Effect Of Catalyst Structure On Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane And Propane On Alumina-Supported Vanadia, Morris D. Argyle, Kaidong Chen, Alexis T. Bell, Enrique Iglesia
Faculty Publications
The catalytic properties of Al2O3-supported vanadia with a wide range of VOx surface density (1.4-34.2 V/nm2) and structure were examined for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane and propane. UV-visible and Raman spectra showed that vanadia is dispersed predominately as isolated monovanadate species below ~2.3 V/nm2. As surface densities increase, two-dimensional polyvanadates appear (2.3-7.0 V/nm2) along with increasing amounts of V2O5 crystallites at surface densities above 7.0 V/nm2. The rate constant for oxidative dehydrogenation (k1) and its ratio with alkane and alkene combustion (k2/k1 and k3/k1, respectively) were compared for both alkane reactants as a function of vanadia surface density. Propene …
Slab-Geometry Molecular Dynamics Simulations: Development And Application To Calculation Of Activity Coefficients, Interfacial Electrochemistry, And Ion Channel Transport, Paul S. Crozier
Theses and Dissertations
Methods of slab-geometry molecular dynamics computer simulation were tested, compared, and applied to the prediction of activity coefficients, interfacial electrochemistry characterization, and ion transport through a model biological channel-membrane structure. The charged-sheets, 2-D Ewald, corrected 3-D Ewald, and corrected particle-particle-particle-mesh (P3M) methods were compared for efficiency and applicability to slab-geometry electrolyte systems with discrete water molecules. The P3M method was preferred for long-range force calculation in the problems of interest and was used throughout.
The osmotic molecular dynamics method (OMD) was applied to the prediction of liquid mixture activity coefficients for six binary systems: methanol/n-hexane, n-hexane/n-pentane, methanol/water, chloroform/acetone, n-hexane/chloroform, methanol/ …

Determination Of An Ethane Intermolecular Potential Model For Use In Molecular Simulations From Ab Initio Calculations, Richard L. Rowley, Tapani A. Pakkanen, Yan Yang
Faculty Publications
Counterpoise-corrected, supermolecule, ab initio energies obtained at the MP2/6-311+G(3df, 2pd) level were computed for 22 different relative orientations of two ethane molecules as a function of the separation distance between the molecular centers. These energies were used to regress the parameters in several simple, analytical, interatomic or site-site models that can be used for implementation in molecular simulations. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the inter molecular potential surface is insensitive to the C-C interactions and that the parameters in the C-C model are coupled and unobtainable from the dimer energies. Representation of the potential surface can be made in terms of …

The mineral carbonation, a process of converting CO2 into stable minerals (mineralization), has been studied extensively to capture and store CO2. However, most of the mineral carbonation studies have been largely investigated at lab scale. Preliminary and pilot scale studies for accelerated mineral carbonation (AMC) were conducted at one of the largest coal-fired power plants (2120 MW) in the USA by reacting flue gas with fly ash particles in a fluidized bed reactor. In the preliminary experiments, flue gas CO2 and SO2 concentrations decreased from 13.0 to 9.6% and from 107.8 to 15.1 ppmv, respectively during the first 2 min. …

The high spectral intensity of X-rays produced by the undulator at the Basic Energy Sciences Synchrotron Radiation Center of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source has allowed us to perform small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of the initial distribution of soot particles formed by various fuels. SAXS provides an in situ probe of the morphology of soot in the region between 1 and 100 nm and complements the ex situ technique of electron microscopy. The basic aspects of SAXS and its potential are illustrated with measurement on a laminar flame of acetylene in air. The more complex fuel toluene has been studied …

Simulation Of Coal Pyrolysis In Plasma Jet By Cpd Model, Yajun Tian, Kechang Xie, Suyu Zhu, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Reaction of coal in a plasma jet is complex and extremely rapid, and acetylene and carbon monoxide are the main products in the pyrolysis gas. Coal pyrolysis is assumed as the first step reaction when coal is injected into hot plasma jet with initial average temperature of 3700 K. Chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) is employed first to simulate this procedure in mechanism. The calculation results indicate coal pyrolysis rate in plasma jet is very fast and the retention time of coal staying in reactor is only several milliseconds. Comparing the calculation with experiment result, it was concluded that the CPD …
Transformations Of Coal-Derived Soot At Elevated Temperature, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jim Rigby, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb
Transformations Of Coal-Derived Soot At Elevated Temperature, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jim Rigby, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb
Faculty Publications
Coal pyrolysis experiments were performed in the post-flame region of a CH4/H2/air flat-flame burner operating under fuel-rich conditions, where the temperature and gas compositions were similar to those found in the near-burner region of an industrial pulverized coal-fired furnace. Volatiles released from the coal particles formed a cloud of soot particles surrounding a centrally fed coal/char particle stream. Soot samples were collected from the cloud at different residence times using a water-cooled, nitrogen-quenched probe. The soot samples were then analyzed for their elemental compositions of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and (by difference) oxygen plus inorganic matter. …

