Network Model Investigation Of Gas Transport In Bidisperse Porous Adsorbents, John H. Petropoulos, John K. Petrou, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A capillary network model consisting of a micropore network permeated by one of macropores of randomly varying size has been constructed. Although simplified (to keep computer space and time requirements low) in relation to a real bidisperse porous adsorbent or catalyst, it embodies the salient pore structural features likely to determine the gas-transport behavior of such porous solids. Suitable model calculations of Knudsen gas-phase and surface diffusion enabled us to (i) validate useful approximate methods for the more economical evaluation of network permeability and (ii) demonstrate certain important characteristic effects of nonrandom bidisperse pore structure on transport behavior and their …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

New pressure-temperature-overall composition vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data are reported for the ammonia-water system at five temperatures between 20 and 140 °C and up to 500 pela. These data have been converted to T-P-x data, and vapor-phase compositions have been calculated by means of a Rediich-Kwong equation of state modified to Include Peneloux's volume translation and a density-dependent mixing rule. In order to achieve agreement of calculated vapor-phase compositions with previous literature results, H was necessary to use different kij values In the vapor and liquid phases. © 1991, American Chemical Society. Increased Separation By Variable-Temperature Stepwise Desorption In Multicomponent Adsorption Processes, Suvit Kulvaranon, Marshall E. Findley, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When more components than desired are adsorbed, adsorption-desorption separation processes may not be satisfactory. However, in the cases of ethanol and water adsorption on activated carbon, propane and propylene adsorption on molecular sieves, and hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and propane adsorption on molecular sieves, it has been found that a variable-temperature stepwise desorption (VTSD) procedure following the adsorption stage can significantly increase the degree of separation achieved compared to a complete desorption of all adsorbed components. Studies indicate that these increased separations are in part due to nonequilibrium effects. An estimation of economic factors in separating low concentration propylene in …

Effect Of Viscoplastic Flow Rules On The Initiation And Growth Of Shear Bands At High Strain Rates, R. C. Batra, Chang-Soo Kim

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Marchand and Duffy have reported detailed measurements of the temperature and strain as a shear band develops in a HY-100 steel. Assuming their torsional tests in thin-wall tubes can be adequately modeled by a viscoplastic block undergoing overall adiabatic simple shearing deformations, we investigate the effect of modeling the viscoplastic response of the material by a.power law, and flow rules proposed by Litonski, Bodner and Partom, and Johnson and Cook. Each of these flow rules is first calibrated by using the test data at a nominal strain-rate of 3300 s-1. Then predictions from the use of these flow rules at …

Oxygen Tension Profiles In Tumors Predicted By A Diffusion With Absorption Model Involving A Moving Free Boundary, B. H. Arve, Athanasios I. Liapis Jan 1988

Oxygen Tension Profiles In Tumors Predicted By A Diffusion With Absorption Model Involving A Moving Free Boundary, B. H. Arve, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamic behavior of the oxygen tension distribution in tumors during radiotherapy is studied by the development and solution of a diffusion with absorption model involving a moving free boundary. The oxygen uptake rates within the tumor are considered to be functions of the oxygen concentration and results are presented for zeroth-, half-, first- and second-order rates of absorption, as well as when the rate of oxygen absorption is described by the Michaelis-Menten expression. The results presented in this work may be used together with the data from the oxygen radiosensitivity curve of a tumor, in order to determine the …

Modeling And Analysis Of Biospecific Adsorption In A Finite Bath, B. H. Arve, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A general model is presented and used to predict the dynamic behavior of the adsorption and wash stages of bio specific adsorption (affinity chromatography) in a finite bath. The model accounts for film and diffusional mass transfer resistances as well as for the rates of interaction between adsorbates and ligands. The model is applicable to single and multicomponent bio specific as well as nonspecific adsorption, and the adsorbates may be monovalent or multivalent. The predictions of the model are compared with the experimental data of the adsorption of β‐galactosidase onto immobilized anti‐β‐galactosidase. The results of bio specific adsorption of bivalent …

Linear Process Calculations As Convergence Accelerators In Flowsheet‐Sequenced Programs, S. M. Milani, Marshall E. Findley

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Linear process calculations were developed for use in conjunction with flow‐sheet‐sequenced calculations, as methods of convergence acceleration. Two such methods were compared with the successive substitution and Wegstein methods on relatively simple processes. "Linear Process Simulation," which requires user‐derived equations, produced the best results. Copyright © 1986 American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Current atmospheric observations tend to support the view that continental tropospheric aerosols (particularly urban aerosols) show multimodal mass distributions in the size range of 0.01-100 μm. The origin of these aerosols is both natural and anthropogenic. Recently, trimodal sub-μm size distributions from combustion measurements at 0.008, 0.035 and 0.15 μm were also observed. Our interest in the present study is the secondary process of growth of sub-μm size aerosols by the coagulation process alone. Using the 'J-space' (integer-space) distribution method of Salk (Suck) and Brock (1979, J. Aerosol Sci. 10, 58-590), we report an accurate numerical simulation study of the …

Solution To The Piecewise Linear Continuous Random Initial Value Problem For Burgers' Equation, Yin Chin Shih, X. B. Reed, Jr.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A closed form solution to Burgers' equation on an infinite domain has been obtained for "random sawtooth" continuous initial conditions defined on a finite domain. The "turbulent" solution is then used to compute statistical measures such as skewness and flatness factors, energy decay rates, and the temporal evolution of velocity autocorrelations and energy spectra. © 1985 American Institute of Physics.

