Ramjet Combustion Chamber, Paul Cameron Stone
Ramjet Combustion Chamber, Paul Cameron Stone
Aerospace Engineering
A ramjet combustion chamber is designed and some initial assembly fabrication and test completed as a component of a ramjet graduate project for California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Supersonic Wind Tunnel. The combustor design is driven by a theoretical model created by a Cal Poly graduate student, Harrison Sykes. Temperature, pressure, and fuel flow will be measured.

Integrated Collision Avoidance System Sensor Evaluation Final Design Project, Alex F. Graebe, Bridgette S. Kimball, Drew T. Lavoise
Mechanical Engineering
Following the development of Aircraft Collision Avoidance Technology (ACAT) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a need arose to transition the life-saving technology to aid the general aviation community. Considering the realistic cost of implementation, it was decided that the technology should be adapted to function on any smartphone, using that device as an end-to-end solution to sense, process, and alert the pilot to imminent threats. In September of 2012, the SAS (Sense and Survive) Senior Project Team at California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo was assigned the task of using smartphone technology to accurately sense …

The Application Of Advanced Composites For The Construction Of Commercial Transport Aircraft, Mark D. Severson
The Application Of Advanced Composites For The Construction Of Commercial Transport Aircraft, Mark D. Severson
Graduate Student Works
This individual Capstone project examined and evaluated current industry methods of testing, certification, and maintenance of advanced composite materials for the construction of commercial transport aircraft and the FAA regulations governing their use. The project critically compared and contrasted existing FAA standards and regulations governing the testing, certification, and maintenance of advanced composites for commercial transport aircraft structural applications with current industry practices to determine whether there were any areas of conflict between the two in order to accept or reject that current testing, certification, and maintenance procedures for advanced composites used in primary and secondary commercial transport aircraft structures …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Stol Performance Of Cal Poly's Amelia In The Nfac, Jonathan Andrew Lichtwardt
An Experimental Investigation Of The Stol Performance Of Cal Poly's Amelia In The Nfac, Jonathan Andrew Lichtwardt
Master's Theses
Results from Cal Poly's recent wind tunnel test, during the Winter of 2011-2012, in the 40- by 80-foot test section at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) at NASA Ames Research Center are presented. AMELIA, the Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics, is the first full-span, cruise efficient, short take-off and landing (CESTOL) model incorporating leading- and trailing-edge blowing wing circulation control and over-the-wing mounted turbine propulsion simulators (TPS) to date. Testing of the 10 foot span model proved successful and was the result of a 5 year NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Program Research Announcement. The test generated extensive …
Nonlinearity Index Analysis Of Periodic-Chaotic Stall-Spin Aircraft Motion, Daniel Paul Tapolcai
Nonlinearity Index Analysis Of Periodic-Chaotic Stall-Spin Aircraft Motion, Daniel Paul Tapolcai
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis explores the application of nonlinearity index theory to the nature of stalling and spinning aircraft motions. Nonlinear dynamic phenomena related to stall and spin have been a concern to flight engineers and pilots for generations. Considerable past work has been directed to detect and understand the cause and nature of these phenomena. Methods such as bifurcation analysis, Volterra expansion series, and nonlinear simulation are a few of the nonlinear approaches developed to study this topic. Traditionally, however, linear analysis is the most widely used approach for studying aircraft dynamical behavior under a given set of acceptable conditions. This …

Enabling Rapid Conceptual Design Using Geometry-Based Multi-Fidelity Models In Vsp, Joel Brian Belben
Enabling Rapid Conceptual Design Using Geometry-Based Multi-Fidelity Models In Vsp, Joel Brian Belben
Master's Theses
The purpose of this work is to help bridge the gap between aircraft conceptual design and analysis. Much work is needed, but distilling essential characteristics from a design and collecting them in an easily accessible format that is amenable to use by inexpensive analysis tools is a significant contribution to this goal. Toward that end, four types of reduced-fidelity or degenerate geometric representations have been defined and implemented in VSP, a parametric geometry modeler. The four types are degenerate surface, degenerate plate, degenerate stick, and degenerate point, corresponding to three-, two-, one-, and zero- dimensional representations of underlying geometry, respectively. …

Senior Project Report - Doctest, Stephen Weessies
Senior Project Report - Doctest, Stephen Weessies
Computer Engineering
DocTest is a program that, simply put, allows a programmer or user to document STANAG 4586 (a standard for unmanned aerial vehicle interoperability) messages and test the vehicle system at Lockheed Martin [5]. The program is extensible to allow for further development aiding our software team to do what they do best and not get bogged down in tedious but necessary documentation. DocTest is also used to aid in testing, keeping track of the issues and bugs found and creating a document that captures each issue so an issue is not missed or forgotten. This program was made for use …
Design And Performance Of Circulation Control Geometries, Rory Martin Golden
Design And Performance Of Circulation Control Geometries, Rory Martin Golden
Master's Theses
With the pursuit of more advanced and environmentally-friendly technologies of today’s society, the airline industry has been pushed further to investigate solutions that will reduce airport noise and congestion, cut down on emissions, and improve the overall performance of aircraft. These items directly influence airport size (runway length), flight patterns in the community surrounding the airport, cruise speed, and many other aircraft design considerations which are setting the requirements for next generation aircraft. Leading the research in this movement is NASA, which has set specific goals for the next generation regional airliners and has categorized the designs that meet the …

Robust Parafoil Terminal Guidance Using Massively Parallel Processing, Jonathan Rogers, Nathan Slegers
Robust Parafoil Terminal Guidance Using Massively Parallel Processing, Jonathan Rogers, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Terminal guidance of autonomous parafoils is a difficult problem in which wind uncertainty and system underactuation are major challenges. Existing strategies almost exclusively use impact error as the criterion for optimality. Practical airdrop systems, however, must also include other criteria that maybe even more important than impact error for some missions, such as ground speed at impact or constraints imposed by drop zones with restrictions on flight patterns. Furthermore, existing guidance schemes determine terminal trajectories using deterministic wind information and may result in a solution that works in ideal wind but may be sensitive to variations. The work described here …
