Construction Of Naca 66-415 Nlf Composite Wing For Acoustic Turbulence Testing, Scott Sawyer, Sean Stewart Jun 2011

Construction Of Naca 66-415 Nlf Composite Wing For Acoustic Turbulence Testing, Scott Sawyer, Sean Stewart

Aerospace Engineering

A design is developed for a Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing, to be used at California Polytechnic State University for acoustic turbulence testing. Composite materials are used to produce high-quality surface finishes necessary for laminar flow. A design for the test apparatus is presented and justified. A manufacturing procedure is proposed for the carbon fiber skin, using Vacuum Resin Infusion (VRI). This procedure is tested on a scaled part with satisfactory results; lessons learned are discovered and integrated into the final manufacturing process. The test section has been fit to the Cal Poly wind tunnel, but full implementation has not …

Extension To Multiple Species Of A Two-Equation Turbulence Model For High Speed Flows, Martin Horvath Jul 2010

Extension To Multiple Species Of A Two-Equation Turbulence Model For High Speed Flows, Martin Horvath

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The Wilcox (2006) k-co turbulence model has been extended to multiple species and implemented in a CFD code for high speed flows using the Steger-Warming flux-vector splitting scheme. The model was chosen because compressibility corrections are not required, nor are viscous damping factors or wall functions to produce the law of the wall, and it has previously been validated for approximately one hundred test cases ranging from incompressible to hypersonic flow regimes. Initial validation cases using first-order accuracy have been performed, including a Mach 2.5 flow past a backward-facing step and a Mach 2.85 flow into a 24° compression corner. …

Experimental Study Of The Three-Stream Scalar Mixing In A Turbulent Coaxial Jet, Matthew Dinger May 2009

Experimental Study Of The Three-Stream Scalar Mixing In A Turbulent Coaxial Jet, Matthew Dinger

All Theses

In the present study we investigate three-stream scalar mixing in a turbulent coaxial jet. In
this flow the center jet and the annulus, consisting of acetone-doped air and ethylene respectively, are
mixed with the co-flow air. A unique aspect of this study compared to previous studies of three-scalar
mixing is that two of the scalars (the center jet and air) are separated from the third (annulus);
therefore, this flow better approximates the mixing process in a nonpremixed turbulent reactive
flow. Planar laser-indiced fluorescence and Rayleigh scattering are employed to measure the mass
fractions of the acetone-doped air and ethylene, respectively. …

Computational And Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Structure And Vortex Dynamics In The Wake Of A Formula 1 Tire, John Axerio, Gianluca Iaccarino, Emin Issakhanian, Chris Elkins, John Eaton Jan 2009

Computational And Experimental Investigation Of The Flow Structure And Vortex Dynamics In The Wake Of A Formula 1 Tire, John Axerio, Gianluca Iaccarino, Emin Issakhanian, Chris Elkins, John Eaton

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

The flowfield around a 60% scale stationary Formula 1 tire in contact with the ground in a closed wind tunnel was examined experimentally in order to assess the accuracy of different turbulence modeling techniques. The results of steady RANS and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) were compared with PIV data, which was obtained within the same project. The far wake structure behind the wheel was dominated by two strong counter-rotating vortices. The locations of the vortex cores, extracted from the LES and PIV data as well as computed using different RANS models, showed that the LES predictions are closest to the …

Experimental Study Of The Frequency Response Of A Hot Film Anemometer, Ashish Tamhane Oct 2008

Experimental Study Of The Frequency Response Of A Hot Film Anemometer, Ashish Tamhane

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This endeavor was motivated by the need to accurately quantify wind tunnel turbulence, a component of flow quality. The use of spheres and cones to find a turbulence correction factor has been mentioned in the literature but these methods are indirect approaches. To measure the amplitude and spectra of the velocity fluctuations, the hot wire anemometer is the only reliable instrument. A fiber-film sensor, which is similar in operation but with more mechanical rigidity, may be preferred over a hot wire owing to its robustness. In this work, the frequency response characteristics of the hot fiber-film sensor are studied.

