Application Of Spectral Solution And Neural Network Techniques In Plasma Modeling For Electric Propulsion, Joseph R. Whitman Sep 2018

Application Of Spectral Solution And Neural Network Techniques In Plasma Modeling For Electric Propulsion, Joseph R. Whitman

Theses and Dissertations

A solver for Poisson's equation was developed using the Radix-2 FFT method first invented by Carl Friedrich Gauss. Its performance was characterized using simulated data and identical boundary conditions to those found in a Hall Effect Thruster. The characterization showed errors below machine-zero with noise-free data, and above 20% noise-to-signal strength, the error increased linearly with the noise. This solver can be implemented into AFRL's plasma simulator, the Thermophysics Universal Research Framework (TURF) and used to quickly and accurately compute the electric field based on charge distributions. The validity of a machine learning approach and data-based complex system modeling approach …

Reconstruction Of The 3d Temperature And Species Concentration Spatial Distribution Of A Jet Engine Exhaust Plume Using An Infrared Fourier Transform Spectrometer Hyperspectral Imager, Mason D. Paulec

Theses and Dissertations

The measurement of combustion byproducts is useful for determining pollution of any fuel burning application, efficiency of combustion, and determining detectability of aircraft exhausts. Both intrusive and non-intrusive techniques have been utilized to measure these quantities. For the majority of the non-intrusive techniques, the absorption and emission spectra of the gases are utilized for measurements. For this research, the use of the Telops Infrared Fourier Transform Spectrometer (IFTS) Hyperspectral Imager (HSI) was explored within the scope of combustion diagnostic methods, as an option for remote measurements of a jet turbine to determine concentration of species and temperature of the combustion …

Investigation Of A Pressure Wave Supercharger For An Industrial Diesel Engine, Brian A. Beasley Sep 2018

Investigation Of A Pressure Wave Supercharger For An Industrial Diesel Engine, Brian A. Beasley

Theses and Dissertations

Internal combustion engines suffer from decreased performance as altitude is in- creased. This performance decrease can be overcome by increasing the pressure in the engine's intake manifold. Typically, this is accomplished with a turbocharger or supercharger. However, mechanical compression devices such as these suffer from decrease compression efficiency as the size of the device decreases. The size of the compression device scales with the amount of mass ow through the device, and the amount of mass ow is proportional to the size of the engine. This means a small turbocharger for a small engine is less efficient than a larger …

Design, Buildup, And Testing Of A Radial Rotating Detonation Engine For A Compact Auxiliary Power Unit, Riley Huff

Theses and Dissertations

Current power generators consume a large portion of the aircrafts usable volume and they are also extremely heavy for the amount of power that they can produce. Therefore, a need for compact, lightweight Auxiliary Power Units (APU) with high power density has arisen. A novel solution to this problem comes in the form of coupling a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) with a turbine generator. A new type of RDE referred to as the Radial Rotating Detonation Engine (RRDE) has been developed to fill this need. This project marks the first radial ow RDE successfully operated in the United States, and …

Electric propulsion is a promising method for providing ΔV to spacecraft on orbit. In general, much higher ISPS are obtained compared to their chemical counterparts. Hall thrusters are a subset of electric propulsion with moderately high specific impulse and thrust when compared to other forms of electric propulsion. Even though Hall thrusters have an extensive flight legacy around the world, there are still many unknowns associated with their operation. Experimental research was conducted in AFIT’s Space Propulsion Application Simulation System (SPASS) laboratory, to measure Hall current, plasma potential and visible emission from the 600W Hall thruster in a …

The Scaling Of Loss Pathways And Heat Transfer In Small Scale Internal Combustion Engines, Joseph K. Ausserer Sep 2016

The Scaling Of Loss Pathways And Heat Transfer In Small Scale Internal Combustion Engines, Joseph K. Ausserer

Theses and Dissertations

Prior literature indicates fuel conversion efficiency and normalized power deteriorate increasingly rapidly with decreasing displacement, but does not fully reveal the driving losses. The literature also suggested that increasing losses relax the required fuel anti-knock index (AKI), but offered conflicting conclusions on the performance impact. This comprehensive experimental study of three, 28 cm3 to 85 cm3 displacement, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), two-stroke ICEs identified short-circuiting as having the most deleterious impact on COTS engine performance in this size range. Heat transfer losses were comparable to larger engines for displaced volumes greater than 10 cm3. An engine friction model was developed that uses …

