Biomedical Engineering
The purpose of this document was to present a senior design project from Cal Poly sponsored by Matt Robinson at the Hanger Clinic in San Luis Obispo to provide biofeedback for users of upper limb protheses. This project focuses on individuals with trans-radial upper limb amputations, including patients with congenital limb deficiencies who use trans-radial prosthesis, who receive very little or no sensory feedback from their prosthetic device. This sensory feedback device was intended to be used as a training tool with a myo-electric hand-like upper limb prosthesis in a clinical setting. This document provides an overview of the different …

Biostride - Prosthetic Charging Stand, Abigael Howard, Brett Matich, Allie Mcauliffe, Liam Harwood
Biomedical Engineering
This Final Report outlines the development of a lower limb prosthetic docking and charging station to address a critical need for individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputations who use microprocessor-controlled prosthetics. This project is focused on designing and producing a secure, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing stand to store and charge prosthetic limbs overnight, targeting the lack of commercially available, functional prosthetic storage. The absence of a functional storage solution points to a failure in meaningfully addressing the human needs of prosthetics users, exacerbating user frustration through the perpetuation of issues including prosthetics falling over into inaccessible positions, and tripping hazards due …

Force Mapping Wand For Individuals With Upper-Limb Amputations, Max Bosse, Cole Capitani, Eddie Grassini
Biomedical Engineering
Technology relating to upper-limb amputations has seen many advances in recent years, especially in terms of function and aesthetic appeal. Although these improvements exist, comfort is often a primary concern among prosthetic users and can lead to prosthetic abandonment [1]. Without a standardized method of measuring force concentrations in patients, high rates of discomfort and potential tissue damage remain. The goal of this project is to create a force mapping system for upper-limb amputees to help minimize discomfort in socket fit during the fitting process using real-time data and software to view force concentrations. To accomplish this goal, background research …
Hands-Free Balance Protocol And Development Of An Iphone App For Self-Assessment, Jacob Matties
Hands-Free Balance Protocol And Development Of An Iphone App For Self-Assessment, Jacob Matties
Master's Theses
For many clinical populations, the measurement of balance is a critical task. Previous studies have agreed that smartphone IMUs provide a valid measure of balance that can be significantly correlated with force plate measurements and is sensitive enough to distinguish between various balance poses, but many balance assessment protocols require uncommon equipment or the use of hands during assessment. These limit accessibility of balance assessment. To eliminate the need for hands or any additional equipment, this study assessed the use of a smartphone recording the root mean square of 3D acceleration magnitude. The goal of the study was to determine …

Development Of A Light-Based Platform To Assess Cervical Mucus Barrier Function And Physical Mucus Properties, Elizabeth J. Buzbee
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, yet current clinical tools for predicting its risk lack specificity and reliability. Cervical mucus plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy by forming a barrier that protects the uterus against infection. This study investigates the use of laser speckle rheology as a noninvasive technique to assess cervical mucus biomechanics. Synthetic cervical mucus was fabricated at varying hydration levels and tested using a conventional rheometer that confirmed that the mechanical properties of the synthetic mucus samples were representative of physiological cervical mucus. These results were compared to the complex …

Opmed Seal: Engineering A Rapid-Response Biodegradable Device For Hemorrhage Control And Infection Prevention In Abdominal Trauma, Paula M. Cabrera, Wesley Stephen Murphy
Honors Theses
Abdominal gunshot wounds are amongst the deadliest injuries encountered in combat and remote emergency settings. For military medics and first responders, the challenge lies in controlling internal bleeding and preventing infection before patients can reach surgical care-often within a narrow window of time known as the “golden hour”. Currently available field treatments are either too slow, not designed for internal wounds, or fail to provide antimicrobial protection. To address this gap, our team developed OpMed Seal: a compact, dual-syringe delivery system that deploys a biodegradable, antibiotic-infused hydrogel directly into abdominal injuries. The system is designed for rapid hemorrhage control, localized …

Design And Development Of A Stethoscope Attachment For Instant Heart Murmur Detection, Caitlin K. Cherwin, Dillon Desai
Honors Theses
Heart murmurs are critical indicators of potential cardiovascular conditions yet their detection can often go unnoticed due limitations in equipment and is dependent on clinician experience. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death worldwide, therefore, early detection of heart murmurs play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes. Many established methods of detection are expensive and often unreliable allowing there to be room for a device which is more cost and result effective. This paper presents the development of a device that attaches onto a regular stethoscope and analyzes auscultatory sounds to diagnose the possibility of a present murmur. …
Using Deep Learning And Two-Photon Excitation Fluorescence Microscopy To Predict Breast Cancer Recurrence And Response To Chemotherapy, Nicholas Powell
Using Deep Learning And Two-Photon Excitation Fluorescence Microscopy To Predict Breast Cancer Recurrence And Response To Chemotherapy, Nicholas Powell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Accurate prediction of breast cancer recurrence plays a critical role in guiding treatment decisions, particularly regarding the use of systemic therapy for patients. While genomic assays such as the Oncotype DX Recurrence Score offer valuable prognostic information, they are limited in accessibility and application. The work presented in this thesis explores an imaging-based approach for the prediction of breast cancer recurrence that combines multiphoton microscopy (MPM) with deep learning to classify individual breast cancer biopsy samples by risk of recurrence. Genomic differences in tumors with different recurrence potentials may translate to distinct optical and structural information that can be captured …
Efficacy Of Mitophagy Inhibition As A Potentiating Agent For Conventional Chemotherapy, Morghan Relich, Shelby Bess
Efficacy Of Mitophagy Inhibition As A Potentiating Agent For Conventional Chemotherapy, Morghan Relich, Shelby Bess
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cancer is a result of uncontrolled growth and reproduction of cells. Damaged or abnormal cells grow and multiply when they should not and in turn the cells continue to proliferate and metastasize. Malignant cells rely on functional mitochondria for proliferation, metastasis, and survival. These mitochondria maintain a functional mitochondrial network through a quality control mechanism called mitophagy. Mitophagy is a conserved intracellular process to maintain quality control and remove damaged mitochondria.
Previous research has been done to examine the effects of mitophagy in tumor cells, as well as the effects of mitophagy inhibition. One focus of current research has been …