An Analysis Of The Lyophilization Process Using A Sorption‐Sublimation Model And Various Operational Policies, M. J. Millman, Athanasios I. Liapis, J. M. Marchello

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The freeze‐drying process is studied under various operational policies through the use of a sorption‐sublimation model. The operational policy that provides the shortest drying times keeps the pressure at its lowest value. The upper and lower heating plates are independently controlled so that the material constraints are encountered and held throughout the free water removal phase. Under certain conditions, and for the case of samples of small thickness, the sorbed water profiles may have segments whose bound water concentrations are higher than those at the start of the free water removal phase. It is shown that the criterion used in …

Structural Analysis And Solution Of Systems Of Algebraic Design Equations, N. (Neil) L. Book, W. F. Ramirez

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method for expressing the structure of a system of equations is developed using a type of occurrence matrix entitled the functionality matrix. The functionality matrix indicates not only the occurrence of variables in equations but also the functional form in which they occur. Since the difficulty of solving an equation for a variable is related to its functional form, analysis of the functionality matrix provides explicit information on the difficulty of solution of the solution of the equation. A methodology for the solution of design problems by digital computers is described. This methodology operates on the functionality matrix …

Energy Storage Capacity Of Reversible Liquid‐Phase Diels Alder Reaction Between Maleic Anhydride And 2‐Methyl Furan, B. G. Sparks, Bruce E. Poling Jan 1983

Energy Storage Capacity Of Reversible Liquid‐Phase Diels Alder Reaction Between Maleic Anhydride And 2‐Methyl Furan, B. G. Sparks, Bruce E. Poling

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Calorimetry was used to determine the heat of reaction and equilibrium constant at 318 K for the reaction between maleic anhydride (A) and 2‐methyl furan (B). The values were −60 kJ/gmol and 614 cm3/gmol, respectively. The motivation for this work was to find a single phase‐reacting system that could be used to store solar energy. Thus, the energy storage capacity was calculated for a mixture of A and B, both initially at 7 kmol/m3, in dioxane. The maximum apparent heat capacity of 7.37 J/cm3·K occurred at 334 K. This maximum value is 76% higher than the heat capacity of pure …

Approximate Solutions For Distillation Rating And Operating Problems Using The Smoker Equations, Raymond C. Waggoner, Terry L. Tolliver

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Algorithms for rapid solution of implicit variables in the Smoker design equations are presented. The accuracy of these solutions in the context of distillation rating and operating problems Is evaluated for distillation systems where more rigorous physical property assumptions are known to apply. Alternative methods of initially fitting the Smoker equations to rigorous tray-by-tray material and energy balance calculations as well as methods extending the procedure to handle multicomponent systems are discussed. These methods are well suited for many optimization, reliability, and control studies as well as for the fast real-time calculations such as interactive computations or on-line control. © …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Zns Electrodes In Sulfuric Acid Solutions, Ram A. Narasagoudar, James W. Johnson, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of reagent grade ZnS and ZnS concentrate has been studied. The majority of the research was conducted in H2SO4 although a limited number of tests were made in HCl and KOH. Polarization studies showed that both Zn2+ and S were products in the acidic solutions. ZnS passivated in KOH solutions. The electrodes were fabricated by hand pressing mixtures of ZnS + pitch (5-15%) and sintering at 800°C in a N2 atmosphere. The open circuit potentials were considered to be mixed potentials resulting from the anodic dissolution of ZnS and cathodic reduction of S …

Application Of Generalized Geometric Programming In Preliminary Plant Design, Dennis R. Hoerner, Orrin K. Crosser Apr 1981

Application Of Generalized Geometric Programming In Preliminary Plant Design, Dennis R. Hoerner, Orrin K. Crosser

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study utilizes a primal based generalized geometric programming algorithm for the optimal design of a model absorber-stripper process. The GGP algorithm reduces the generalized geometric program to a convex, linear program by two sequential condensation procedures and a logarithmic transformation. Although inactive Inequality constraints and arbitrary variable bounds were easily accommodated by the algorithm, considerable effort was required to activate the inequality constraints which required an equality condition. The GGP algorithm converged to a local minimum from arbitrary starting points for approximately 60% of the trials. © 1981, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Ethylene Process Optimization. Constraint Relaxation And Bounds Adjustment, Kenneth R. Jinkerson, James L. Gaddy

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heavily constrained, mixed integer optimization problems present a difficult test for optimization algorithms. This paper examines optimization of the ethylene process (from ethane) using a flowsheet simulation model and the adaptive random search. Optimization resulted in an improvement in annual earnings of $1.15 MM over the usual ethylene process design. This process has both continuous and discrete variables and has sensitive implicit constraints in the pyrolysis furnace. The search efficiency was found to be improved by relaxing these constraints early in the search and then restoring the constraints as the optimum is approached. The search efficiency was also improved by …

The plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is studied in a capacitively coupled system with internal electrodes using a 10 kHz (af) and a 60 Hz (ac) source. The emphasis is on identifying conditions that are compatible with continuous coating of plasma polymer on a substrate moving through the center of the interelectrode gap. Operation at a pressure below 100 mTorr is most favorable for deposition of a substantial portion of the plasma polymer on this substrate. Plasma polymer deposited in this way is characterized by ESCA and by deposition rate data and compared to that deposited using rf power in …

Mechanical Degradation Of High Molecular Weight Polymers In Dilute Solution, J. F.S. Yu, J. L. Zakin, Gary Kent Patterson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical shear degradation of polydisperse Poly isobutene and monodisperse polystyrene in oils of different viscosities in the concentration range of 0.1% to 1% was studied using a high‐shear concentric cylinder viscometer under laminar and uniform well‐defined shear field conditions. Molecular weight distributions (MWDs) were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Degradation of polydisperse Poly isobutene solutions narrows the distributions principally through the breaking down of large molecules. Degradation of monodisperse polystyrene broadens the distributions at lower shear stress. At higher shear stresses, the distributions do not broaden as much but are still broader than those of the original polymer. …
