Aeroelastic Simulation Of Shape Adaptive Wing, Allan Alfred Kozich Iii
Aeroelastic Simulation Of Shape Adaptive Wing, Allan Alfred Kozich Iii
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Morphing wings provide aerodynamic qualities that normal fixed wings cannot, such as the ability to improve endurance yet maintain maneuverability, overcome strong gusts, vibrations, and shocks, and handle both ideal flight for both high and low speeds. A critical application of the new generation of morphing wings is the ability to overcome and affect the onset flutter, a self-excited oscillatory instability that has led to the destruction of aircrafts. This work investigates aeroelastic behavior and measurement of a meta-material structured "smart" wing and its attempt to delay the effect of flutter. The variable wing tip model is analyzed through finite …
Vibration-Based Control Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Ossyris N. Bury
Vibration-Based Control Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Ossyris N. Bury
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis investigates vibration-based stability as a mechanism for achieving self-stabilizing nonlinear dynamic motion in engineered systems. Inspired by biological hovering flight, in which periodic wing motion can passively enhance stability, the study explores how controlled oscillations can be used to stabilize otherwise unstable mechanical configurations. The research centers on a simplified dynamic model based on the Kapitza pendulum, an inverted pendulum with a vertically oscillating base, which serves as a foundation for understanding vibration-induced stabilization. Analytical modeling using Lagrangian mechanics is employed to derive the governing equations of motion and identify the excitation conditions required for stable inverted behavior. …
Structural Batteries For Aerospace Applications, Tariqullah Wardak
Structural Batteries For Aerospace Applications, Tariqullah Wardak
Honors Undergraduate Theses
There is increasing pressure on the aviation sector to lower carbon emissions and switch to entirely electric and hybrid propulsion systems. However, the feasibility of standard lithium-ion batteries for long-range aircraft is limited, as they add substantial weight and occupy significant volume. Structural batteries, which combine load-bearing capability with energy storage, offer a potential pathway to lighter and more efficient aerospace systems.
This work investigates a carbon-fiber-based structural battery that utilizes carbon fiber as both a current-collecting, load-bearing electrode and a component of the composite structure. In contrast to lithium-ion chemistries, a zinc-based aqueous electrolyte is chosen for better environmental …
Determination Of Damage Initiation Mechanisms In Aerospace Alloys Due To Stress Corrosion Cracking Via In-Situ Microscale Characterization Techniques, Remelisa Esteves
Determination Of Damage Initiation Mechanisms In Aerospace Alloys Due To Stress Corrosion Cracking Via In-Situ Microscale Characterization Techniques, Remelisa Esteves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Aluminum alloys are used on aerospace vehicles due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, formability and machinability. However, they become vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) during their service life. SCC is primarily caused by the material's stress condition, a suitable corrosive environment and material susceptibility. It is also influenced by a mixture of electrochemical, mechanical, and chemical factors. Due to the complexity of SCC, tools with better resolution and sensitivity are needed to better understand the impact and interaction of the contributing factors. A vast amount of research has been done to study SCC behavior, but the scale of characterization …
Characterizing Air Plasma Sprayed Aluminum Oxide Coatings For The Protection Of Structures In Lunar Environments, Perla Latorre Suarez
Characterizing Air Plasma Sprayed Aluminum Oxide Coatings For The Protection Of Structures In Lunar Environments, Perla Latorre Suarez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Wear-resistant ceramic and ceramic composite coatings are significant to provide durability and support long-duration missions to the moon's surface for rovers, landers, robotic systems, habitats, and many other components. On the Lunar surface, structural components are continuously exposed to lunar dust projectiles that can cause protective coating delamination around the affected area, of protective coatings and this may not be physically visible. Ceramic coatings, composed of alumina, present excellent resistance to different types of wear due to their high strength and hardness as well as the ability to protect structural components from regolith impacts, wear, and abrasive damage. Air Plasma …
Creasing Of Polyimide Thin Film For Use In Solar Sails, Andrew Allen
Creasing Of Polyimide Thin Film For Use In Solar Sails, Andrew Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Polymer thin membranes are used in a variety of deployable structures that require large areas and compact stowage. Packaging membrane structures often involves creasing the membrane along predefined fold lines to enforce the desired kinematics under folding action. Inducing permanent deformation by folding to a high curvature is a common method to create creases, particularly in the design of solar sails. The distinct mechanical characteristics at the crease regions have a profound effect on the subsequent deployment and tensioning of the membrane structures. The mechanical and geometric properties at the crease are related to the crease formation process, but the …

Carbon emissions are known to cause decay of the Ozone layer in addition to creating pollutant, poisonous air. This has become a growing concern among scientists and engineers across the globe; if this issue is not addressed, it is likely that the Earth will suffer catastrophic consequences. One of the main culprits of these harmful carbon emissions is fuel combustion. Between vehicles, power plants, airplanes, and ships, the world consumes an extraordinary amount of oil and fuel which all contributes to the emissions problem. Therefore, it is crucial to develop alternative energy sources that minimize the impact on the environment. …
Characterization Of Dispersion And Residual Stress In Nanoparticle Reinforced Hybrid Carbon Fiber Composites, Alex Selimov
Characterization Of Dispersion And Residual Stress In Nanoparticle Reinforced Hybrid Carbon Fiber Composites, Alex Selimov
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Hybrid carbon fiber reinforced composites are a new breed of materials that are currently being explored and characterized for next generation aerospace applications. Through the introduction of secondary reinforcements, such as alumina nanoparticles, hybrid properties including improved mechanical properties and stress sensing capabilities can be achieved. In order to maximize these properties, it is necessary to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of particulate filler. Utilizing the photoluminescent properties of alumina, it is possible to compare local levels of particle concentration through emission intensities as a way to determine the effectiveness of the tested manufacturing parameters in increasing material homogeneity. Parameters of …
