Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A proper degradation rate of bone scaffolds ensures optimal mechanical support and effective tissue regeneration. The present study examines the degradation effects of simulated body fluids (SBF) on the compressive and fatigue strength of 3D-printed PLA bone scaffolds. Scaffolds with varying surface-to-volume (S/V) ratios and identical porosity (60 %) were immersed in Hanks' solution for a maximum period of 30 days. Static and dynamic compression tests were performed at different immersion times to assess how S/V ratio influences the degradation process. CT images showed that scaffold pore structure remained interconnected after biodegradation, with no significant change in strut thickness or …

Influence Of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles On The Efficiency Of Oxytetracycline Removal From Wastewater Using Continuous Catalytic Ozonation, Sarmad Al-Anssari, Hassanain A. Hassan, Maha K. Mohsin, Ahmed A. Mohammed

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Antibiotics must be fully eliminated before they are released into the environment. In most cases, conventional wastewater treatment systems are not built to handle polar microcontaminants such as antibiotics. Oxytetracycline (OTC) is one of these antibiotics, an environmental hazard contaminant in aqueous solutions. Therefore, an advanced treatment method is needed for wastewater contaminated with antibiotics. In this study, we employed zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO), and the catalytic ozonation procedure was employed to increase the ozonation efficiency. A continuous experiment was carried out to compare the effectiveness of catalytic and single ozonation in degrading OTC in a continuous reactor. The flow …

H2 is a clean energy source, and is targeted as one of the ways to transition from fossil fuels. However, there are drawbacks in production and storage of hydrogen. To cover the supply, we need H2 from many resources and because of its low density we need materials that can store bulky quantities of H2. Here we investigated the potential of a renewable source (waste wheat straw) to produce and store H2 through pyrolysis and adsorption. The impact of pressure and temperature (500–900 °C, and 1.01–30 bar range) on the selectivity of H2 rich gas production was systematically investigated; and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Passivated Ti alloys typically demonstrate enhanced corrosion resistance due to the formation of passive films. Intriguingly, in comparison to the annealed Ti–6Al–4V, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) produced Ti–6Al–4V exhibits significantly attenuated transpassivation behavior in Hank's solution. This work investigated the electrochemical responses of both samples before and after the transpassivation region to illustrate the underlying mechanism for the phenomenon. In the passivation region, both samples displayed analogous passivation behavior, with the annealed and LPBF-produced Ti–6Al–4V having the current densities of 6.64 × 10−6 and 8.14 × 10−6 A cm−2 at 1 V, respectively. Between 1.5 V …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Salination of solutions of salinity gradient releases large-scale clean and renewable energy, which can be directly and efficiently transformed into electrical energy using ion-selective nanofluidic channel membranes. However, conventional ion-selective membranes are typically either cation- or anion-selective. A pH-switchable system capable of dual cation and anion transport along with salt gradient energy harvesting properties has not been demonstrated in ion-selective membranes. Here, we constructed an amphoteric heterolayer metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane with subnanochannels modified with carboxylic and amino functional groups. The amphoteric MOF-composite membrane, AAO/aUiO-66-(COOH)2/UiO-66-NH2, exhibits pH-tuneable ion conduction and achieves osmotic energy conversion of 7.4 and 5.7 W/m2 …

The Strengthening Mechanisms And Incipient Plasticity Of Additively Manufactured Biomedical Refractory High Entropy Alloys, Changxi Liu, Liqiang Wang, Miao Luo, Kuaishe Wang, Marco De Battista, Ling Zhang, Weijie Lu, Lai Chang Zhang, Di Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Owing to the cellular structure that limits dislocation motion upon stress loading, additively manufactured (AM) refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit an excellent strength-plasticity synergy. This work integrates micro/nano-mechanical experiments with statistical physics modeling to examine dislocation nucleation and slip in AM-fabricated TiNbTaZrMo HEA. Computational results indicated that the activation volume for initial dislocation nucleation is about one atomic volume, facilitating dislocation initiation. Nanoindentation and in-situ micro-pillar compression reveal no significant pop-in events, indicating that the cellular structure impedes dislocation slip and thus prevents plasticity reduction from dislocation slipping near grain boundaries. This work provides a thorough investigation into the interplay …

Conjugated polymers have emerged as a promising option for 3D scaffold construction due to their electrical conductivity, adjustable surface qualities, and ability to transfer bioactive molecules. Moreover, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly emerging class of nanomaterials due to their uniform porosity, excellent …

In this study, a Ti1.5Nb1Ta0.5Zr1Mo0.5 (TNTZM) high-entropy alloy was fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). By integrating 63 sets of parameter trials with machine learning (ML) models, an optimised process window was identified, achieving a density of up to 99.9%. The combination of relatively high laser power and low scanning speed resulted in the formation of a stable cellular structure. Subsequent heat treatments at 700, 850, and 1000°C showed that while small-angle misorientations developed at cell-wall interfaces and medium-entropy (Ti–Zr–Mo) second-phase particles precipitated preferentially in the cell walls, the overall cellular architecture remained intact. Mechanical testing showed that these …

Nanofluids, engineered by dispersing nanoparticles into base fluids, have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the performance of solar collectors. Their superior thermal conductivity and improved heat transfer properties lead to more efficient energy absorption and utilization in solar thermal systems. This study comprehensively investigated and compared the performance of ethylene glycol (EG)-based NH2-MIL-125/TiN (MIL/TiN) composite nanofluids, fabricated by a two-step method, with single-component nanofluids in photothermal utilization. The results illustrated that incorporating NH2-MIL-125 (MIL) nanoparticles enhances the stability of TiN nanofluids in EG. Additionally, the thermal conductivity and optical absorption properties of the hybrid nanofluids exhibited a positive correlation with …
