Minimizing Formation Damage For Preformed Particle Gels Treatment In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud Omran Elsharafi Jan 2013

Minimizing Formation Damage For Preformed Particle Gels Treatment In Mature Reservoirs, Mahmoud Omran Elsharafi

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research studied the effect of preformed particle gels (PPGs) on unswept, low-permeable zones/areas. The objective was to find methods that minimized the damage caused by PPGs on unswept, low-permeable zones/areas, thus improving PPG treatment efficiency. These results can help to identify of the best PPG types, particle sizes, and brine concentrations for specific reservoirs and treatments. This study used sandstone core samples with various degrees of permeability. Two types of particle gels, a strong Daqing gel (DQ) and a weak Liquiblock™ 40k gel (40K), were used, each with a different strength.

This research included two stages. Firstly, both a …

Heat Transfer And Bubble Dynamics In Bubble And Slurry Bubble Columns With Internals For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Of Clean Alternative Fuels And Chemicals, Moses Odongo O. Kagumba Jan 2013

Heat Transfer And Bubble Dynamics In Bubble And Slurry Bubble Columns With Internals For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Of Clean Alternative Fuels And Chemicals, Moses Odongo O. Kagumba

Doctoral Dissertations

"Synthesis gas, a mixture of CO and H₂ obtained from coal, natural gas and biomass are increasingly becoming reliable sources of clean synthetic fuels and chemicals and via Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis process. Slurry bubble column reactor is the reactor of choice for the commercialization of the F-T synthesis. Even though the slurry bubble column reactors and contactors are simple in structures, their design, scale-up, operation, and performance prediction are still challenging and not well understood due to complex interaction of phases. All the studies of heat transfer have been performed without simultaneously investigating the bubble dynamics adjacent to the heat …

Scaleup And Hydrodynamics Study Of Gas-Solid Spouted Beds, Shreekanta Basavaraj Aradhya Jan 2013

Scaleup And Hydrodynamics Study Of Gas-Solid Spouted Beds, Shreekanta Basavaraj Aradhya

Doctoral Dissertations

"A thorough understanding of the complex flow structure of gas-solid spouted bed is crucial for design, scale-up and performance. Advanced gas-solid optical probes were developed and used to evaluate different hydrodynamic parameters of spouted beds. These optical probes measure solids concentration, velocity and their time series fluctuations. Since solids concentration needs to be converted to solids holdup through calibration, for meaningful interpretation of results, a novel calibration method was proposed (which is inexpensive and reliable compared to the current reported methods) and validated in the present study. The reported dimensionless groups approach of spouted bed scale-up was assessed and was …

Establishing Well Operability Limits For Frac Pack Sandface Well Completions Using A Screen Erosion Model And Well Completion Score Card, Rickey Hendrix Jan 2013

Establishing Well Operability Limits For Frac Pack Sandface Well Completions Using A Screen Erosion Model And Well Completion Score Card, Rickey Hendrix

Doctoral Dissertations

"Completion quality has a direct impact upon the maximum production rate at which a frac pack well should be operated. Best practices for frac pack well completions ensure the highest possible quality for the well completion. A novel frac pack well completion score card was developed based on best practices for frac pack well completions identified through consultation with industry experts. The score card systematically combines and assesses completions data readily available standard completion reports. The outcome of the score card process is a numerical completion quality rating, which combines all well design and frac pack operations information.

The completion …

Nanoscale Metal Oxide And Supported Metal Catalysts For Li-Air Battery, Kan Huang Jan 2013

Nanoscale Metal Oxide And Supported Metal Catalysts For Li-Air Battery, Kan Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation work focuses on research and development of durable nanoscale catalysts and supports for rechargeable Li-air batteries that use aqueous catholytes. Transition metal oxides, TiO2 and Nb2O5 in particular, were prepared from a sol-gel process in the form of nanocoatings (5~50 nm) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and studied as catalyst supports. Carbon doping in the oxides and post annealing significantly increased their electronic conductivity. Pt catalyst on the support with TiO2 (Pt/c-TiO2/CNTs) showed a much better oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity than a commercial Pt on carbon black (Pt/C). Negligible loss ( …

Characterization Of Macromolecular Structure Of Pyrolysis Products From A Colorado Green River Oil Shale, James L. Hillier, Thomas H. Fletcher, Mark S. Solum, Ronald J. Pugmire Jan 2013

Characterization Of Macromolecular Structure Of Pyrolysis Products From A Colorado Green River Oil Shale, James L. Hillier, Thomas H. Fletcher, Mark S. Solum, Ronald J. Pugmire

Faculty Publications

Volatile products from an oil shale from the Colorado Green River formation were studied by several methods. The oil shale was demineralized, and the resulting kerogen was also chemically analyzed. Both the oil shale and the demineralized kerogen were pyrolyzed at 10 K/min, and the pyrolysis products (light gas, tar, and char) were analyzed using 13C NMR, XPS, GC/MS, and FTIR. Low temperature ashing was performed in order to compare pyrolysis yields of oil shale and demineralized kerogen on a dry ash-free basis. Volatile yields of approximately 75% were achieved in an oil shale retort and 79% in the kerogen …

Time-Dependent Deposition Characteristics Of Fine Coal Fly Ash In A Laboratory Gas Turbine Environment, Robert Laycock, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2013

Time-Dependent Deposition Characteristics Of Fine Coal Fly Ash In A Laboratory Gas Turbine Environment, Robert Laycock, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Time-dependent deposition characteristics of fine coal fly ash were measured in the Turbine Accelerated Deposition Facility (TADF) at Brigham Young University. Two samples of subbituminous coal fly ash, with mass mean diameters of 3 and 13 microns, were entrained in a hot gas flow with a gas temperature of 1288 C and Mach number of 0.25. A nickel-based, superalloy metal coupon approximately 0.3 cm thick was held in a hot particle-laden gas stream to simulate deposition in a gas turbine. Tests were conducted with deposition times of 20, 40, and 60 min. Capture efficiencies and surface roughness characteristics (e.g., Ra) …

Prediction Of Sawdust Pyrolysis Yields From A Flat-Flame Burner Using The Cpd Model, Aaron D. Lewis, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2013

Prediction Of Sawdust Pyrolysis Yields From A Flat-Flame Burner Using The Cpd Model, Aaron D. Lewis, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

High heating rate pyrolysis experiments were performed on a softwood sawdust in a flat-flame burner reactor at temperatures from 1163 to 1433 K with particle residence times ranging from 23 to 102 ms at atmospheric pressure. Volatile yields of the 45−75 μm sawdust were measured and are believed to be similar to those that would occur in an industrial entrained-flow combustor or gasifier. A refractory tar yield near 1.5 wt % (dry, ash-free) was measured. A high percentage of the fully pyrolyzed sawdust char was spherical, having lost the original sawdust structure. It is suggested that the morphology of sawdust …

Preparation Of Cobalt/Nickel Molybdenum Sulfide Catalysts Supported By Aqueous Media Soluble Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes., Hassan Ahmad Bleibel

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been subjected to chemical treatment in order to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on their surfaces. These covalently bonded groups did enhance the solubility of MWCNTs in aqueous media as expected. Functionalized MWCNTs were characterized using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, X-ray diffraction, dispersion test and TEM. Then, functionalized MWCNTs were incorporated in the hydrothermal synthesis method of transition metal sulfide catalysts (CoMo, NiMo, and Ethylenediamine-CoMo Sulfides). Catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, TEM, SEM, N2 Gas adsorption-desorption, elemental analysis, and Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The objective was to study the functionalized MWCNTs' effect; being …
