This paper presents the methodology, development, and results of an end-to-end regolith-to-metal concept for producing aluminum in-situ on the lunar surface, namely, the Lunar In-Situ Aluminum Production through Molten Salt Electrolysis (LISAP-MSE) method. Using electrolytic reduction, aluminum oxide (i.e., alumina) can be reduced into aluminum and oxygen via electrolysis in a molten salt bath. A steady supply of hydrogen chloride could allow this in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) method to supply several necessary materials consumed in the electrolytic reduction step of the process to produce bulk aluminum metal, oxygen, water, and silica from anorthite abundant in lunar highland regions. In this …
Improving The Delivered Specific Impulse Of Composite Rocket Propellant Through Alteration Of Chemical Composition: Methodology And Parameters For Characterization Of Propellant And Validation Of Simulation Software Common To The Amateur Rocketry Community, Isaac O'Brien, Austin Ryan
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In this study, two solid composite rocket propellants were designed utilizing ProPEP, a rocket propellant formulation software common in the amateur and hobby rocketry communities. The two propellants were designed to optimize specific impulse relative to a literature propellant designed by 1020 Research Labs. The literature propellant was also tested in order to validate the design of experiment as well as the mixing and testing procedures. All three propellants, which includes the literature propellant RCS-P, and the two novel propellants AKR-P1 and AKR-P2 were characterized with static tests. The results of the static tests provide data on propellant performance and …

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Passive radiation shielding is one strategy to mitigate the problem of space radiation exposure. While space vehicles are constructed largely of aluminum, polyethylene has been demonstrated to have superior shielding characteristics for both galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events due to the high hydrogen content. A method to calculate the shielding effectiveness of a material relative to reference material from Bragg peak measurements performed using energetic heavy charged particles is described. Using accelerated alpha particles at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the method is applied to sample tiles from the Heat …

Distinction In Corrosion Resistance Of Selective Laser Melted Ti-6al-4v Alloy On Different Planes, Nianwei Dai, Laichang Zhang, Junxi Zhang, Xin Zhang, Qingzhao Ni, Yang Chen
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Electrochemical measurements and microstructural analysis were performed to study the corrosion resistance of different planes of Ti-6Al-4V alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). The electrochemical results suggest that its XY-plane possesses a better corrosion resistance compared to XZ-plane in 1 M HCl solution, in spite of slight difference in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, suggesting that the different planes exhibit more pronounced distinction in corrosion resistance in harsher solution system. The inferior corrosion resistance of XZ-plane is attributed to the presence of more α′ martensite and less β-Ti phase in microstructure for XZ-plane than for XY-plane of the SLM-produced Ti-6Al-4V …
Manufacturing Processes In An All-Aluminum Airframe, Stewart Mcdougall
Manufacturing Processes In An All-Aluminum Airframe, Stewart Mcdougall
Aerospace Engineering
One often overlooked aspect to building an aircraft is the manufacturing process used to put it into production. This may be a major contributor to acquisition cost and requires a large amount of money to implement. Once all the tooling has been purchased, one of the greatest costs is labor. The experience of building an all-aluminum aircraft shows that the production process is one which may be done in many different ways. Minimizing the assembly time is important for aircraft manufacturers and one of the best ways to do that is on the assembly line itself. Specific practices in the …
Neural Network Fatigue Life Prediction In Notched Aluminum Specimens From Acoustic Emission Data, Muhammed Arif Okur
Neural Network Fatigue Life Prediction In Notched Aluminum Specimens From Acoustic Emission Data, Muhammed Arif Okur
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This purpose of this research was to identify fatigue crack growth and predict failure for 7075-T6 aluminum notched bars under uniaxial tensile loading using acoustic emission (AE) data. The experiments performed in this study extend the results obtained by previous researchers who used maximum cyclic loads of 4,000, 3,000, and 2,000 pounds at a stress ratio of R = 0.0 and a frequency of 1 Hz to perform the fatigue tests. For this research the cyclic load remained at 2,000 pounds, but an additional ten specimens were tested in order to increase the amount of AE data available to the …
Prediction Of Fatigue Life In 7075-T6 Aluminum From Neural Network Analysis Of Acoustic Emission Data, Nicholas S. Spivey
Prediction Of Fatigue Life In 7075-T6 Aluminum From Neural Network Analysis Of Acoustic Emission Data, Nicholas S. Spivey
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Through the use of an acoustic emission (AE) data acquisition system, a Kohonen self-organizing map, and a back-propagation neural network, AE data from 7075-T6 aluminum specimens were used to classify failure mechanisms and predict the number of fatigue cycles to failure. AE waveforms were captured from 40 notched tensile specimens during the low-cycle fatiguing process. A Kohonen self-organizing map and initial data filters were used to classify the data into two distinct failure mechanisms, plane strain and plane stress fracture, plus a third less prevalent mechanism. These results were employed to construct a back-propagation neural network to predict the number …

Neural Network Fatigue Life Prediction In 7075-T6 Aluminum From Acoustic Emission Data, Emeka Chigozie Ibekwe
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The objective of this research was to classify acoustic emission (AE) -data associated with fatigue cracks in aluminum fatigue specimens and to use early cycle life AE data to predict failure in such members. An AE data acquisition system coupled with a Kohonen self organizing map and a back propagation neural network were used to perform the analysis. AE waveforms were recorded during fatigue cycling of twenty-four notched 7075-T6 aluminum specimens using broad-band piezoelectric transducers. A Kohonen self organizing map was used to classify the AE flaw growth signals. The signals were classified into three categories based on their AE …
Classification Of Acoustic Emission Signals From An Aluminum Pressure Vessel Using A Self-Organizing Map, Weldon Paul Thornton
Classification Of Acoustic Emission Signals From An Aluminum Pressure Vessel Using A Self-Organizing Map, Weldon Paul Thornton
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Acoustic emission nondestructive testing has been used for real-time monitoring of complex structures. All of the structures were made of materials at least 0.070 inch thick. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the feasibility of using neural networks to classify acoustic emission signals gathered from a pressure vessel made of 2024-T3 aluminum 0.040 inches thick, i.e. thin aluminum sheet. AE waveforms were recorded during fatigue cycling of one pressure vessel using a wide band transducer and a digital oscilloscope connected to a computer. The source for each signal was determined using two narrow band transducers and a LOCAN-AT …
