Mitigating Interference With Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis And Space Time Adaptive Processing, Yongjun Yoon Jun 2018

Mitigating Interference With Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis And Space Time Adaptive Processing, Yongjun Yoon

Theses and Dissertations

Phased arrays are essential to airborne ground moving target indication (GMTI), as they measure the spatial angle-of-arrival of the target, clutter, and interference signals. The spatial and Doppler (temporal) frequency is utilized by space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to separate and filter out the interference from the moving target returns. Achieving acceptable airborne GMTI performance often requires fairly large arrays, but the size, weight and power (SWAP) requirements, cost and complexity considerations often result in the use of subarrays. This yields an acceptable balance between cost and performance while lowering the system’s robustness to interference. This thesis proposes the use of …

An Exploration Of Error-Correcting Codes For Use In Noise-Prone Satellite Environments, Min W. Kang Mar 2018

An Exploration Of Error-Correcting Codes For Use In Noise-Prone Satellite Environments, Min W. Kang

Theses and Dissertations

Satellites are crucial for the modern world to function properly as they provide Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and global communication. However, the data that is stored on these satellites can be corrupted by the radiation found in space, and its bits can be improperly flipped. In the past, Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms were selected based on their strength and implemented to correct these bit flips back to their original values. This thesis seeks to determine if the strength of the FEC algorithms Reed Solomon (RS) code and Reed Solomon Product Code (RSPC) directly translates to their effectiveness. These …

Integrity Monitoring For Automated Aerial Refueling: A Stereo Vision Approach, Thomas R. Stuart Mar 2018

Integrity Monitoring For Automated Aerial Refueling: A Stereo Vision Approach, Thomas R. Stuart

Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increasingly require the capability to y autonomously in close formation including to facilitate automated aerial refueling (AAR). The availability of relative navigation measurements and navigation integrity are essential to autonomous relative navigation. Due to the potential non-availability of the global positioning system (GPS) during military operations, it is highly desirable that relative navigation can be accomplished without the use of GPS. This paper develops two algorithms designed to provide relative navigation measurements solely from a stereo image pair. These algorithms were developed and analyzed in the context of AAR using a stereo camera system modeling that …

Modeling A Space-Based Quantum Link, Alexander W. Duchane Mar 2018

Modeling A Space-Based Quantum Link, Alexander W. Duchane

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum sources and single photon detectors have improved, allowing quantum algorithms for communication, encryption, computing, and sensing to transition from theory and small-scale laboratory experiments to field experiments. One such quantum algorithm, Quantum Key Distribution, uses optical pulses to generate shared random bit strings between two locations. These shared bit strings can be turned into encryption keys to be used as a one-time-pad or integrated with symmetric encryption techniques such as the Advanced Encryption Standard. This method of key generation and encryption is resistant to future advances in quantum computing which significantly degrade the effectiveness of current asymmetric key sharing …

Design And Test Of A Uav Swarm Architecture Over A Mesh Ad-Hoc Network, Timothy J. Allen Mar 2018

Design And Test Of A Uav Swarm Architecture Over A Mesh Ad-Hoc Network, Timothy J. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a testable swarm architecture such that the swarm of UAVs collaborate as a team rather than acting as several independent vehicles. Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components were used as they were low-cost, readily available, and previously proven to work with at least two networked UAVs. Initial testing was performed via software-in-the-loop (SITL) demonstrating swarming of three simulated multirotor aircraft, then transitioned to real hardware. The architecture was then tested in an outdoor nylon netting enclosure. Command and control (C2) was provided by software implementing an enhanced version of Reynolds’ flocking rules via an onboard …

Algorithms For Small Satellite Formation Flying, Robert B. Larue

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents algorithms for spacecraft formation flying using impulsive thrust and low-thrust methods. The general circular orbit formation initial conditions are derived in terms of equinoctial elements. Physical significance of the bounded relative motion parameters is presented for the case of general circular orbits. The developed algorithms are posed in terms of equinoctial elements for a singularity-free approach. The algorithms are assessed by numerical propagation of the inertial equations of motion with J2 and drag perturbations. Methods are presented for minimizing the ΔV required for formation initialization. An examination of the performance of open-loop and closed-loop control is provided …

Optimal Trajectory Generation In A Dynamic Multi-Body Environment Using A Pseudospectral Method, Jacob A. Dahlke Mar 2018

Optimal Trajectory Generation In A Dynamic Multi-Body Environment Using A Pseudospectral Method, Jacob A. Dahlke

