Performance Evaluation And Thermal Management Solutions For A Sustainable Microsized Hydrogen-Powered Turbo-Shaft Engine, Nikolai Baranov Jul 2023

Performance Evaluation And Thermal Management Solutions For A Sustainable Microsized Hydrogen-Powered Turbo-Shaft Engine, Nikolai Baranov

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Analyzing the aerospace and automotive industries, there is a transition to sustainable energy generation. Aiming to bridge industrial emissions with the worldwide net zero goal by 2050, one widely considered solution for long-range drones and small aircraft is compact turbo-shaft engines combusting clean hydrogen gas to produce shaft work. The small size and energy-dense fuel allow for a universal powerplant with high specific power output that fits a wide variety of existing solutions. One such micro-sized turboshaft internal combustion engine was created to test the potential power output, thermal management, and combustor optimization of the existing stainless steel assembly. The …

Blade Optimization For Ground Level Low Speed Wind Turbines, Ryan Foster Aug 2021

Blade Optimization For Ground Level Low Speed Wind Turbines, Ryan Foster

Symposium of Student Scholars

Low speed wind turbines can provide inexpensive and clean energy in areas where large scale wind power generation is impractical. The purpose of this research is to explore factors that affect the efficiency of low speed wind turbine blades. The factors that were tested include angle of attack, angle of twist, chord length, average thickness, span, and taper ratio. The goal is to determine a combination of these variables to enable maximum power extraction from a low wind speed source. These blade parameters are optimized for the Southeastern region of the United States. NOAA weather data at ground level are …

Perfromance Improvement Of High Bypass Turbofan Engine Through Optimization Of High-Pressure Compressor Blade – A Case Study, Vlad Mandzyuk May 2021

Perfromance Improvement Of High Bypass Turbofan Engine Through Optimization Of High-Pressure Compressor Blade – A Case Study, Vlad Mandzyuk

Symposium of Student Scholars

This research determines the relation between the High-Pressure Compressor (HPC) blade characteristics, compressor pressure ratio, and lift-to-drag ratio of a high bypass turbofan engine. Alterations in the HPC blades airfoil, span, chord, taper ratio, twist, aspect ratio, sweep, and angle of incidence are performed and their effect on the engine’s performance is observed. The metrics used to compare engine performance include thrust, specific thrust, exit velocity, fuel/air ratio, power, and efficiency. Parametric cycle analysis and computational fluid dynamics are performed to compare and validate findings. The goal of this study is to optimize the design of HPC to maximize the …

Design Of A Heavy Lift Rc Aircraft - Society Of Automotive Engineers (Sae) Aero Design® West Competition Team, Jiyoung Hwang, Phillip Nielsen Oct 2018

Design Of A Heavy Lift Rc Aircraft - Society Of Automotive Engineers (Sae) Aero Design® West Competition Team, Jiyoung Hwang, Phillip Nielsen

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

The SAE Aero West design competition challenges undergraduate students to design and build an RC aircraft that will fly with the maximum number of passengers and luggage possible. The ERAU SAE team focuses on simulation-based research and project methods such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), aircraft optimization, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Designing and manufacturing a well-designed heavy lift aircraft and competing with other groups will give experience in solving engineering problems. The Aerodynamics team is currently focusing on score optimization, aircraft performance and configuration. The propulsion team is constructing a test rig to test various propellers and motors to …

Design Of A Thrust Stand For Low Power Electric Propulsion, John Norton Oct 2018

Design Of A Thrust Stand For Low Power Electric Propulsion, John Norton

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

Electric propulsion (EP) has been gaining popularity due to the high efficiencies and specific impulse. These thrusters all follow the same general idea of converting stored electrical potential energy to kinetic energy for the craft; typically, this is accomplished by the acceleration of gas particles through three main methods, electrothermal, electromagnetic, and/or electrostatic. The specific impulse is the change of momentum per unit of propellant expended. While chemical propulsion produces a high change in momentum, they use much more propellant mass than an electric thruster. EP devices will typically produce very low thrust, which makes it difficult to measure thrust …
