This thesis involves the development of a computerized airline strategy simulation, decision support system to assist airline management training. The simulation program is designed to be run under the Microsoft Windows™ environment on any IBM - compatible computer. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop a useful program to be helpful in practicing decision making skills in a group setting, understanding the significance of strategic management, forecasting demand in today's turbulent airline industry, learning stockholders' roles in a business, and practicing skills required in airline operations management.

With air travel projected to increase into the year 2000, Airbus Industrie, Boeing Corporation and McDonnell Douglas are making plans or are in the process of building large transports. Airbus has built the A340/A330 and is planning the now named A3XX, a 600 plus seater. Boeing is currently flying the 747-400 which holds up to 570 passengers. The proposed research seeks to identify the factors contributing to job retention and job attrition in terms of why an airport security checkpoint screener would try or want to stay on the job or leave the job. By identifying the causes of employee satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and by understanding the integral components of employee turnover can develop appropriate interventions that curb existing retention problems (exceeding 70% annually in most facilities). This thesis evaluates the Canada - Florida commercial air passenger market and explains fluctuations in the demand for air passenger service based on an econometric modeling process. Canada - Florida commercial air passenger traffic is segmented into those passengers flying on scheduled air services and those travelling on chartered air services. Two separate multiple regression equations are constructed to address the two segments of the Canada - Florida market. Both equations are formulated utilizing the same three independent variables. Through a cooperative effort between NASA, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, Douglas Aircraft Company, GE Aircraft Engines, and Pratt & Whitney, technology for a new-generation supersonic transport aircraft is being developed. To determine if air travelers will choose this aircraft, the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT), as their mode of air transportation on transpacific routes, a self-developed questionnaire was sent to randomly selected travel agents in the Los Angeles, California area. The questionnaire examined criteria that passengers use to select transpacific flights, including fare, schedule, flight time length, and comfort. This thesis investigates whether a corporate alliance between international air carriers is beneficial, considering the changes in the global air transport system. Dividing the research method into three phases, the author first lists and identifies the recent changes in world air transport trends. Then, the author defines the different types of alliances and studies the advantages and disadvantages of these corporate alliances. Finally, a multiple regression analysis is performed using the KLM/Northwest Airlines alliance as a case analysis.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are any significant decreases in the safety and effectiveness of pilots by age 60. The data for this study came from records of general aviation accidents (i.e., for private pilots, commercial pilots, and air transport pilots), and airline accidents (Part 121). These accident data were acquired from many specialized aviation data banks; these include: NTSB, AOPA, FAA, and the COMSIS Research Corporation. As a result of expansion and acquisition, USAir has experienced major growth in flight operations. In an effort to accommodate this expansion, a major construction project, called the Midfield Terminal project, is underway at USAir's major hub, Greater Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). The Midfield Terminal will result in a 60 percent increase in gate capacity for USAir and lower operating costs due to its location. However, increased gates infer increased flight frequencies. This study deals with the development of scheduled passenger traffic between the USA and selected countries in the ICAO Asia/Pacific region from 1977 to 1987. Among the significant trends are the growth in scheduled passenger traffic volume and the increase in both the percentage share of US citizens and foreign flag carriers. This study focuses on United Airlines' acquisition of Pan Am's Pacific Division in 1985. An analysis of selected Pan Am transpacific services in terms of market share and quality of service before 1985 shows a general declining trend.
