Adsorption and reduction of NO on electrode of Pt nanoparticles in acid solutions were studied by means of cyclic voltammetry(CV) and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy.The results indicated that the reduction of NO is a complicated process including the adsorption of NO on electrode surface.Two types of surface-bonded NO were determined on Pt nanoparticles.The weakly adsorbed NO was reduced between 0.6 V and-0.05 V,which yielded nitrous oxide(N2O) and ammonium(NH4+) as products;while the strongly bonded NO was reduced at more negative potentials between-0.05V and-0.15V,producing only NH4+ species.

The MnO2 microspheres were prepared through the oxidation of KMnO4 and MnCO3 microspheres precursor.The microstructure and supercapacitor properties of MnO2 were characterized by XRD,SEM and CV.The results show that MnO2 was in a poorly crystalline state with α-crystallographic form,the size of microspheres typically ranged from 0.5 to 2 μm.Loading 5 mg·cm-2 MnO2 microspheres had excellent capacitance behaviors in 2 mol·L-1(NH4)2SO4 solution.The specific capacitance was 135.6 F·g-1 with the scan rate at 2 mV·s-1,and 118.8 F·g-1 with the large scan rate at 100 …

In this paper,Nafion membrane was used as the separator in the electrolysis cell to indirectly electro-generating the double aldehyde starch(DAS) with BrO3-/Br-as a redox mediator and Pb as an anode.Effects of temperature,concentration of sulfuric acid and starch on the electro-oxidation of DAS were discussed.The steady state polarization curves were obtained.The experiment results showed that the current efficiency was over 50% when the electrolysis current density was 15mA/ cm2.

Kirkwood-Buff (KB) solution theory is a means to obtain certain thermodynamic derivatives from knowledge of molecular distributions. In actual practice the required integrals over radial distribution functions suffer inaccuracies due to finite-distance truncation effects and their use in closed systems. In this work we discuss how best to minimize these inaccuracies under traditional KB theory. In addition we implement a method for calculating KB quantities in molecular simulations with periodic boundary conditions and particularly within the canonical ensemble. In addition to providing the molecular machinery for transcription and translation, recombinant microbial expression hosts maintain the critical genotype-phenotype link that is essential for high throughput screening and recovery of proteins encoded by plasmid libraries. It is known that Escherichia coli cells can be simultaneously transformed with multiple unique plasmids and thusly complicate recombinant library screening experiments. As a result of their potential to yield misleading results, bacterial multiple vector transformants have been thoroughly characterized in previous model studies. PtPd nanoparticle superlattices were prepared at room temperature and investigated for their restructuring at elevated temperatures. the PtPd nanoparticles were spherical with a diameter of 3.5±0.3nm and were capped with surfactants of oleic acids and oleylamine. Images of the nanoparticle superlattices were taken using a transmission electron microscope. Analysis of the images with fast Fourier transform (FFT) revealed whether the superlattices were crystalline or amorphous. It was found that the critical temperature that induced a phase transition of PtPd superlattices from a crystalline state to an amorphous state fall in the range of 100-110 °C. A method is provided for producing a permeable membrane, comprising the steps of aligning a plurality of hollow nanotubules to form a mat, coating the mat with a continuous polymer matrix to form a membrane. Magnetic field effect on CaCO3 precipitation is the key parameter in evaluating the effectiveness of Anti-scale Magnetic Treatment (AMT). The purpose of this study was to investigate magnetic fields influence on CaCO3 precipitation in high and low super-saturated CaCO3 solution by varied pH CaCO3 solution using circulation flow fluid system. The observation results in the high super saturated solution (pH 8.5) showed the increase of precipited CaCO3 in magnetized solutions compared to those in non-magnetic solution during circulation process. This study was concerned with the fabrication of ceramic CaO-SrO-ZnO-SiO2 spherical particles, which are novel candidates for the glass phase in glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs). GPCs made from these glasses have potential as bone cements because, unlike conventional GPCs, they do not contain aluminum ions, which inhibit the calcification of hydroxyapatite in the body. The glass phase of GPCs require a controllable glass morphology and particle size distribution. Hydrothermal treatment is traditionally employed to improve the sinterability of powder compacts by reducing porosity and increasing apparent density. The effect of hydrothermal treatment on green powder compacts has been assessed in order to better understand how treatment may affect the sinter ability of the bodies. Laboratory synthesized nano sized hydroxyapatite (HA) and a commercial zirconia (ZrO2) powder have been ball milled together to create composite mixtures containing 0-5 wt% ZrO2 loadings. Ca-Sr-Zn-Si glasses have demonstrated excellent biocompatibility both in vitro using the MTT assay with L929 mouse fibroblast cells, and in vivo using healthy and ovariectomized female Wistar rats. However, the biological evaluation of the materials was performed on glass granules that were autoclaved, rather than γ-irradiated; the sterilisation procedure required prior to implantation of these materials in the human body. Rapid, portable detection of biological threat agents such as Bacillus anthracis endospores (“spores”) is extremely important given the real and perceived threats of bioterrorism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an excellent general means for chemical detection, although special sample preparation and specialized equipment are required to employ GC-MS for detecting biological agents such as spores in the field. One of the most interesting applications for carbon nanotubes is as a support material for bioanalytical devices. in this work, we successfully used an ultraviolet light initiated "graft from" polymerization method to fabricate polymer functionalized carbon nanotubes (PFCNTs) with pendant chains of various functionalities, including poly (ethylene glycol) chains to boost dispersibility and pendant epoxy groups for protein conjugate sites. a model enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, was used to study biomolecule loading efficiency as well as the retention of enzyme activity. A simplified approach to increase neuronal attachment on an agarose hydrogel was proposed by blending agarose with another biocompatible polysaccharide, chitosan. The stiffness of the agarose gel was maintained despite the inclusion of chitosan, as determined by rheological tests. The structure of the blended hydrogels was characterized using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. An in vitro cell study revealed that the blends promoted neuron adhesion. The concentration of chitosan in the hydrogel had great influence on the morphology of neurons. An optimum range of chitosan concentration in agarose gel, to enhance neural cell attachment and differentiation, was identified based …

