United States Drone Laws, Jacob Crittenden Oct 2017

United States Drone Laws, Jacob Crittenden

Student Works

The purpose of this Directed Study was to investigate and compile the drone laws that exist within the United States, both on the federal level and for each individual state. The federal laws are directed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under laws that pertain to “Unmanned Aircraft Systems” (UAS) and are relatively new. Most states have further regulations on UAS that they have passed. Most of these laws are in place to protect public safety and privacy, but some also prohibit certain locations of flight and certain modifications that might be made to the platform. State laws that limit …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav): Flight Performance, Fevens Louis Jean

Student Works

It is important that when measuring the sideslip angle and angles of attack during flight test performance of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), to fully understand that the Angles of attack and sideslip are parameters that aid in determining the safety of the flight as they improve stability and control of the aircraft. The disadvantage of the measurement of these angles using this method is low accuracy of measurement due to friction to the potentiometers in connection with the vanes. To counter this, a new sensing method was developed to minimize friction and collect more accurate data. The method is …

Performance Analysis Of A Coaxial Helicopter In Hover And Forward Flight, Stanrich D. Fernandes May 2017

Performance Analysis Of A Coaxial Helicopter In Hover And Forward Flight, Stanrich D. Fernandes

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The performance of a coaxial rotor system has been analyzed by establishing a proper basis of comparison between a conventional single rotor and coaxial rotor. An attempt has also been made to better understand the complicated aerodynamic interactions associated with coaxial rotor wakes by using a free-vortex methodology (FVM). The FVM is a Lagrangian-based wake convection methodology, which solves for the evolution of the vortical wake produced by the rotor blades under the influence of an external flow. The extent to which the two rotors interact with each other was found to be highly dependent on the inter-rotor spacing. To …

Battery Centric Serial Hybrid Aircraft Performance And Design Space, Lenny Gartenberg

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The design space and flight envelope of a battery centric serial hybrid aircraft has been analytically derived. The formulation assumes cruising flight only and all energy available is used. The flight envelope can be generated for any conventional propeller driven serial hybrid aircraft. The advantageous combination of an electric motor and controllable-pitch electric propeller was also explored. The results are used to be able to control efficiency and noise at constant thrust and therefore constant airspeed. Manufacturer provided electric motor and propeller data is used for efficiency purposes. Since the electric motor is virtually silent compared to the propeller, published …

Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Operations Into The National Airspace System, Benjamin Cook, Holly Hughes, Kyle Wilkerson, Allison Little

Discovery Day - Prescott

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are expected to dominate the National Airspace System (NAS) in the near future. One particular barrier preventing the integration of unmanned aircraft into the NAS is the lack of standardized procedures for distinguishing and communicating with remote UAS operators. In preparation for adopting unmanned flight operations into a complex control system, it is important to identify solutions to effectively control UAS in the NAS. To achieve simultaneous safe manned and unmanned aircraft operations in the NAS, the Joint UAS and ATC Team (JUAT) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) are developing a system that could be used …

Collision Avoidance And Navigation Of Uas Using Vision-Based Proportional Navigation, Matthew J. Clark Mar 2017

Collision Avoidance And Navigation Of Uas Using Vision-Based Proportional Navigation, Matthew J. Clark

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Electro-optical devices have received considerable interest due to their light weight, low cost, and low algorithm requirements with respect to computational power. In this thesis, vision-based guidance laws are developed to provide sense and avoid capabilities for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in complex environments with multiple static and dynamic collision threats. These collision avoidance guidance laws are based on the principle of proportional navigation (Pro-Nav), which states that a UAV is on a collision course with another vehicle or object if the line-of-sight (LOS) angles to the object remain constant. The guidance laws are designed for use with monocular …

Our work aims to conceptualize and design UAVaaS for commercial applications. Specifically, a cloud-provided orchestration framework that allows multi-tenant UAVs to easily serve multiple heterogenous clients at once and …

2d Aeroacoustic Analysis Of Flow In The Flame Trench, Meghan Pokorski May 2016

2d Aeroacoustic Analysis Of Flow In The Flame Trench, Meghan Pokorski

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

We present here a methodology for using the commercial software ANSYSFLUENT to predict the acoustic field associated with Space-Launch System (SLS). We consider a two-dimensional model of flame deflector, and flame trench. The ANSYS code is then used to simulate the internal flow. Both the steady state case is considered along with other cases where the inflow has a harmonic component. A Ffowcs-Williams Hawking (FWH) surface is then constructed within the computational domain to use the computed flow fluctuations to obtain the acoustic field. The acoustic data was then compared to the experimental data.

