Signal quality monitoring is an essential portion of the Global Positioning System (GPS) enterprise. Through monitoring, accuracy and normality are achieved for each satellite and signal. GPS users rely on this information from monitoring stations to ensure safe and successful operation. Traditional monitoring has been performed with hardware receivers or custom radio frequency front-ends. These receivers have known and measured impacts on the distortions of the received signal. This research aims to elucidate and quantify the amount of distortion introduced by the front-ends of general-purpose commercial off-the-shelf software-defined radio (SDR) peripherals. Monitoring stations outfitted with SDRs are more flexible and …

Implementation Of Unscented Kalman Filter-Based State Estimation For Multiple Spacecraft Using Global Positioning System Measurements, Bala Prenith Reddy Gopu May 2025

Implementation Of Unscented Kalman Filter-Based State Estimation For Multiple Spacecraft Using Global Positioning System Measurements, Bala Prenith Reddy Gopu

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents an implementation of state estimation for a drag-based rendezvous mission involving multiple chaser spacecraft and a single target, using Unscented Kalman Filtering (UKF) with Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. The implemented method combines GPS navigation solutions with UKF to provide real- time state estimates of all spacecraft involved. Nonlinear least squares method is employed to process pseudorange and pseudorange rate measurements to determine receiver states, UKF utilizes these states as measurements to estimate absolute space- craft positions and velocities. This implementation also addresses practical challenges including raw GPS measurement processing, and varying GPS satellite geometries.

Using Convolutional Neural Networks For Autonomous Drone Navigation, Joshua Jowers May 2024

Using Convolutional Neural Networks For Autonomous Drone Navigation, Joshua Jowers

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, serve various purposes, notably in military applications. Consequently, there arises a need for navigation methods impervious to intercepted signals [1]. Previous research has explored numerous solutions, including machine learning. This paper delves into a specific machine learning approach employing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to discern image locations [2]. It elucidates the conversion of a CNN model between two machine learning libraries and presents results from multiple experiments examining parameters and factors influencing the approach's efficacy. These experiments encompass testing different data sources, image quantities, and processing pipelines to gauge their …

Flight Testing Gls Approaches Enabled By Wide Area Corrections In Kerkyra, Greece, Thomas Dautermann, Thomas Ludwig Feb 2023

Flight Testing Gls Approaches Enabled By Wide Area Corrections In Kerkyra, Greece, Thomas Dautermann, Thomas Ludwig

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Many airports with a high value to commercial air traffic have spatial or budgetary constraints which prevent the installation of a precision approach system. We previously designed a low-cost precision approach system which combines the advantages of both ground-based and satellite-based augmentation systems by using a converter between them in order to allow GAST-A approach types. We installed, operated, and flight-tested such a system at Kerkyra Airport using an A320 aircraft. During these, we recorded data from a commercial multimode receiver as well as GPS raw data in order to prove the feasibility of the system. Data were analyzed using …

Ship Routing Determination By Virtual Measurements Of An Integrated System, Tsai-Hsin Chang, Jian-Qun Hou Aug 2020

Ship Routing Determination By Virtual Measurements Of An Integrated System, Tsai-Hsin Chang, Jian-Qun Hou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

According to the requirements of international maritime organization model course 7.03, electronic navigation systems are essential for project pilots. Global positioning system (GPS) is currently the most widely used electronic navigation equipment. However, because of the frequent blockages of GPS signals in complex environments, obtaining a precise and real-time position is difficult. To satisfy the requirement of effective and stable positioning of ship berthing and unberthing, another independent navigation system, inertial navigation system (INS), was adopted. In this study, we developed a 2-dimension (2D) GPS/INS-integrated system by using the constraint of a ship moving on a plane. If GPS signals …

Assessment Of Egnos Performance For Civil Aviation Flight Phase In The Edge Coverage Area, Bilal Beldjilali, Salem Kahlouche, Lahouaria Tabti Jan 2020

Assessment Of Egnos Performance For Civil Aviation Flight Phase In The Edge Coverage Area, Bilal Beldjilali, Salem Kahlouche, Lahouaria Tabti

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The performances of the navigation systems used for different flight phases especially in the landing of an aircraft must be very high. The International Civil Aviation Organization defines the standards which must meet by any navigation systems to be certified, so it can be used by civil aircraft. To achieve the level of security defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization, new augmentation systems based satellites are developed. In Europe, the EGNOS system was developed to improve both GPS and Galileo performance. In this paper the performance of the EGNOS system for civil aviation flight phase was investigated. Four parameters …

Vision-Aided Navigation For Gps-Denied Environments Using Landmark Feature Identification, Tennyson Samuel John Dec 2014

Vision-Aided Navigation For Gps-Denied Environments Using Landmark Feature Identification, Tennyson Samuel John

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In recent years, unmanned autonomous vehicles have been used in diverse applications because of their multifaceted capabilities. In most cases, the navigation systems for these vehicles are dependent on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Many applications of interest, however, entail operations in environments in which GPS is intermittent or completely denied. These applications include operations in complex urban or indoor environments as well as missions in adversarial environments where GPS might be denied using jamming technology.

This thesis investigate the development of vision-aided navigation algorithms that utilize processed images from a monocular camera as an alternative to GPS. The vision-aided …

Senior Project: Global Position Determination From Observed Relative Position Of Celestial Bodies, Michael Holmes Jun 2010

Senior Project: Global Position Determination From Observed Relative Position Of Celestial Bodies, Michael Holmes

Aerospace Engineering

A method was developed to determine the latitude and longitude of an observer based on the observed position of the Moon and several other celestial bodies. The basic principal developed dealt with the proximity of the Moon. Its relative displacement from calculated values was measured using photography by comparison with stars near the Moon. Photographs were taken from a location in San Luis Obispo at Longitude 120°35.9' and Latitude 35°13.3'. The analysis method has determined the location of the observer to a Longitude of 117°43.8'. An additional method located the observer to 36°38.7'N Latitude and 114°47.6'W Longitude.