Design And Experimentation Of A Premixed Rotating Detonation Engine, Ionio Q. Andrus Jun 2016

Design And Experimentation Of A Premixed Rotating Detonation Engine, Ionio Q. Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

Desire for a more efficient air breathing engine has shifted research attention to the Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE). Detonation is a more efficient combustion process than deflagration and provides a pressure gain. The RDE detonation cycle occurs in a compact volume to produce a high specific impulse engine. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models have predicted higher specific impulse and detonation wave speeds than has been seen in experimental RDE. The CFD models frequently assume premixed reactants and ignore inlet geometries to facilitate rapid computation. An experimental premixed RDE was sought to test if the premixed assumption in CFD was the …

Design, Manufacturing, And Testing Of A Small Through-Flow Wave For Use Within The Brayton Cycle, Micahel J. Mcclearn

Theses and Dissertations

With the ever growing popularity of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles for military, commercial, and private usage, there is a desire to improve performance in terms of range, altitude, and flight speed. Current technology uses either electric motors or internal combustion engines: both piston and jet engine types. These sorts of engines undergo significant efficiency degradation as their size decreases. While some efficiency may be recovered via intensive design studies, the cycles are approaching the limit to their operating physics. A possible solution to this is to change the operating physics to something more immune to scaling losses; a …

A combination of intrusive and non-intrusive measurement techniques were used to investigate the properties of the exhaust plume of two Hall thrusters and correlate optical characteristics of oscillating modes with the plasma potential and azimuthal current distribution during those modes. A strong trend was found associating the optical …

Enhanced Flow Migration In Full Annular Ultra Compact Combustor, Nicholas A. Gilbert Mar 2016

Enhanced Flow Migration In Full Annular Ultra Compact Combustor, Nicholas A. Gilbert

Theses and Dissertations

Since combustion efficiency in modern jet engines has stabilized, attention has turned to improving the combustor by improving the thrust-to-weight ratio. The Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) is a means to reduce the weight of the combustor while ensuring exhaust meets increasingly stringent government emission standards. Combustion occurs within the UCC under a g-load in the circumferential direction, which maintains combustion efficiency while decreasing axial combustor length. Previous analysis optimized the combustion chamber flame characteristics with a common upstream air source. Previously, issues for the UCC were inspired by integration into a traditional axial turbojet. The focus of this investigation was …

Spectroscopic Measurement Of Gas Temperature In Small Internal Combustion Engines, Matthew J. Deutsch Mar 2016

Spectroscopic Measurement Of Gas Temperature In Small Internal Combustion Engines, Matthew J. Deutsch

Theses and Dissertations

The Small Engine Research Bench (SERB) was used previously to measure spatially and temporally averaged heat flux, as well as local, instantaneous heat flux at several external locations, for a series of small engines (1 - 10 kW). This investigation obtained time averaged crank angle resolved measurements of the in-cylinder gas temperature using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption thermometry. The results, coupled with heat flux measurements, will enable the validation or refinement of existing thermal energy loss models.

Computer Modeling Of A Rotating Detonation Engine In A Rocket Configuration, Nihar Shah Mar 2015

Computer Modeling Of A Rotating Detonation Engine In A Rocket Configuration, Nihar Shah

Theses and Dissertations

Detonation-based combustors leverage the higher thermodynamic efficiency of the Atkinson cycle compared to the traditional deflagration-based combustion of the Brayton cycle. The rotating detonation engine (RDE) has one or more shock waves rotating around an annulus. The RDE can theoretically be 20% more thermally efficient than a traditional deflagration-based cycle. A RDE was modeled in Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) based on a model developed in Microsoft Excel. The thermodynamic analysis of the RDE in these models is broken into four streams. Empirical models were used to find the percentage of the total flow in each stream. The pre-detonation pressure …

Scaling Study Of Wave Rotor Turbo-Normalization Of A Small Internal Combustion Engine, Brandon D. Smith Sep 2012

Scaling Study Of Wave Rotor Turbo-Normalization Of A Small Internal Combustion Engine, Brandon D. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

