The formation of composite films of double-stranded DNA and cationic lipid molecules (octadecylamine, ODA) and the hybridization of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules in such composite films are demonstrated. The immobilization of DNA is accomplished by simple immersion of a thermally evaporated ODA film in the DNA solution at close to physiological pH. The entrapment of the DNA molecules in the cationic lipid film is dominated by attractive electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged phosphate backbone of the DNA molecules and the protonated amine molecules in the thermally evaporated film and has been quantified using quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM). Fluorescence studies …

Hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides mediated by a cationic surfactant at the water/hexane interface leads to hydrophobic, double-helical DNA which may be readily phase transferred to the organic phase and cast into thin films on solid substrates.

Evaluating the in vivo accuracy of magnetic resonance phase velocity mapping (PVM) is not straightforward because of the absence of a validated clinical flow quantification technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate PVM by investigating its precision, both in vitro and in vivo, in a 1.5 Tesla scanner. In the former case, steady and pulsatile flow experiments were conducted using an aortic model under a variety of flow conditions (steady: 0.1–5.5 L/min; pulsatile: 10–75 mL/cycle). In the latter case, PVM measurements were taken in the ascending aorta of ten subjects, seven of which had aortic regurgitation. Each velocity …

Novel Processing Of Hydroxyapatite-Zirconia Composites Using Nano-Sized Particles, Mark R. Towler, I. R. Gibson, S. M. Best

A method to produce composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) with ZrO2 (Y-TZP) additions between 0 and 10 wt % at a low sinter temperature of 750 °C is presented. The method limits the amount of reaction between the HA and ZrO2. A ZrO2 loading level that would improve strength while limiting the decomposition of the HA is studied.

Hybridization Of Dna By Sequential Immobilization Of Oligonucleotides At The Air-Water Interface, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Anand Gole, K. N. Ganesh

The hybridization of DNA by sequential electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding immobilization of single-stranded complementary oligonucleotides at the air-water interface with cationic Langmuir monolayers is demonstrated. The complexation of the single-stranded DNA molecules with octadecylamine (ODA) Langmuir monolayers was followed in time by monitoring the pressure-area isotherms. A large (and slow) expansion of the ODA monolayer was observed during each stage of complexation in the following sequence: primary single-stranded DNA followed by complementary single-stranded DNA followed by the intercalator, ethidium bromide. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the ODA-DNA complex were formed on different substrates and characterized using quartz-crystal microgravimetry (QCM), Fourier transform infrared …

This investigates the effects of the addition of Na and F ions to a glass ionomer cement in which those ions are not inherently present on its interactions with dilute (0.2%) NaF solution. Both the effect of the solution on the cement's surface morphology and the effect of the cement on the solution in terms of take up of Na+ and F- and of change in pH are to be investigated. These results are to be compared to previous results obtained with glasses which contained both, one, or neither of the ions as components of their glasses. NaF …
The Influence Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Molar Mass On The Properties Of Polyalkenoate Cements Formed From Zinc Oxide/Apatite Mixtures, Sinead Kenny, Robert G. Hill, Mark R. Towler
The Influence Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Molar Mass On The Properties Of Polyalkenoate Cements Formed From Zinc Oxide/Apatite Mixtures, Sinead Kenny, Robert G. Hill, Mark R. Towler
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The influence of poly (acrylic acid) molar mass was investigated on cements formed from zinc oxide-apatite mixtures at three aging times: one, seven and 28 days. Cements based on both hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite were investigated. The compressive strength, un-notched fracture strength and fracture toughness increased markedly with poly (acrylic acid) molar mass. The fracture toughness and un-notched fracture strength increased with aging time for the two highest molar mass cements but decreased with time for the two lowest molar mass cements. The greater chain entanglement density present in the higher molar mass cements is thought to contribute significantly to the …

Purple membrane (PM, λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue (λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4 show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of …

Lntracrystalline Diffusion Of Benzene In Silicalite : Effect Of Structural Heterogeneity, Dhananjai B. Shah, Chang-Jie Guo, David T. Hayhurst
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The sorption kinetics of benzene in silicalite have been measured gravimetrically using large silicalite crystals of sizes 350 µm × 105 µm × 105 µm and 270 µm × 70 µm × 70 µm in the temperature range 283–343 K. Experiments were performed under conditions that ensured isothermal operation with intracrystalline diffusion control. An analytical expression for the Darken's correction factor (δ In P/δ In a) was derived based on the Hill–de-Boer equation and was used to determine the variation of corrected diffusivity with concentration. The transport diffusivity varied significantly with the adsorbed-phase concentration but the …
