Danger In The Training Gap, William Korner
Danger In The Training Gap, William Korner
Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference
Loss of Control in flight has accounted for the largest share of worldwide passenger deaths over the past ten years. Not Controlled Flight into Terrain, not equipment failure or malfunction, not even weather – but Loss of Control, in flight.
And there is a disturbing caveat to this fact: In every one of those accidents over the past ten years where there was a large loss of life – highly trained and legally qualified pilots were at the controls of the aircraft involved. Meaning these accidents should have been preventable – yet they were not, because the pilots in command …
Jolly Green Mission Brief, Rich Blackwell
Jolly Green Mission Brief, Rich Blackwell
ERAU Prescott Aviation History Program
The HH-3E helicopter was fondly known as the “Jolly Green”, for its size and color. Learn what it was like to fly it on rescue missions in Vietnam during 1967-1968. Rich was a Rescue Combat Crew Commander in Da Nang who flew more than 400 combat hours in the rescue of downed aircrews and the medevac of wounded Marines. They were dangerous missions but many people owe their lives to these Jolly Greens!

Risk Perception In Aviation Students: Weather Matters, Ric Ferraro Phd, Darci Vandyke, Mary Zander, Krista Anderson, Bethany Kuehlen
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Sixty-three aviation major students and 71 non-aviation major students participated in an experiment concerning aviation experience and risk perception (Risk Perception Scale, RPS; Hunter, 2002). Non-aviation students rated three of the RPS risk scenarios (P2Fly, P2Life, P2 Base) as having higher perceived risk than aviation students with the exception of the weather risk scenarios (P2WX). Aviation students perceived the P2WX scenarios to be significantly more risky. These results have implications for how future pilots perceive risk.

Strain-balanced InAs/InAsSb superlattices offer access to the mid- to long-wavelength infrared region with what is essentially a ternary material system at the GaSb lattice constant. The absorption coefficients of InAs/InAsSb superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100)-oriented GaSb substrates are measured at room temperature over the 30 to 800 meV photon energy range using spectroscopic ellipsometry, and the miniband structure of each superlattice is calculated using a Kronig-Penney model. The InAs/InAsSb conduction band offset is used as a fitting parameter to align the calculated superlattice ground state transition energy to the measured absorption onset at room temperature and to …
Topological Risk Mapping Of Runway Overruns: A Probabilistic Approach, Paolo Trucco, Massimiliano Ambroggi, Maria Chiara Leva
Topological Risk Mapping Of Runway Overruns: A Probabilistic Approach, Paolo Trucco, Massimiliano Ambroggi, Maria Chiara Leva
Articles
The paper presents a topological risk mapping for aircraft overruns. The proposed procedure is based on the study published in 2008 by Hall et al. (Analysis of aircraft overruns and undershoots for runway safety areas. Airport Cooperative Research Program. Washington, DC: Transportation Research Board; 2008). In that study the authors performed an analysis of aircraft overruns and undershoots for runway safety areas proposing the ACRP hazard probability model. In the present study the model was integrated into a two-step Monte Carlo simulation procedure to assess the risk of overrun accidents and to provide a topological risk map for a specific …

As tactical aircraft become increasingly complex, pilots’ cognitive resources will become increasingly strained, especially as more critical and multifaceted information is presented on Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs). Therefore, it is critical to ensure training results in pilots learning optimal strategies for operating in this information-rich environment, including appropriate attention allocation between different dynamic, adjustable displays and efficient scan strategies. To achieve this, a performance assessment and debrief system was developed that incorporates eye tracking technology into an HMD-enabled multirole fighter simulation to capture and process gaze data to aid in diagnosing why a pilot error occurred. The system utilizes eye …

United States Air Force: Publications
The autoignition characteristics of military aviation fuels (JP-5 and JP-8), proposed camelina-derived hydroprocessed renewable jet fuel replacements (HRJ-8 and HRJ-5), Fischer–Tropsch fuels (Shell and Sasol), three Sasol isoparaffinic solvents, as well as 50/50 volumetric blends of the alternative fuels with the conventional fuels are examined. Experiments were conducted in a rapid compression machine and shock tube at compressed temperatures of 625 K ≤ Tc ≤ 1000 K, a compressed pressure of 20 bar, and under stoichiometric and lean conditions. Several implicit properties of the alternative fuels prompted a study of the influence of chemical composition on autoignition, including the influence …