When using the ANSYS code for …

Aerodynamic Trade Study Of Compound Helicopter Concepts, Julian Roche

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The relative performance attributes of compound helicopter concepts have been examined, including their potential for meeting the requirements of several challenging mission profiles. For each concept, which included lift and/or propulsive compounding, a suite of aerodynamic performance models was developed using energy methods. In the case of a lift-compounded concept, an aerodynamic model representing the force interaction effects of the main rotor wake with the wing was also developed. Models of a conventional helicopter and of a tiltrotor were implemented as well, and the results used as a datum for comparison. In each case, the predictive capabilities of the model …

Slipstream Measurements Of Small-Scale Propellers At Low Reynolds Numbers, Robert W. Deters, Gavin K. Ananda, Michael S. Selig Jun 2015

Slipstream Measurements Of Small-Scale Propellers At Low Reynolds Numbers, Robert W. Deters, Gavin K. Ananda, Michael S. Selig

Publications

The continuing growth in the use of small UAVs has required the need to more fully understand the propellers that power them. Part of this understanding is the behavior of the propeller slipstream. Using a 7-hole probe, the slipstreams of several small-scale propellers (diameters of 4.2, 5, and 9 in) were measured in both static (V∞ = 0) and advancing-flow (V∞ > 0) conditions at several locations downstream. For static conditions, as the slipstream expanded downstream, the maximum values of the axial and swirl velocities decreased. The general shape of the static slipstream was also found to be nearly the same …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav) Propulsion Research: Conceptual Studies Of “Ultra-Compact Shaft-Less Jet Engines” For Next Generation Uavs, Tyler Eiguren, Trevor Douglas, Tre Buchanan

Publications

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are becoming more commonly used in today’s society, ranging anywhere from military applications to entertainment for enthusiasts and hobbyists. The complexity of current generation UAV’s propulsive devices, based upon a scaled turbine engine and separate gas & electrically powered rotating fan blades, require regular maintenance for every 24 hours of flight. This added cost coupled with necessary intricate machinery deters UAV designers from such engines, leaving a void in current production. Our research team believes that by combining a simplified alternative compression & combustion process with an electrically driven fan, we can develop an energy efficient, reliable, …

Comparison Of Aircraft Tire Wear With Initial Wheel Rotational Speed, Abdurrhman A. Alroqi, Weiji Wang Mar 2015

Comparison Of Aircraft Tire Wear With Initial Wheel Rotational Speed, Abdurrhman A. Alroqi, Weiji Wang

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The impact an aircraft has on its tires when it lands has been problematic practically since the invention of the airplane. Upon touchdown, the tires frequently smoke as rubber burns off and tire material is worn away while the tires slip up to a steady rolling speed. To minimise tire slip, torque or spin mechanisms could be added to each tire assembly to accelerate the tire to match the landing speed. Patents have been registered since the 1940s to improve tire safety and performance, decrease the substantial wear that results from every landing, and save airline companies the cost of …

Aircraft De-Icing System Using Thermal Conductive Fibers, Min Soon Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The accumulation of ice on the leading edges of aircraft wing poses complications for flight control as drag is increased with a tendency for higher relative turbulence over the wing. Pre-emptive and reactive ice removal techniques have been employed in the past by electromechanical, thermal, chemical and pneumatic methods. In this thesis, a carbon fiber fabric is utilized as a heating de-icer for composites aircraft wing surface structures. Two prototypes are constructed, tested to generate temperature profiles, and an appropriate heating voltage is selected for effective de-icing via distinct avenues of heating system configurations. The heat transfer efficiency of the …
