Modernizing A Preventive Maintenance Strategy For Facility And Infrastructure Maintenance, Ross E. Dotzlaf Mar 2009

Modernizing A Preventive Maintenance Strategy For Facility And Infrastructure Maintenance, Ross E. Dotzlaf

Theses and Dissertations

Preventive maintenance (PM) is defined as regularly scheduled maintenance actions based on average failure rates. A properly implemented PM strategy can provide many benefits to an organization in terms of extending equipment life, optimizing resource expenditures, and balancing work schedules. Periodic evaluation of a PM strategy can help identify ways to improve efficiencies and maximize effectiveness. This research effort was accomplished by performing a case study of the United States Air Force’s infrastructure and facility PM program known as the Recurring Work Program (RWP). The methodology consisted of two phases. The first phase, intended to develop an understanding of the …

Exploiting A Gsm Network For Precise Payload Delivery, Eugene A. Bourakov, Oleg A. Yakimenko, Nathan Slegers Jan 2009

Exploiting A Gsm Network For Precise Payload Delivery, Eugene A. Bourakov, Oleg A. Yakimenko, Nathan Slegers

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper introduces the novel concept of using a GSM network for command of and communications with multiple aerial delivery systems. The research prototype of such a system, Snowflake-N, allows communicating with other network clients via a commercial Blackberry Curve 8310 handheld over a Bluetooth connection. A new architecture allows reassigning targets and sending other relevant commands (via web interface, by voice, data, or text messages) to an onboard autopilot, which is within a network reach, from any place in the world. Similarly, a current position of the descending system and target assignment can be viewed from any computer connected …

Optimal Control For Terminal Guidance Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers, Oleg A. Yakimenko Jan 2009

Optimal Control For Terminal Guidance Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers, Oleg A. Yakimenko

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper deals with the development of guidance, navigation and control algorithms for a prototype of a miniature aerial delivery system capable of high-precision maneuvering and high touchdown accuracy. High accuracy enables use in precision troop resupply, sensor placement, urban warfare reconnaissance, and other similar operations. Specifically, this paper addresses the terminal phase, where uncertainties in winds cause most of the problems. The paper develops a six degree-of-freedom model to adequately address dynamics and kinematics of the prototype delivery system and then reduces it to a two degrees-of-freedom model to develop a model predictive control algorithm for reference trajectory tracking …

Development And Testing Of The Miniature Aerial Delivery System Snowflake, Oleg A. Yakimenko, Nathan Slegers, Robyn A. Tiaden Jan 2009

Development And Testing Of The Miniature Aerial Delivery System Snowflake, Oleg A. Yakimenko, Nathan Slegers, Robyn A. Tiaden

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper discusses the current status of the development of the miniature aerial delivery system to be further employed in a variety of different research projects. It starts from the overall description of the system and proceeds with the discussion of the test results performed so far. Specifically, it addresses the effects of the changing ground winds on touchdown accuracy. The paper ends with conclusions and recommendations.

Farming Systems Education: Case Study Of Swedish Test Pilots, Lennart Salomonsson, Anna Nilsson, Sofia Palmer, Adam Roigart, Charles A. Francis Jan 2009

Farming Systems Education: Case Study Of Swedish Test Pilots, Lennart Salomonsson, Anna Nilsson, Sofia Palmer, Adam Roigart, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

We describe and analyze a pedagogical experiment that introduced a broad and holistic perspective on complete farming systems, systemic learning tools, and a participatory learning strategy at an early stage in agronomy education. The paper describes the adventure of three students, who came from a conventional agronomy program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), who were frustrated with the lack of integrated approaches to the study of agricultural systems and a strong focus on molecular-level processes in their first year of education. They encountered a narrow focus in most courses and the overall curricula of agricultural education that …

Seasonal Adaptation Of Vegetation Color In Satellite Images For Flight Simulations, Yuzhong Shen, Jiang Li, Vamsi Mantena, Srinivas Jakkula Jan 2009

Seasonal Adaptation Of Vegetation Color In Satellite Images For Flight Simulations, Yuzhong Shen, Jiang Li, Vamsi Mantena, Srinivas Jakkula

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Automatic vegetation identification plays an important role in many applications including remote sensing and high performance flight simulations. This paper proposes a novel method that identifies vegetative areas in satellite images and then alters vegetation color to simulate seasonal changes based on training image pairs. The proposed method first generates a vegetation map for pixels corresponding to vegetative areas, using ISODATA clustering and vegetation classification. The ISODATA algorithm determines the number of clusters automatically. We then apply morphological operations to the clustered images to smooth the boundaries between clusters and to fill holes inside clusters. Six features are then computed …