Post-operative orthopedic surgical site infections (SSIs), specifically those caused by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), present a significant clinical challenge due to delayed detection, increased morbidity, and current rising healthcare costs. Early detection of infection remains limited due to the current methods of diagnosis, which consist of observation of the surgical site and laboratory infrastructure for conformation of infection. To combat these issues, my team and I have designed and evaluated a minimally invasive microneedle diagnostic patch that continuously monitors for the presence of MRSA-associated biomarker PBP2a in interstitial fluids around surgical site incisions. Upon antigen detection, a colorimetric response …
Impact Of Shear Flow On Marine Biofilms Using Hyperspectral Imaging, Shantanu Mahesh Kore
Impact Of Shear Flow On Marine Biofilms Using Hyperspectral Imaging, Shantanu Mahesh Kore
All Theses
Various microbial communities in marine biofilms cause biofouling on submerged surfaces, posing challenges to marine industries. Despite their ecological and economic importance, biofilms' biomechanical and biochemical responses to hydrodynamic shear stress are insufficiently understood, particularly in dynamic flow conditions. To fill this gap, our study uses an innovative fiber-optic hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system and a supercontinuum laser source to examine marine biofilms' structure, composition, and detachment behavior at different shear stress levels.
To detect spectral and spatial heterogeneity in live biofilms without labeling, we created a custom imaging pipeline that captures reflectance spectra in the 600-850 nm range, targeting microbial …

Applying Residence Time Distribution Theory To Coronary Thermodilution Curves., Jacob Michael Miller
Applying Residence Time Distribution Theory To Coronary Thermodilution Curves., Jacob Michael Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide and coronary microvascular dysfunction is one cardiovascular disease which is particularly challenging to diagnose and treat. Coronary thermodilution is a widely used, invasive procedure to evaluate microvascular function by generating physiological indices such as coronary flow reserve and the index of microvascular resistance. Although commonly cited as an indicator dilution method in the cardiovascular literature, current coronary thermodilution techniques lack rigorous application of the accompanying mathematical framework, thereby leaving potentially valuable diagnostic information unexploited. This study bridges that gap by demonstrating the equivalence between indicator-dilution theory and residence time distribution theory …

Development Of Translational Microscale Systems To Interrogate How Biophysical And Biochemical Cues Alter The Phenotype Of Hormone Positive Breast Cancer, Braulio Ortega Quesada
All Dissertations
Cancer is a complicated disease and one in every three diagnoses are women with breast cancer. Recent research shows that the progression of cancer depends strongly on interactions with other non-cancerous cells and non-cellular components. Metastasis, the spread of cancer to other parts of the body, is a key step in cancer progression and makes treatment harder, leading to poor response to treatments culminating in death in ~90% of patients. This dissertation focused on creating a series of microdevices as novel pre-clinical models of breast cancer. Two different devices were fabricated to (1) study how exposing cancer cells to the …

Evervital Patch: The Design And Development Of A Continuous Cardiac Monitoring Device For Post-Operative, In-Hospital Patients, Abigail Moeller, Jonathan Seid
Honors Theses
In the United States, due to the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease, over 900,000 cardiac surgeries are performed annually, with projections exceeding 1.3 million by 2029. Many post-surgical patients require continuous in-hospital cardiac monitoring, which is typically conducted using electrocardiograms (EKGs). However, traditional EKG systems such as bedside cardiac monitors and cardiac telemetry monitors rely on wired leads that can easily tangle, degrade signal quality, and require frequent readjustments or replacements due to wire breakage, and for the patient, this can cause discomfort from prolonged use. To overcome these challenges, our company, CardioSync, aims to develop a wireless cardiac monitoring …

Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The demands of emerging technologies, such as soft robotics, stretchable electronics, and next generation biomedical implants, has led to the development of diverse polymeric and hybrid organic/inorganic materials specifically tuned to meet these challenges. These materials typically have low Young’s moduli and are inert with high chemical stability. However, this has led to materials that are static in nature, lacking any meaningful way of responding to changes in their environment and adapting to these changes. This has driven a shift towards the design, manufacturing, and characterization of various stimuli responsive surfaces, relying on precise control of surface chemical coatings and …

Accurately diagnosing appendicitis remains a significant challenge in emergency medicine due to its varied clinical presentation and overlap with other abdominal conditions. Existing diagnostic models often rely on unimodal data, such as computed tomography (CT) images or clinical notes, limiting their ability to capture the full complexity of patient information. This study proposes a novel multimodal framework, a Unified Adaptive Cross-Attention Multimodal Framework (u-ACM), that integrates CT images and clinical notes using hybrid fusion strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy for appendicitis. The u-ACM leverages adaptive contextual filtering to dynamically remove irrelevant features, crossattention mechanisms to align features between modalities, and …