One issue facing small Remotely Piloted Aircraft engines is their ability to maintain performance at altitude. Since many of these aircraft use commercial off the shelf engines originally designed for radio controlled aircraft and lawn care implements, the reduced pressure environment significantly degrades the operability of the engine as the altitude increases. An option to overcome this difficulty is to supercharge the system; however most superchargers are designed for larger, typically automotive, engines. As a supercharger's size is decreased, there are large efficiency losses. Therefore, there is a need to accomplish this function on a smaller scale without. One option …

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser Jun 2012

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser

Theses and Dissertations

There has been longstanding government and industry interest in pressure-gain combustion for use in Brayton cycle based engines. Theoretically, pressure-gain combustion allows heat addition with reduced entropy loss. The pulsed detonation combustor (PDC) is a device that can provide such pressure-gain combustion and possibly replace typical steady deflagration combustors. The PDC is inherently unsteady, however, and comparisons with conventional steady deflagration combustors must be based upon time-integrated performance variables. In this study, the radial turbine of a Garrett automotive turbocharger was coupled directly to and driven, full admission, by a PDC in experiments fueled by hydrogen or ethylene. Data included …

Detonation combustors provide advantages over current deflagration combustors due to their pressure gain and simplicity of design. Rotary detonation engines (RDEs) offer advantages over pulsed detonation engines (PDEs) due to a steadier exhaust and fewer total system losses. All previous research on turbine integration with detonation combustors has focused on utilizing PDEs to drive axial and centrifugal turbines. The objective of this thesis was the integration and testing of an axial turbine driven by a rotary detonation engine (RDE) to determine turbine operability. In pursuit of this objective, convergent nozzle sections were placed on the RDE to simulate the back-pressurization …

Cooling Requirements For The Ultra Compact Combuster, Donald D. Johnson Mar 2012

Cooling Requirements For The Ultra Compact Combuster, Donald D. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several years, AFIT and the Air Force Research Laboratory have collaboratively investigated a novel combustor system that is compact in design and has potential use in an inter-turbine burner system. The ultra-compact combustor (UCC) design wraps the combustion section circumferentially around the axial core flow and exploits the use of high-g combustion. The combustor's volume and weight are reduced by integrating the exit compressor vane and the turbine inlet vane. This creates a new hybrid vane that resides directly below the circumferential combustor. Recently, a computational effort to understand the fundamental aspects of the UCC on a …

Desensitizing Flame Structure And Exhaust Emissions To Flow Parameters In An Ultra-Compact Combuster, Adam K. Parks Mar 2012

Desensitizing Flame Structure And Exhaust Emissions To Flow Parameters In An Ultra-Compact Combuster, Adam K. Parks

Theses and Dissertations

A major thrust of turbine engine research is to improve both efficiency and thrust-to-weight ratio of the engine. A promising solution to this challenge is the Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC). The UCC shortens the axial length of the combustor by performing combustion circumferentially on the outer diameter of the engine. The reduction in axial length yields significant weight savings and increases the thrust-to-weight ratio. The design also increases combustion efficiency by performing the combustion in a centrifugally loaded environment which allows unreacted particles to remain in the combustor sufficiently long enough to become combustion products. The Air Force Institute of Technology …

Development And Testing Of A Rotating Detonation Engine Run On Hydrogen And Air, Jason C. Shank Mar 2012

Development And Testing Of A Rotating Detonation Engine Run On Hydrogen And Air, Jason C. Shank

Theses and Dissertations

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) have the potential for greater efficiencies over conventional engines by utilizing pressure gain combustion. A new modular RDE (6 in diameter) was developed and successfully run on hydrogen and standard air. The RDE allows for variation of injection scheme and detonation channel widths. Tests provided the operational space of the new RDE as well as characterized detonation unsteadiness. It was found that a smaller equivalence ratio than previous was required to obtain continuous detonations. Also discovered was VCJ was reached in the RDE, but not sustained.

Analysis Of Flow Migration In An Ultra-Compact Combustor, Brian T. Bohan Mar 2011

Analysis Of Flow Migration In An Ultra-Compact Combustor, Brian T. Bohan

Theses and Dissertations

One of the major efforts for turbine engine research is to improve the thrust to weight of the system. One novel concept for accomplishing this is the use of an Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC). The UCC attempts to shorten the overall combustion length (thereby reducing weight) by performing the combustion in the circumferential direction along the outside diameter of the core flowpath. One of the major benefits of this design is enhanced combustion due to the establishment of a high-g field in the circumferential cavity. AFIT and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have been teamed for several years in understanding …