13-C Nmr Analysis Of Soot Produced From Model Compounds And A Coal, Mark S. Solum, Adel F. Sarofim, Ronald J. Pugmire, Thomas H. Fletcher, Haifeng Zhang
Faculty Publications
Soot samples, including the associated organics, produced from an Illinois No. 6 coal (five samples) and two model compounds, biphenyl (three samples) and pyrene (two samples), have been studied by 13C NMR methods. The coal soot data served as a guide to selection of the temperature range that would be most fruitful for investigation of the evolution of aerosols composed of soot and tars that are generated from model compounds. The evolution of the different materials in the gas phase followed different paths. The coal derived soots exhibited loss of aliphatic and oxygen functional groups prior to significant growth …
Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher
Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A CO/H2/O2/N2 flame was operated under fuel-rich conditions in a flat flame reactor to provide a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment to study secondary reactions of coal volatiles. The distributions of fuel nitrogen in the devolatilization products of four coals, ranging from high volatile bituminous to lignite, were obtained at gas temperatures ranging from 1159 to 1858 K. It was found that the initial nitrogen released was contained almost exclusively in the tar for all coals. Release of nitrogen from the char as light gases started at a later stage than tar nitrogen release. During secondary reactions, …

Molecular Dynamics Calculations Of The Electrochemical Properties Of Electrolyte Systems Between Charged Electrodes, Richard L. Rowley, Paul S. Crozier, Douglas Henderson
Faculty Publications
We investigate the interfacial electrochemical properties of an aqueous electrolyte solution with discrete water molecules in slab geometry between charged atomistic electrodes. Long-range intermolecular Coulombic interactions are calculated using the particle particle particle mesh method with a modification to account for the slab geometry. Density distribution profiles and potential drops across the double layer are given for 0, 0.25, and 1 M aqueous electrolyte solutions each electrode surface charges. Results are compared qualitatively with experimental x-ray scattering findings, other computer simulation results, and traditional electrochemistry theory. The interfacial fluid structure characteristics are generally in good qualitative agreement with the conclusions …

Comparison Of Charged Sheets And Corrected 3-D Ewald Calculations Of Long-Range Forces In Slab Geometry Electrolyte Systems With Solvent Molecules, Richard L. Rowley, Paul S. Crozier, Eckhard Spoht, Douglas Henderson
Faculty Publications
Two methods of calculating long-range intermolecular potentials are compared for an approximately 3 M aqueous electrolyte solution confined between two charged surfaces. We investigate the ionic density profiles using the charged-sheets method and the corrected three-dimensional (3D) Ewald method at two different system sizes and also compare the Coulomb forces directly. The corrected 3D Ewald method is recommended for the calculation of long-range potentials in systems of this nature because it is less system size dependent than the charged sheets method and the resultant forces are more consistent with periodic boundaries. However, the charged-sheets method for estimating long-range potentials in …

The Character Of Ash Deposits And The Thermal Performance Of Furnaces, T. F. Wall, S. P. Bhattacharya, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091, G. Richards, J. N. Harb
Faculty Publications
The character of fireside ash deposits depend on the processes by which deposits are formed and subsequent reactions within the deposit and with furnace gases. The properties influencing furnace heat transfer, absorptivity for radiative transfer and thermal conductivity for conductive transfer are shown from many measurements to depend on this character. Illustrative trends in these properties as deposits mature and grow are presented together with their effect on furnace exit temperature and efficiency. The reflective character of initial deposits from particular coals is then considered with predictions and measurements of the spectral character of such deposits, during the first three …

Solid-State 13c Nmr Characterization Of Matched Tars And Chars From Rapid Coal Devolatilization, Steven T. Perry, Eric M. Hambly, Thomas H. Fletcher, Mark S. Solum, Ronald J. Pugmire
Faculty Publications
Matched tar/char sets were prepared by pyrolysis of a lignite and a bituminous coal in two entrained flow reactors at temperatures between 900 K and 1650 K and heating rates of 104–105 K/s. Detailed chemical structural characterization of these tars and chars was performed using elemental analysis and solid-state 13C NMR. This is the first set of detailed solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data on coal tar samples. The average aromatic cluster sizes of the primary tars from these experiments are quite similar to those of their parent coals, confirming an assumption often made …

