Computer Based Modeling For Small E-Vtol Propeller Performance, Ege Konuk
Computer Based Modeling For Small E-Vtol Propeller Performance, Ege Konuk
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The emerging field of urban air mobility (UAM) offers a novel transportation method for civil, commercial, and military applications. Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) configurations present challenges for performance prediction during crucial flight operations. An advanced computational framework for predicting propeller performance in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft during transition flight is essential for future concept designs. This research extends the Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) to model propeller behavior at high incidence angles, crucial for eVTOL operation.
The study begins with a review of tilt-wing/rotor configurations for eVTOLs and tackles the complex aerodynamic phenomena associated with rotors …
Design And Implementation Of A Launching Method For Free To Oscillate Dynamic Stability Testing, Kristen M. Carey
Design And Implementation Of A Launching Method For Free To Oscillate Dynamic Stability Testing, Kristen M. Carey
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems (MSBS) allow for static, forced oscillation and free to oscillate dynamic stability testing in a wind tunnel without the need for a physical support. The objectives of study are to assist in the application of the free to oscillate testing method in an MSBS to determine dynamic stability characteristics for various re-entry capsule designs.
This thesis discusses the development and testing of a launching method called the grabber for use in the MSBS Subsonic Wind Tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center. Aerodynamic tests were run to support the use of this method and compare the …
An Investigation Into The Potential Benefits Of Distributed Electric Propulsion On Small Uavs At Low Reynolds Numbers, Engin Baris
An Investigation Into The Potential Benefits Of Distributed Electric Propulsion On Small Uavs At Low Reynolds Numbers, Engin Baris
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Distributed electric propulsion systems benefit from the inherent scale independence of electric propulsion. This property allows the designer to place multiple small electric motors along the wing of an aircraft instead of using a single or several internal combustion motors with gear boxes or other power train components. Aircraft operating at low Reynolds numbers are ideal candidates for benefiting from increased local flow velocities as provided by distributed propulsion systems.
In this study, a distributed electric propulsion system made up of eight motor/propellers was integrated into the leading edge of a small fixed wing-body model to investigate the expected improvements …
Thrust Prediction For A Rotor Operating In A Ship Airwake, Mathew Thomas
Thrust Prediction For A Rotor Operating In A Ship Airwake, Mathew Thomas
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This report details work performed at Old Dominion University focused on developing a thrust prediction capability for a rotor operating in a ship airwake. The study has built upon previous experimental work utilizing particle image velocimetry-based velocity field measurements to quantify the degree of coupling in a simplified rotor/ship airwake experiment. Using the velocity field data of the previous study, a database was built representing the volume over the landing deck. Rotor thrust was computed using blade element methods and compared to direct load cell measurements and to a superposed velocity field. Results show that the blade element method has …
Performance Characteristics Of Fluidic-Based Thrust Augmentation Using A Slot Jet For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Propulsion, Brendan A. Wiedow
Performance Characteristics Of Fluidic-Based Thrust Augmentation Using A Slot Jet For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Propulsion, Brendan A. Wiedow
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Currently most small vertical takeoff and landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UA V's) use a quadcopter design by utilizing four exposed blades rotating at high RPMs around a central array of components. The research performed in this thesis is focused on understanding the underlying fluid dynamics of a slot jet through the use of flow entrainment for thrust augmentation with the application to be integrated into a novel UAV system with no external moving parts. Current publicly available quadcopter rotor design type aircraft were used as a basis for the design target weight and power to estimate the amount of thrust …
Laminar Deflagrated Flame Interaction With A Fluidic Jet Flow For Deflagration-To-Detonation Flame Acceleration, Joseph P. Mcgarry
Laminar Deflagrated Flame Interaction With A Fluidic Jet Flow For Deflagration-To-Detonation Flame Acceleration, Joseph P. Mcgarry
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The concept of the Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) has been of interest for centuries. The issue was originally studied to understand flame propagation in mine shafts after explosions due to methane buildup. The flames would travel down the shafts, transitioning to turbulent flames due to the roughness of the shaft walls, and accelerate to detonation, delivering powerful, destructive forces. The potential for efficient energy production was noticed, and the theory behind flame propagation was later applied to developing propulsion systems. Recently, researchers have begun to understand the full potential of PDEs to efficiently produce an immense amount of thrust due …
Design Improvements For A Reusable Horizontal Takeoff And Landing Aircraft For Use On Mars, Brian A. Skoog
Design Improvements For A Reusable Horizontal Takeoff And Landing Aircraft For Use On Mars, Brian A. Skoog
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities are required for expanded exploration of the Martian surface. These vehicles can not only gather data at an altitude otherwise unreachable by rovers and satellites, but also deliver small payloads and retrieve samples from distant off-site locations. Previous multi-purpose reusable Mars aircraft studies have been unable to achieve the flight ranges required for expanded exploration. This study has focused on increasing the range of prototype aircraft designs. Assuming that large precision cargo delivery capabilities have been developed and much of the infrastructure associated with a fixed Mars base is in place, the challenge of linking dispersed …
System Identification Of An Autonomous Surface Vehicle, Christopher John Cook
System Identification Of An Autonomous Surface Vehicle, Christopher John Cook
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The modeling and system identification of a small pontoon based marine craft, without rudder control, in a controlled environment. Old Dominion University's autonomous surface vehicle was modeled using the Observer/Kalman System Identification method. The experimental position data was collected using a laser positioning system along with Arduino based sensors on board the boat to collect the motor speeds of the dual outboard motors. The data was then compiled using the System/ Observer/Controller Identification Toolbox to derive a dynamic model that is capable of providing path estimation and prediction information to the autonomous robotic system.
Mars Carbon Dioxide Propulsion, Christopher Cushman Perry
Mars Carbon Dioxide Propulsion, Christopher Cushman Perry
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
An experimental investigation was conducted to characterize the performance of a small-scale supersonic propulsion system using supercritical CO2 as a propellant intended for Mars surface applications. This research has focused on estimating the specific impulse behavior of high-pressure carbon dioxide propellant that can be produced by condensing dry ice out of Mars's atmosphere and heating it at constant volume to temperatures above its 31.1 ° C critical temperature. Since supercritical fluid was created by heating different dry ice-vapor mixtures to moderate temperatures, the nominal initial density and thermodynamic state within the pressure vessel could be controlled. The instrumented test …
