Global Time-Resolved Measurements Of Inlet/Isolator Unstart Induced By Mass Injection, Andrew N. Bustard, Benjamin L. Bemis, Aaron Marques, Matthew J. Zahr, Thomas J. Juliano

Publications

The inner surface pressure of an axisymmetric inlet/isolator model was measured using anodized-aluminum pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) viewing through cast acrylic. Temperaturesensitive paint was utilized to correct for the PSP’s temperature sensitivity. The model was tested under Mach 5.7 flow at 𝑹𝒆 = 7.1 ×106 /m under conventional noise conditions. Transverse jet injection with jet-to-inlet mass-flow ratios up to 0.8 was used to induce unstart in the inlet/isolator. Background-oriented schlieren visualization of the inlet shocks was collected simultaneously with the PSP to determine when the inlet unstarted. Computational fluid dynamics results were used to determine off-wall flow structures and quantify approach …

The Effect Of Pre-Thermal And -Load Conditions On In-718 High Temperature Fatigue Life, Paulina De La Torre, Alberto Mello Mar 2022

The Effect Of Pre-Thermal And -Load Conditions On In-718 High Temperature Fatigue Life, Paulina De La Torre, Alberto Mello

Ni-based superalloys are largely used in the aerospace industry as critical components for turbine engines due to their excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance at high temperatures. A hypothesis to explain this atypical characteristic among metals is the presence of a cross-slip mechanism. Previous work on the role of thermal activation on cubic slip has shown strain accommodation in two sets of slip planes, which resembled the activation of {100} cubic slip systems along of the octahedral slip planes {111} in Ni-based superalloys under high strain and temperature, exhibiting a more homogeneous strain distribution and less strain localization. Following those …

Influence Of Cold Expansion And Aggressive Environment On Crack Growth In Aa2024-T3, Ken Shishino, Christopher Leirer, Alberto Mello Mar 2022

Influence Of Cold Expansion And Aggressive Environment On Crack Growth In Aa2024-T3, Ken Shishino, Christopher Leirer, Alberto Mello

Publications

This research aims to establish the effect of hole cold expansion on fatigue life of pre-cracked material under aggressive environment. A relationship between crack propagation and secondary crack initiation was established for AA2024-T3 cold worked holes subjected to cyclic loads to determine the impact on fatigue life of joints in presence of saline solution. Galvanic corrosion of a steel fastener/aluminum plate assembly was investigated assuming the presence of cracks in the aluminum plates, whose growth will be monitored in-situ with a digital microscope throughout the fatigue process. The cold expansion treatment improved the fatigue life fourfold under a corrosive environment, …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Low Speed Wing Design Using Taguchi L9 Orthogonal Array, Kenneth Witcher, Ian Mcandrew, Elena Vishnevskaya Feb 2018

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Low Speed Wing Design Using Taguchi L9 Orthogonal Array, Kenneth Witcher, Ian Mcandrew, Elena Vishnevskaya

Publications

The study of aerodynamics has been preoccupied with understanding flight at increasing speeds and ultimately supersonic. Today, this pursuit has advanced the science for both Hypersonic and Transonic flight to near Mach 1 supporting economical commercial flight operations. This research presents the data from a Taguchi array on low speed with twin wing designs to establish the design parameters for their use in low speed and high altitude. Also presented is how aerodynamic advantages can be achieved through understanding the interactions of parameters and their use. This is compared to operational effectiveness when applied to remotely piloted aircraft that are …

Validation Of Proposed Metrics For Two-Body Abrasion Scratch Test Analysis Standards: In Principle, Any Scratch Can Be Analyzed By This Method, Kenneth W. Street, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus Feb 2013

Validation Of Proposed Metrics For Two-Body Abrasion Scratch Test Analysis Standards: In Principle, Any Scratch Can Be Analyzed By This Method, Kenneth W. Street, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus

Abrasion of mechanical components and fabrics by soil on Earth is typically minimized by the effects of atmosphere and water. Potentially abrasive particles lose sharp and pointed geometrical features through erosion. In environments where such erosion does not exist, such as the vacuum of the Moon, particles retain sharp geometries associated with fracturing of their parent particles by micrometeorite impacts. The relationship between hardness of the abrasive and that of the material being abraded is well understood, such that the abrasive ability of a material can be estimated as a function of the ratio of the hardness of the two …

Validation Of Proposed Metrics For Two-Body Abrasion Scratch Test Analysis Standards, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street

The objective of this work was to evaluate a set of standardized metrics proposed for characterizing a surface that has been scratched from a two-body abrasion test. This is achieved by defining a new abrasion region termed “Zone of Interaction” (ZOI). The ZOI describes the full surface profile of all peaks and valleys, rather than just measuring a scratch width as currently defined by the ASTM G 171 Standard. The ZOI has been found to be at least twice the size of a standard width measurement, in some cases considerably greater, indicating that at least half of the disturbed surface …

Three-Body Abrasion Testing Using Lunar Dust Simulants To Evaluate Surface System Materials, Ryan L. Kobrick, Kenneth G. Budinski, Kenneth W. Street Jr., David M. Klaus Aug 2010

Three-Body Abrasion Testing Using Lunar Dust Simulants To Evaluate Surface System Materials, Ryan L. Kobrick, Kenneth G. Budinski, Kenneth W. Street Jr., David M. Klaus

Publications

Numerous unexpected operational issues relating to the abrasive nature of lunar dust, such as scratched visors and spacesuit pressure seal leaks, were encountered during the Apollo missions. To avoid reoccurrence of these unexpected detrimental equipment problems on future missions to the Moon, a series of two- and three-body abrasion tests were developed and conducted in order to begin rigorously characterizing the effect of lunar dust abrasiveness on candidate surface system materials. Two-body scratch tests were initially performed to examine fundamental interactions of a single particle on a flat surface. These simple and robust tests were used to establish standardized measurement …

Developing Abrasion Test Standards For Evaluating Lunar Construction Materials, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street Jul 2009

Developing Abrasion Test Standards For Evaluating Lunar Construction Materials, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street

Publications

Operational issues encountered by Apollo astronauts relating to lunar dust were catalogued, including material abrasion that resulted in scratches and wear on spacesuit components, ultimately impacting visibility, joint mobility and pressure retention. Standard methods are being developed to measure abrasive wear on candidate construction materials to be used for spacesuits, spacecraft, and robotics. Calibration tests were conducted using a standard diamond stylus scratch tip on the common spacecraft structure aluminum, Al 6061-T6. Custom tips were fabricated from terrestrial counterparts of lunar minerals for scratching Al 6061-T6 and comparing to standard diamond scratches. Considerations are offered for how to apply standards …
