Hand Movement Analysis For Surgical Suturing Skill Assessment, Amir Mehdi Shayan
Hand Movement Analysis For Surgical Suturing Skill Assessment, Amir Mehdi Shayan

To enhance patient safety, surgical education is increasingly incorporating simulation for formative skills assessment and training. However, many standardized assessment tools rely on human raters for performance assessment, which is resource-intensive and subjective. Simulators that provide automated and objective metrics from sensor data can address this limitation. This thesis presents an instrumented bench suturing simulator, patterned after the Clock Face (CF) radial suturing model from the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery (FVS), for automated and objective assessment of open suturing skills by particularly focusing on biomechanical analysis of hand movements. For this research, 97 participants (35 attending surgeons and fellows, 32 …
Development Of Advanced Simulator-Based Metrics For Suturing Skills Assessment And Feedback, Simar Singh
Development Of Advanced Simulator-Based Metrics For Suturing Skills Assessment And Feedback, Simar Singh
All Dissertations
Vascular surgery demands highly skilled suturing to manipulate and connect delicate vasculature. However, inadequate methods for open suturing skills training necessitate efficient and objective methods to develop skills. To address this need, medical training simulators for objective surgical skills training are gaining popularity for their formative assessment.
This research details the development of a system to classify suturing performance and provide feedback on a suturing skills measurement and feedback platform (called the SutureCoach). The SutureCoach simulator offers a comprehensive assessment of skill through sensors measuring needle driver motions, membrane forces and torques, subcutaneous suture needle movement, and hand motions. We …

The use of adult zebrafish, Danio rerio, as a model for human neurodegenerative diseases has proven valuable in pharmaceutical development and genetic disease research due to their high genetic homology to humans, cost-effective husbandry, and quick life cycle breeding times. Despite their promise, most zebrafish research has focused on embryonic stage organisms, primarily due to the ease of direct handling protocols and rapid progression through developmental stages. Recognizing the limitations of early-stage organisms in modeling adult diseases, recent efforts have shifted the applicability of zebrafish models, particularly for Parkinson's Disease, due to the nature of the disease impacting patients 55 …
Fabrication Of Hydrogel Microparticles For Acute Treatment Of Penetrating Brain Injuries, Isabell Foulger
Fabrication Of Hydrogel Microparticles For Acute Treatment Of Penetrating Brain Injuries, Isabell Foulger
All Theses
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a type of acquired head trauma that results from an external force to the head. The development and severity of the secondary injury increases the risk of neurodegeneration and reduced cognitive recovery. Glucocorticoids are potent antiinflammatory therapeutics that have been investigated for potential treatment of TBIs, strokes, and other neuroinflammatory pathologies. However, their clinical application has been limited due to their ability to induce a variety of side effects, including adrenal suppression, edema, and reduced plasticity of the hippocampus. The use of a localized drug delivery system would overcome these systemic concerns. In previous studies, …