Theses and Dissertations

High-altitude parking orbits could provide resiliency to the military space infrastructure by providing redundancy in key assets, allowing for rapid reconstitution of underperforming satellites. When analyzing trajectories in a high-altitude regime, two-body models of Keplerian motion become less accurate since the gravitational effects of other bodies are no longer negligible. To provide a higher fidelity model of the dynamics in a high-altitude regime, a multiple-body model can be used. In the Earth-Moon system, a spacecraft operating in the high-altitude regime can be modeled with three-body dynamics. With certain simplifying assumptions, the model is called the circular-restricted three-body problem (CR3BP). The …

Navigation Using Vector And Tensor Measurements Of The Earth's Magnetic Anomaly Field, Lauren A. Mount

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the viability of using a navigation system that relies on measurements of the magnetic anomaly field as an alternative to GPS navigation. Previous research has been conducted on developing a navigation system using the intensity of the Earth's magnetic anomaly field as an alternative signal. This research focuses on using vector and tensor measurements, as opposed to scalar measurements of the anomaly field, as a means of obtaining accurate position and orientation solutions. This paper presents two navigation systems. The first uses an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) with vector measurements of the magnetic anomaly field to aid …

Effects Of Position Uncertainty On Passive Multistatic Sar Resolution Measures, Duy K. Nguyen Mar 2018

Effects Of Position Uncertainty On Passive Multistatic Sar Resolution Measures, Duy K. Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Given numerous exciting potentials including substantial cost savings, passive multistatic synthetic aperture radar (PMSAR) has been gaining more attention in the radar community. However, PMSAR research efforts such as emitters of opportunity selection thus far have not considered radar position uncertainty. Seeking to fill this knowledge gap, we run Monte Carlo trials to simulate transmitter position uncertainty and examine the effects on the multistatic resolution of radar sets of different geometries, center frequencies and bandwidths. By monitoring the 3dB contour of the multistatic point spread function, we find that the multistatic resolution worsens on average and the data spread grows …

Optimal Control Methods For Missile Evasion, Ryan W. Carr Jul 2017

Optimal Control Methods For Missile Evasion, Ryan W. Carr

Theses and Dissertations

Optimal control theory is applied to the study of missile evasion, particularly in the case of a single pursuing missile versus a single evading aircraft. It is proposed to divide the evasion problem into two phases, where the primary considerations are energy and maneuverability, respectively. Traditional evasion tactics are well documented for use in the maneuverability phase. To represent the first phase dominated by energy management, the optimal control problem may be posed in two ways, as a fixed final time problem with the objective of maximizing the final distance between the evader and pursuer, and as a free final …

Small Fixed-Wing Aerial Positioning Using Inter-Vehicle Ranging Combined With Visual Odometry, Benjamin M. Fain Mar 2017

Small Fixed-Wing Aerial Positioning Using Inter-Vehicle Ranging Combined With Visual Odometry, Benjamin M. Fain

Theses and Dissertations

There has been increasing interest in developing the ability for small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS) to be able to operate in environments where GPS is not available. This research considers the case of a larger aircraft loitering above a smaller GPS-denied SUAS. This larger aircraft is assumed to have greater resources which can overcome the GPS jamming and provide range information to the SUAS flying a mission below. This research demonstrates that using a ranging update combined with an aircraft motion model and visual odometry can greatly improve the accuracy of a SUASs estimated position in a GPS-denied environment.

Adaptive Estimation And Heuristic Optimization Of Nonlinear Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics, Joshuah A. Hess Sep 2016

Adaptive Estimation And Heuristic Optimization Of Nonlinear Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics, Joshuah A. Hess

Theses and Dissertations

For spacecraft conducting on-orbit operations, changes to the structure of the spacecraft are not uncommon. These planned or unanticipated changes in inertia properties couple with the spacecraft's attitude dynamics and typically require estimation. For systems with time-varying inertia parameters, multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) routines can be utilized for parameter and state estimates. MMAE algorithms involve constructing a bank of recursive estimators, each assuming a different hypothesis for the systems dynamics. This research has three distinct, but related, contributions to satellite attitude dynamics and estimation. In the first part of this research, MMAE routines employing parallel banks of unscented attitude …

Optimal Control Of An Uninhabited Loyal Wingman, Clay J. Humphreys Sep 2016

Optimal Control Of An Uninhabited Loyal Wingman, Clay J. Humphreys

Theses and Dissertations

As researchers strive to achieve autonomy in systems, many believe the goal is not that machines should attain full autonomy, but rather to obtain the right level of autonomy for an appropriate man-machine interaction. A common phrase for this interaction is manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T), a subset of which, for unmanned aerial vehicles, is the concept of the loyal wingman. This work demonstrates the use of optimal control and stochastic estimation techniques as an autonomous near real-time dynamic route planner for the DoD concept of the loyal wingman. First, the optimal control problem is formulated for a static threat environment and …

Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin Mar 2016

Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this project was to develop and implement algorithms to demonstrate real-time positioning of a UAV using a monocular camera combined with previously collected orthorectified imagery. Unlike previous tests, this project did not utilize a full inertial navigation system (INS) for attitude, but instead had to rely on the attitude obtained by inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) autopilots. The system consisted of primarily COTS components and open-source software, and was own over Camp Atterbury, IN for a sequence of flight tests in Fall 2015. The system obtained valid solutions over much of the flight path, identifying features in the …

Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery Mar 2016

Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery

Theses and Dissertations

A method human operated INS aiding is explored in which the pilot identifies and tracks a ground feature of unknown position over a short measurement epoch using an E/O sensor. One then refers to Visual-INS. In contrast to current research trends, a human operator is entrusted with visually tracking the ground feature. In addition, a less conventional measurement linearization technique is applied to generate “converted” measurements. A linear regression algorithm is then applied to the converted measurements providing an estimate of the INS horizontal velocity error and accelerometer biases. At the completion of the measurement epoch, the INS is corrected …

Evaluation Of Verification Approaches Applied To A Nonlinear Control System, Kerianne H. Gross Mar 2016

Evaluation Of Verification Approaches Applied To A Nonlinear Control System, Kerianne H. Gross

Theses and Dissertations

As the demand for increasingly complex and autonomous systems grows, designers may consider computational and artificial intelligence methods for more advanced, re- active control. While the performance gained by such increasingly intelligent systems may be superior to traditional control techniques, the lack of transparency in the systems and opportunity for emergent behavior limits their application in the field. New verification and validation methods must be developed to ensure the output of such controllers do not put the system or any people interacting with it in danger. This challenge was highlighted by the former Air Force Chief Scientist in his 2010 …

The pilot will track a ground feature with the E/O system, while the aircraft is on autopilot holding constant airspeed, altitude, and heading during an INS aiding session. The ground feature measurements from the E/O system and the INS output form measurements …

On The Integration Of Medium Wave Infrared Cameras For Vision-Based Navigation, Justin S. Tharp Mar 2015

On The Integration Of Medium Wave Infrared Cameras For Vision-Based Navigation, Justin S. Tharp

Theses and Dissertations

The ubiquitous nature of GPS has fostered its widespread integration of navigation into a variety of applications, both civilian and military. One alternative to ensure continued flight operations in GPS-denied environments is vision-aided navigation, an approach that combines visual cues from a camera with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to estimate the navigation states of a moving body. The majority of vision-based navigation research has been conducted in the electro-optical (EO) spectrum, which experiences limited operation in certain environments. The aim of this work is to explore how such approaches extend to infrared imaging sensors. In particular, it examines the …

Expected Position Error For An Onboard Satellite Gps Receiver, Anthony S. Williams Mar 2015

Expected Position Error For An Onboard Satellite Gps Receiver, Anthony S. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation provides ranging information that delivers inexpensive, high precision positioning for terrestrial users. Satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) can use an onboard GPS receiver resulting in meter-level navigation solution accuracy. There are limitations to using GPS for positioning for satellites above LEO. The number of GPS satellites who's signal can be received decreases as the receivers altitude approaches that of the GPS constellation. Above the GPS constellation, the available GPS signals for ranging will originate from satellites on the opposite side of Earth. This research calculates the available GPS signals to the receiver and …

Error Characterization Of Flight Trajectories Reconstructed Using Structure From Motion, Daniel C. Alix

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort assessed the accuracy of Structure from Motion (SFM) algorithms in replicating aircraft fight trajectories. Structure from Motion techniques can be used to estimate aircraft trajectory by determining the position and pose of an aircraft mounted camera from a sequential series of images taken during flight. An algorithm is proposed and implemented that successfully reconstructed aircraft trajectory using only a known starting position and a sequential series of images. The error in and reliability of the algorithm was found to be a function of image resolution as well as the amount of overlap and angular separation between sequential …

Optimal Recovery Trajectories For Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto Gcas), Angela W. Suplisson Mar 2015

Optimal Recovery Trajectories For Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto Gcas), Angela W. Suplisson

Theses and Dissertations

The USAF's F-16 Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto GCAS) uses a single pre-planned roll to wings- level and 5-g pull-up to meet the operational requirements of being both aggressive and timely, meaning that extremely agile avoidance maneuvers will be executed at the last second to avoid the ground. There currently exists no similar Auto GCAS for manned military heavy' aircraft with lower climb performance such as transport, tanker, or bomber aircraft. This research proposes a new optimal control approach to the ground collision avoidance problem for heavy aircraft by mapping the aggressive and timely requirements of the automatic recovery …
