Thermal Management With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Under Extreme Applications, Devon Hardy
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A unique challenge in thermal system design is minimizing the power required to operate cooling systems while maintaining effective heat removal. Traditional cooling systems utilize single-phase fluids where the heat transfer mechanisms are well understood. To meet a variety of cooling demands, a range of technologies are available, including microchannel forced convection, jet impingement, porous media, nanofluids, pin fin arrays, and film cooling, each offering distinct advantages and limitations. While the performance of single- or two-phase cooling systems are generally predictable, in extreme thermal environments, new cooling solutions are needed to improve overall system efficiency and reliability.

Numerical Study On Flow Separation And Performance Characteristics Of Slot Nozzle, Chase Charpentier
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The altitude compensating nozzle (ACN) is a type of rocket nozzle or engine that tries to minimize the negative effects of overexpansion at low altitudes. There are many forms of ACN's but most of them are heavier than traditional bell nozzles, alter the geometry of the nozzle, which requires extensive research into optimizing the new geometry, or require complex systems that can lead to structural, heating, or material problems. Out of the ACN's, the slot nozzle is a passive ACN that builds upon the bell nozzle and requires no additional weight or complex systems.
This slot nozzle is comprised of …
Perturbation Solution Of Air-Water Mixture For Jet Noise Reduction, Juan Felipe Uribe Cifuentes
Perturbation Solution Of Air-Water Mixture For Jet Noise Reduction, Juan Felipe Uribe Cifuentes
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This work investigates passive jet-noise mitigation using externally positioned air–water curtains that attenuate radiated sound without altering the underlying jet dynamics. Two classes of multiphase media are examined: a gaseous carrier phase containing dispersed liquid droplets, and a liquid carrier phase containing entrained air bubbles. For both systems, suspended and dispersed regimes are represented through a generalized perturbation formulation derived from the volume-averaged multiphase equations, incorporating finite volume fractions, interphase momentum coupling, and slip between phases. Analytical and numerical solutions demonstrate that acoustic attenuation is primarily governed by dispersed-phase diameter, volume fraction, and excitation frequency, with additional sensitivity to phase-interaction …

Heat Transfer In Tightly Packed Cylinder Arrays, Martin Kovachev
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Cylindrical arrays with a cross flow are commonly used for heat transfer augmentation within an internal channel. In most applications, the cylinders have a spacing of over 2 diameters (2D) between their center points in both the lateral and downstream directions. One option for battery thermal management in hybrid/electric aviation is to use cylindrical batteries packed in arrays with an applied cross flow. In the context of aviation, it is important to maximize space and weight savings. Tightly packing these cylinder arrays with a spacing of under 2D in both directions would save on both of these yet have not …
Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota
Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Flow over an open cavity has a dynamically complex flowfield, generating pressure fluctuations that can amplify shear stress and cause structural damage to the stores within it and the aircraft as a whole. These pressure loads are linked to large-scale resonant shear layer phenomena. Consequently, it is crucial to establish this link by characterizing the large-scale flow events conditional upon pressure measurements to improve the prediction and control of the detrimental pressure fluctuations. In this study, a link between the pressure measurements (to control) and large-scale shear layer events (to actuate) will be established using a combination of two data-driven …

Heat Transfer To Arrays Of Oscillating Impingement Jets, Alex Q. Clay
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In gas turbine engines, the desire to increase turbine entry temperatures has become more relevant in order to increase engine efficiency. However, materials used in these engines can only withstand temperatures that are so high. Because of this, the ability to cool hot section components will always limit operating temperatures. Impingement cooling jets have become a common way of cooling due to the high rates of heat transfer that can be achieved. However, previous research has shown that the interaction of impingement jets with cylinder wake can improve the intensity and uniformity of heat transfer. The goal of this study …

Conceptual Design Methodology For The Fan-In-Wing Vtol Aircraft, Brock Steinfeldt
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The Fan-In-Wing (FIW) aircraft concept is one of the most compelling solutions for missions demanding jet-like cruise speeds and Vertical TakeOff and Landing (VTOL) capability. However, despite years of interest and documented improvements in lift-fan technology, there exists little in the way of an adequate theory for conceptual design of a fan-in-wing aircraft. To address this issue, a general conceptual design methodology has been developed as a source of guidance for the FIW designer. Through this work, the top-level requirements ranking the fan-in-wing concept above other VTOL aircraft have been defined, while a cross-comparison between the FIW concept and conventional …

Adaptive Control Of An Aeroelastic System For Active Flutter Suppression And Disturbance Rejection, Patrick Sterling Downs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The future of aircraft design strives for lighter weight, more aerodynamically efficient structures. These improvements may come with the drawback of increased structural flexibility and elevated aeroelastic effects, often resulting in a lower flutter speed. This motivates the implementation of advanced control methods to control aeroelastic systems over a range of flight conditions, suppress and delay the onset of flutter, and compensate for disturbances, actuator dynamics, and unmodeled nonlinear dynamics.
This dissertation first develops a novel method for constructing time-domain simulation models of two and three-dimensional aeroelastic systems, resulting in models that are suitable for the implementation of state-space control …
