To conclude, the addition of polymers to GPCs resulted in little change to the Tw and Ts, however the compressive strength was found to decrease slightly. ASAP tests revealed that the cements may undergo some structural changes as a result of these additions. In the future perhaps the addition of organic polymers suspended in the liquid phase as part of the cement may yield improved results in this type of study. © 2011 IEEE.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is an extensively studied synthetic polymer that has demonstrated utility as a scaffolding material. A common technique for the fabrication of PLLA scaffolds is electrospinning. The purpose of the present material study was to assess whether an electrospinning process could produce consistent and uniform PLLA scaffold densities. An 8% PLLA solution was made using a 1:1 chloroform: dichloromethane solution and was then run through an electrospinning apparatus. Samples were spun onto 4% PLLA films for 2- or 20-min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for imaging the scaffolds. A nine-measurement data set was used for the assessment …

Severe mechanical trauma of the spinal cord induces a secondary injury response that contributes to post injury cell death and the formation of barriers inhibitory to neuronal regeneration. It is believed that engineered scaffolds produce favorable results when they mimic the properties of the t issue that they are aiming to replicate. Alginate hydrogels have been shown to be beneficial in a number of biomaterial applications and this study shows that alginate hydrogels formed in the presence of an artificial cerebrospinal fluid are able to form hydrogels with mechanical properties similar to those exhibited by neural tissue in the CNS. …

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating problem that often results in paraplegia or quadriplegia. Fibrin hydrogels can be injected into the injured cavity and fill the irregular space. Current techniques require 60 minutes to form a hydrogel. The purpose of this study was to design a fibrin biomaterial that would solidify at a faster rate. By augmenting the existing fabrication procedure, a novel biomaterial was created that formed in 5-7 minutes but lost much of its mechanical stability. Further studies will be performed to improve the mechanical properties while maintaining the faster rate of formation observed here. © 2011 …

Glasses for medical applications are used in particulate form or as a cement component. This work was undertaken to determine structural changes in 0.48SiO2-0.36ZnO-0.12CaO-0.04SrO glass when the SiO2 is substituted with 5 mol% increments of TiO2. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the presence of crystallinity. This occurred after additions of 20 mol% TiO2. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Network connectivity (NC) calculations determined that by increasing the TiO2 content, the Tg and NC reduced (Tg 670 °C to 632 °C, NC 1.83 to -1.14) suggesting that TiO2 acts as …

Labyrinthine Instability In Thin Liquid Films, P. Neogi
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
When a thin liquid film on a solid surface has a thickness corresponding to a particular part the spinodal region of the disjoining pressure versus thickness isotherm, the film breaks down. One of the patterns that emerges on the breakdown has been referred to as wavy instability. It is compared here to the labyrinthine instability seen in magnetic films. the system is modeled following the procedure used in magnetic systems, and the pattern of wavy instability is broken down into a curved thick-thin film in equilibrium with a flat thin-thin film of constant thickness. Minimization of free energy leads to …

Many commercial bone grafts cannot regenerate healthy bone in place of diseased bone. Bioactive glasses have received much attention in this regard due to the ability of their ionic dissolution products to promote cell proliferation, cell differentiation and activate gene expression. Through the incorporation of certain ions, bioactive glasses can become therapeutic for specific pathological situations. Calcium-strontium-sodium-zinc-silicate glass bone grafts have been shown to release therapeutic levels of zinc and strontium, however the in vitro compatibility of these materials is yet to be reported. In this study, the in vitro cytocompatibility of three different calcium-strontium-sodium-zinc-silicate glasses was examined as a …

Integrated constraint-based metabolic and regulatory models can accurately predict cellular growth phenotypes arising from genetic and environmental perturbations. Challenges in constructing such models involve the limited availability of information about transcription factor-gene target interactions and computational methods to quickly refine models based on additional datasets. In this study, we developed an algorithm, GeneForce, to identify incorrect regulatory rules and gene-protein-reaction associations in integrated metabolic and regulatory models. We applied the algorithm to refine integrated models of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, and experimentally validated some of the algorithm's suggested refinements. The adjusted E. coli model showed improved accuracy …

There is disclosed a method for the crystallization of benzphetamine hydrochloride from an organic medium by the steps of removing water from the system to a very low level and then reducing the temperature of the organic medium to provide crystallization of the acid salt. In the event that crystallization does not occur upon lowering the temperature of the medium, it has been discovered that gentle heating of the organic medium results in crystallization of the acid salt. It has also been discovered that higher temperature crystallization has been provided by removal of methamphetamine from the composition. The crystalline benzphetamine …

Tumors frequently contain hypoxic regions that result from a shortage of oxygen due to poorly organized tumor vasculature. Cancer cells in these areas are resistant to radiation- and chemotherapy, limiting the treatment efficacy. Macrophages have inherent hypoxia-targeting ability and hold great advantages for targeted delivery of anticancer therapeutics to cancer cells in hypoxic areas. However, most anticancer drugs cannot be directly loaded into macrophages because of their toxicity. In this work, we designed a novel drug delivery vehicle by hybridizing macrophages with nanoparticles through cell surface modification. Nanoparticles immobilized on the cell surface provide numerous new sites for anticancer drug …

Vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) are now widely used for treating patients in whom the pain due to vertebral compression fractures is severe and has proved to be refractory to conservative treatment. These procedures involve percutaneous delivery of a bolus of an injectable bone cement either directly to the fractured vertebral body, VB (VP) or to a void created in it by an inflatable bone tamp (BKP). Thus, the cement is a vital component of both procedures. In the vast majority of VPs and BKPs, a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is used. This material has many shortcomings, notably …
