Computational Methods For Identification Of Molecular Signatures, Weijun Yi

This work develops computational methods for identifying molecular signatures from high-throughput genomic data and for modeling long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) sub-cellular localization. The response of multiple myeloma to CB-6644, a selective RUVBL1/2 complex inhibitor with potential anti-tumor activity, is analyzed to identify drug-responsive pathways and molecular signatures. Conventional gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) often excludes low-expression genes. Here, phenotype comparison is reformulated as a supervised machine learning problem: genes most informative for discrimination are first selected using a machine learning approach, and GSEA is then applied to these machine-learning derived gene sets. Breast density screenings are an accepted means to determine a patient's predisposed risk of breast cancer development. Although the direct correlation is not fully understood, breast cancer risk increases with higher levels of mammographic breast density. Radiologists visually assess a patient's breast density using mammogram images and assign a density score based on four breast density categories outlined by the Breast Imaging and Reporting Data Systems (BI-RADS). There have been efforts to develop automated tools that assist radiologists with increasing workloads and to help reduce the intra- and inter-rater variability between radiologists. Pneumonia Radiograph Diagnosis Utilizing Deep Learning Network, Wesley O'Quinn

Pneumonia is a life-threatening respiratory disease caused by bacterial infection. The goal of this study is to develop an algorithm using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to detect visual signals for pneumonia in medical images and make a diagnosis. Although Pneumonia is prevalent, detection and diagnosis are challenging. The deep learning network AlexNet was utilized through transfer learning. A dataset consisting of 11,318 images was used for training, and a preliminary diagnosis accuracy of 72% was achieved.