In spite of researchers’ concerns to find causalities, reviewing the literature of psychological studies one may argue that the classical statistical methods applied in order to find causalities are unable to find uncertainty and indeterminacies of the relationships between concepts.
In this paper, we introduce two methods to find effective solutions by identifying “hidden” patterns in the patients’ cognitive maps. Combined Overlap Block Fuzzy Cognitive Map (COBFCM) and Combined Overlap Block Neutrosophic Map (COBNCM) are effective when the number of concepts can be grouped and are large in numbers. In the first section, we introduce COBFCM, COBNCM, their applications, and …
How System Errors Affect Aircrew Resource Management (Crm), Justin Y. Adkins, Kevin Macg. Adams, Patrick T. Hester
How System Errors Affect Aircrew Resource Management (Crm), Justin Y. Adkins, Kevin Macg. Adams, Patrick T. Hester
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
System errors, both mechanical and human in nature, can have a grave effect on aircrew judgement in flight. The effects of these errors can be massively compounded during emergency situations. Crew Resource Management (CRM) is an important process aircrews can utilize to minimize risks and enhance assessments. The employment of this technique can be validated by aviation mishaps over the last three decades and how system errors increased the probability of the incident occurring. Suggestions can be made to further prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future utilizing historical aeronautical records. This paper outlines an approach by which systems …

Marbles: The Application Of Input-Output Concepts To Safety Management Systems, Tim Brady, A. Stolzer, Anthony Brickhouse, Antonio Cortes, Dan Mccune, Jayathi Raghavan, David Freiwald
Publications
The goal of this research was to apply the economic concept titled Input-Output Analysis to an aviation safety concept titled Safety Management Systems (SMS). Input-Output (IO) is based upon the interrelationships of various components of an economic system and what happens to the system when one or more of those components changes. Since SMS is, by definition, a system with definable components, the research sought to determine if the interrelationships between those components could be determined and quantified. The term ‘‘marbles’’ was used to describe the activities that led to the IO-SMS matrix. Marbles was used as a metaphor for …
Is “Green Dot” Always The Optimum Engines-Out Glide Speed On The Airbus A320 Aircraft?, Kivanc A. Avrenli, Barry J. Dempsey
Is “Green Dot” Always The Optimum Engines-Out Glide Speed On The Airbus A320 Aircraft?, Kivanc A. Avrenli, Barry J. Dempsey
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The dual-engine failure checklist of the Airbus A320 states that the optimum airspeed at which the aircraft can be flown is the “green dot” speed when an engine restart is considered impossible. This is because the “green dot” speed maximizes the power-off glide range in wings-level flight. However, it is not known whether the “green dot” speed would still be the optimum airspeed if the power-off landing maneuver primarily consists of sharp turns. The objective of this study is to find out the optimum power-off glide speed for the A320 if the emergency landing maneuver primarily requires sharp turns rather …
Causes And Trends In Maintenance-Related Accidents In Faa-Certified Single Engine Piston Aircraft, Douglas Boyd, A. Stolzer
Causes And Trends In Maintenance-Related Accidents In Faa-Certified Single Engine Piston Aircraft, Douglas Boyd, A. Stolzer
Publications
The accident rate for general aviation remains high. While most general aviation accident studies have been pilot-focused, there is little research on the involvement of aircraft maintenance errors. We undertook a study to answer this question.
The Microsoft Access database was queried for accidents occurring between 1989 and 2013 involving single engine piston airplanes operating under 14CFR Part 91. Pearson Chi-Square, Fisher’s Exact Test, and Poisson probability were used in statistical analyses.
The rate of maintenance-related general aviation accidents was 4.3 per million flight hours for the 1989–1993 period and remained unchanged for the most recent period (2009–2013). Maintenance errors …
A Trustworthiness Of Commercial Airline Pilots (T-Cap) Scale For American Consumers, Stephen C. Rice, Rian Mehta, Scott Winter, Korhan Oyman
A Trustworthiness Of Commercial Airline Pilots (T-Cap) Scale For American Consumers, Stephen C. Rice, Rian Mehta, Scott Winter, Korhan Oyman
Publications
The purpose of this study was to create a Trustworthiness of Commercial Airline Pilots (T-CAP) scale that could be used with American participants. Previous research (Rice, Mehta, Steelman, & Winter, 2014) created a similar scale that may be used with Indian participants. However, due to cultural differences, it was necessary to recreate an instrument that could be used with American consumers. In fact, the scale developed by American participants did differ significantly, both in terms of length and items to measure trustworthiness of commercial pilots. Participants were used in the entire process of creating the scale, including item generation and …