Modeling High Pressure Char Oxidation Using Langmuir Kinetics With An Effectiveness Factor, Jianhui Hong, William C. Hecker, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
The global nth order rate equation has been criticized for lack of theoretical basis and has been shown to be inadequate for modeling char oxidation rates as a function of total gas pressure. The simple Langmuir rate equation is believed to have more potential for modeling high pressure char oxidation. The intrinsic Langmuir rate equation is applied to graphite flake oxidation data and agrees well with reaction rates at three temperatures over the entire range of oxygen pressure (1–64 atm). It also explains the change of reaction order with temperature. In this work, the intrinsic Langmuir rate equation is combined …

Modeling Nitrogen Evolution During Coal Pyrolysis Based On A Global Free-Radical Mechanism, Steven T. Perry, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A global free-radical mechanism and an associated rate equation for the evolution of light gas nitrogen during coal devolatilization are presented. The light gas nitrogen rate equation was used to modify an existing nitrogen model so that only a network devolatilization model and coal-specific chemical structural input data are required to adequately predict light gas nitrogen release at a variety of pyrolysis conditions. Model predictions show good agreement with nitrogen release data from pyrolysis of coals of rank from lignite to low volatile bituminous at heating rates from 0.5 to 105 K/s, temperatures as high as 2300 K, and …

Improving The Accuracy Of Predicting Effectiveness Factors For Mth Order And Langmuir Rate Equations In Spherical Coordinates, Jianhui Hong, William C. Hecker, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Char oxidation is often modeled using an mth order intrinsic reaction rate in conjunction with an effectiveness factor to account for intraparticle diffusion of gas species. This approach involves the use of a general modulus (MT) and using the first-order curve of effectiveness factor vs MT. This method was originally referred to as the general asymptotic solution. It has been suggested that a simple Langmuir rate equation is more suitable for modeling the effects of pressure on char reactivity. Therefore, several methods of developing general moduli for the Langmuir rate expression are shown. The general asymptotic …

Measurement Of Soot And Char In Pulverized Coal Fly Ash, John M. Veranth, Thomas H. Fletcher, David W. Pershing, Adel F. Sarofim
Faculty Publications
The unburned carbon in the fly ash produced by low-NOx pulverized coal combustion has been shown by electron microscopy to be a mixture of porous coal char particles and aggregates of submicron particles, which are thought to be soot. The carbon is bimodally distributed with large soot aggregates mixed with the char in the particles larger than 10 microns and dispersed soot found with the submicron particles. A method for determining the mass of soot and char by liquid-suspension gravity separation was used with both laboratory-scale and power plant fly ash samples. For low-NOx, staged, pilot-scale combustion of bituminous coal …
The Use Of Two Mixture Fractions To Treat Coal Combustion Products In Turbulent Pulverized-Coal Flames, Daniel V. Flores, Thomas H. Fletcher
The Use Of Two Mixture Fractions To Treat Coal Combustion Products In Turbulent Pulverized-Coal Flames, Daniel V. Flores, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Previous coal combustion models using assumed-shape PDF's to treat turbulence-chemistry interactions have used only one progress variable to treat products from coal reactions. This assumes that the products of all coal reactions have the same composition. However. the composition of the combustion products of coal particles is known to vary with burnout, especially between devclatilization and char oxidation. In this work, two progress variables were implemented which distinguish between the products of devolatilization and those of char oxidation. This new approach requires as input the specified volatile content and elemental release during devolatilization. The values for these parameters were estimated …

Simulation And Density Functional Study Of A Simple Membrane Separating Two Restricted Primitive Model Electrolytes, Richard L. Rowley, Dezso Boda, Douglas Henderson, Stefan Sokolowski
Faculty Publications
A simple membrane, supporting charge densities on its inner and outer surfaces, is considered. In addition to the electrostatic potential, the membrane interacts with the surrounding fluid by a short range van der Waals-like potential. The fluid beyond the outer surface is a three-component restricted primitive electrolyte consisting of two cations and one anion. The membrane is impermeable to one of the cations so that the fluid in the membrane and beyond the inner surface is a two-component restricted primitive electrolyte. We use Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory to study the density profiles of the electrolyte and the …

Biofilm infections are a common complication of prosthetic devices in humans. Previous in vitro research has determined that low-frequency ultrasound combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics is an effective method of killing biofilms. We report the development of an in vivo model to determine if ultrasound enhances antibiotic action. Two 24-h-old Escherichia coli (ATCC 10798) biofilms grown on polyethylene disks were implanted subcutaneously on the backs of New Zealand White female rabbits, one on each side of the spine. Low-frequency (28.48-kHz) and low-power-density (100- and 300-mW/cm2) continuous ultrasound treatment was applied for 24 h with and without systemic administration of gentamicin. The …

This paper highlights some of the major findings of the Alkali Deposits Investigation, a collaborative effort to understand the causes of unmanageable ash deposits in biomass-fired electric power boilers. A group of interested industrial institutions and the US DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office's Biomass Power Program through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory jointly sponsored the project. The industries contributed both funding and, in most cases, use of facilities to the project and included Mendota Biomass Power and Woodland Biomass Power (both associated with Thermo Electron Energy Systems), CMS Generation Operating (formerly Hydra-Co Operations), Wheelabrator, Shasta and Hudson Energy, …

