via atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been demonstrated as an efficient technology for battery performance enhancement. However, the fundamental understanding on lithium intercalation into active materials through the interface between the coating and active materials is unclear, which makes it difficult to optimize ALD coating strategies. Further, like most active materials, a coating layer can undergo volume change during the intercalation process, which can produce detrimental structural changes and mechanical failure of the layer. In this work, first-principles calculations are conducted to reveal the behavior of a coating layer on an active material particle …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) was deposited onto Ni/Al2O3 catalyst as overcoating by atomic layer deposition (ALD) for dry reforming of methane (DRM). High-temperature heating during H2-reduction could transform the ALD-prepared ZrO2 thin film to tetragonal phase and crack the encapsulating layer on Ni sites, which constructed a beneficial Ni-ZrOx interface. Interfacial surface oxygen vacancies on ZrO2 overcoating were induced by the partial reduction of ZrO2 surface during high-temperature H2 reduction, with the assistance of Ni. During DRM, the interfacial oxygen vacancies enhanced CO2 activation by dissociating CO2 …

Nickel-rich cathode materials attract a lot of attention due to their high energy density. However, their sensitivity to air and moisture hinders their practical applications. Exposing Ni-rich NMC in the air will produce by-products that are not conducive to lithium-ion transmission. Water washing can be used to remove by-products on the surface, but it can also introduce new problems, such as the generation of NiO on the particle surface, which will reduce the electrochemical performance of the material. In this study, Al2O3atomic layer deposition (ALD) was applied on degraded NMC811 particles to recover the electrochemical performance …

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is used to manage bone loss in revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA). However, the application of PMMA has been associated with complications such as volumetric shrinkage, necrosis, wear debris, and loosening. Glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) have potential bone cementation applications. Unlike PMMA, GPC does not undergo volumetric shrinkage, adheres chemically to bone, and does not undergo an exothermic setting reaction. In this study, two different compositions of GPCs (GPCA and GPCB), based on the patented glass system SiO2-CaO-SrO-P2O5-Ta2O5, were investigated. Working and setting times, pH, ion release, …