Moving horizon estimation (MHE) is a numerical optimization based approach to state estimation, where the joint probability density function (pdf) of a finite state trajectory is sought, which is conditioned on a moving horizon of measurements. The joint conditional pdf depends on the a priori state pdf at the start of the horizon, which is a prediction pdf based on historical data outside the horizon. The present work investigates nonlinear behavior in large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) of four different polymeric materials using simultaneous conventional rheometric measurements and particle-tracking velocimetric observations. In contrast to most studies in the literature that treat nonlinearity in LAOS in steady state, we emphasize by the present four examples that nonlinearity in LAOS often arise in complex fluids due to time-dependent rearrangement of their microstructures in response to LAOS. Consequently, no correlation is obvious between strain dependence of the steady-state stress response and the time-dependent characteristics of the steady-state response. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) have potential orthopaedic applications. Solgel processing is reported as having advantages over the traditional melt-quench route for synthesizing the glass phase of GICs, including far lower processing temperatures and higher levels of glass purity and homogeneity. This work investigates a novel glass formulation, BT 101 (0.48 SiO2-0.36 ZnO-0.12 CaO-0.04 SrO) produced by both the melt-quench and the solgel route. A method is provided for detecting an analyte indicative of a cancer or a metastatic disease condition, which utilizes the ability of the analyte to induce permeability in a barrier. The method includes providing a biosensor having a barrier which is substantially impermeable to an ion, a permeable membrane which is selective for the ion, and a detector capable of detecting the ion. Cytochrome c and DsRed2 were successfully extracted into reverse micelles by the contacting of an aqueous protein-containing phase with an organic phase. Two important properties that differentiate the extraction profiles of these proteins are pI and size. Cytochrome c is a relatively small, monomeric protein with a pI of 10.6. It was easily extracted into reverse micelles with the anionic surfactant AOT. DsRed2, however, is a large tetramer with a p1 of 6.3. It could not be extracted into AOT, but was extracted with the cationic surfactant CTAB, and with a wider error range than cytochrome c. CD data indicate …

At pH > 6 added filamentous bacteriophage fd is compatible with many of the detergents used to solubilize membrane proteins for solution NMR studies of membrane proteins and, therefore, serves as an alignment media. In combination with strained polyacrylamide gel alignment, Dipolar Waves can be used to directly assess the secondary structure and a λ-map extracts the order tensors for de novo structure calculation of membrane proteins without distance restraints.