Properties of biomass relevant to combustion are briefly reviewed. The compositions of biomass among fuel types are variable, especially with respect to inorganic constituents important to the critical problems of fouling and slagging. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, in combination with other fuel elements such as silica and sulfur, and facilitated by the presence of chlorine, are responsible for many undesirable reactions in combustion furnaces and power boilers. Reductions in the concentrations of alkali metals and chlorine, created by leaching the elements from the fuel with water, yield remarkable improvements in ash fusion temperatures and confirm much of what is …

Determination Of A Methane Intermolecular Potential Model For Use In Molecular Simulations From Ab Initio Calculations, Richard L. Rowley, Tapani A. Pakkanen
Faculty Publications
The possibility of obtaining an accurate site-site potential model suitable for use in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of methane from ab initio calculations has been explored. Counterpoise-corrected (CPC), supermolecule, ab initio energies at the MP2/6-311 + G(2df,2pd) level were computed for eleven relative orientations of two methane molecules as a function of C-C separation distance. C-C, C-H, and H-H interaction parameters in a pairwise-additive, site-site potential model for rigid methane molecules were regressed from the ab initio energies, and the resultant model accurately reproduced the ab initio energies. The model suggests that C-H attractions are dominant in weakly binding the …

13C NMR spectroscopy has been shown to be an important tool in the characterization of coal structure. Important quantitative information about the carbon skeletal structure is obtained through 13C NMR spectral analysis of coal. Solid-state 13C NMR analysis techniques have progressed beyond the mere determination of aromaticity and can now describe features such as the number of aromatic carbons per cluster and the number of attachments per aromatic cluster. These 13C NMR data have been used to better understand the complicated structure of coal, to compare structural differences in coal, tar, and char, and to model …

Modeling Nitrogen Release During Devolatilization On The Basis Of Chemical Structure Of Coal, Dominic Genetti, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A model that predicts the amount and distribution between tar and light gas of nitrogen released during devolatilization has been developed and incorporated into the chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model. This work represents the first volatile nitrogen release model developed on the basis of 13C NMR measurements of coal structure. This work also represents the first volatile nitrogen release model evaluated by comparing model predictions with chemical structural features of the char (determined by 13C NMR spectral analyses). The model is limited to nitrogen release during primary pyrolysis, and assumes that all light-gas nitrogen is HCN. Model predictions …
Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091
Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091
Faculty Publications
Boiler ash deposits generated during combustion of coal, biomass, black liquor, and energetic materials affect both the net plant efficiency and operating strategy of essentially all boilers. Such deposits decrease convective and radiative heat exchange with boiler heat transfer surfaces. In many cases, even a small amount of ash on a surface decreases local heat transfer rates by factors of three or more. Apart from their impact on heat transfer, ash deposits in boilers represent potential operational problems and boiler maintenance issues, including plugging, tube wastage (erosion and corrosion), and structural damage. This report relates the chemistry and microstructural properties …

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on model fluids representing eicosane isomers in order to investigate the effect of branching and side chain position on fluid rheology. A heterogeneous, united-atom model with 20 Lennard-Jones interaction sites located at carbon centers was used to model the fluids. Vibrations and bond rotations were frozen, but torsional rotation was included. It was found that viscosity increases significantly from the n-alkane structure to a branch on carbon 2, but the movement of the branch along the carbon backbone has a smaller increasing than decreasing effect. The size of the group in a branched …

This study has identified useful reduced kinetic schemes that can be used in comprehensive multi-dimensional gas-turbine combustor models. Reduced mechanisms lessen computational cost and possess the capability to accurately predict the overall flame structure, including gas temperatures and key intermediate species such as CH4, CO and NOx. In this study, four-new global mechanisms with 5, 6, 7, and 9 steps based on the full GRI 2.11 mechanism, were developed and evaluated for their potential to model natural-gas chemistry (including NOx chemistry) in gas turbine combustors. These new reduced mechanisms were optimized to model the high …

Modeling Soot Derived From Pulverized Coal, Alexander L. Brown, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A semiempirical model has been developed for predicting coal-derived soot. The main feature of the model is a transport equation for soot mass fraction. Tar prediction options include either an empirical or a transport equation approach, which directly impacts the source term for soot formation. Also, the number of soot particles per unit mass of gas may be calculated using either a transport equation or an assumed average. Kinetics are based on Arrhenius rates taken from published measurements. Radiative properties are calculated as a function of averaged optical constants, predicted gas temperatures, predicted gas densities, and the soot mass fractions. …