The …

A Design Of Experiments Approach To Deck Flow Characterization On An Aircraft Carrier, Yugapriya Sivanesan Wing Jul 2007

A Design Of Experiments Approach To Deck Flow Characterization On An Aircraft Carrier, Yugapriya Sivanesan Wing

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A wind tunnel model of an aircraft carrier was used to make air wake measurements. Particle image velocimetry measurements of turbulence intensity were made on a center plane intersecting the angled deck of the aircraft carrier. The factors of interest for the study were model pitch, yaw, island location, and island type. Two island types were used, a representative shape of current designs and an ideal streamlined airfoil shape. Each factor was studied at two levels in order to provide linear models using a Design of Experiments factorial design. From the data for each experimental combination, regression models for turbulence …

Experimental Characterization Of Turbulent Flow Around Cylinder Arrays, Adam D. Harder Mar 2007

Experimental Characterization Of Turbulent Flow Around Cylinder Arrays, Adam D. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

This research was done as part of an effort to develop alternative fire suppressant technologies for aircraft engine nacelles. A circular cylinder array was designed, built, and placed in the AFIT roll-around low speed wind tunnel to model generic clutter inside an engine nacelle. A turbulence grid was fabricated to enable measurements of the effects of turbulence level, independent of airspeed, on the flow over different model configurations. The wind tunnel test section was 12 inches wide x 12 inches high x 24 inches long. Pressure differential measurements were taken on various cylinder configurations. The configurations included one cylinder as …

Validation Of Turbulence Models In The Beggar Code For Unsteady Flow, Kevin G. Storm Mar 2005

Validation Of Turbulence Models In The Beggar Code For Unsteady Flow, Kevin G. Storm

Theses and Dissertations

Validation of the turbulence models in the CFD code Beggar for unsteady turbulent flow are discussed. Six validation cases of the code are considered, three cases with the intent of validating the code without the turbulence model and three cases to validate the turbulence model itself. Finally, a more realistic simulation of a simplified store is examined. The turbulence models considered are the Baldwin-Lomax, Spalart-Allmaras, and a DES model. The conclusions made deal with necessary prerequisites to properly simulating unsteady turbulent flow and model selection. The prerequisites necessary in the Beggar code are a second order temporal discretization and the …

Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Stability Across A Compression Corner, Hongwu Zhao Jul 2003

Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Stability Across A Compression Corner, Hongwu Zhao

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Stability of a hypersonic boundary-layer over a compression corner was investigated numerically. The three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillating (ArENO) shock capturing scheme to study the shock wave and boundary-layer interactions. The boundary-layer stability was studied in three distinct regions: upstream of the separation region, inside the separation region and downstream of the separation region. After the mean flow field was computed, linear stability theory was employed to predict the unstable disturbance modes in different flow regions and also to find the most amplified disturbance frequency across the compression corner. Gortler instability computations were …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Vortex Breakdown For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Jacob A. Freeman Mar 2003

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Vortex Breakdown For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Jacob A. Freeman

Theses and Dissertations

Using the commercially available FLUENT 3-D flow field solver, this research effort investigated vortex breakdown over a delta wing at high angle of attack (α) in preparation for investigation of active control of vortex breakdown using steady, along- core blowing. A flat delta-shaped half-wing with sharp leading edge and sweep angle of 60° was modeled at α=18° in a wind tunnel at Mach 0.04 and Reynolds number of 3.4 x 105. A hybrid (combination of structured and unstructured) numerical mesh was generated to accommodate blowing ports on the wing surface. Results for cases without and with along-core blowing …

The Combined Effects Of Freestream Turbulence, Pressure Gradients, And Surface Roughness On Turbine Aerodynamics, Christine P. Ellering Mar 2002

The Combined Effects Of Freestream Turbulence, Pressure Gradients, And Surface Roughness On Turbine Aerodynamics, Christine P. Ellering

Theses and Dissertations

This work used scaled facsimiles of real turbine blade surfaces to characterize correlations between turbine blade roughness, freestream turbulence, pressure gradients and skin friction (Cf). Addition of roughness caused Cf to increase: up to 300% for the roughest surface. Addition of freestream turbulence resulted in 125% increase for the same surface. The combined effects showed increases up to 380%. Although decreasing roughness, freestream turbulence, and Reynolds number resulted in less dramatic results, it was concluded that the Cf increases due to combined effects were consistently higher than their corresponding sum of the parts. The combined effects of roughness and pressure …

Effect Of High Free Stream Turbulence On Film Cooling Using Double Row Of 30° Slant-Hole Injectors, Lilith I. Sorensen Mar 1998

Effect Of High Free Stream Turbulence On Film Cooling Using Double Row Of 30° Slant-Hole Injectors, Lilith I. Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

In this study free stream turbulence levels from 7.3% to 17.8% are applied to film cooling over a flat plate with two rows of 30° slant holes using a wall jet as the main stream air supply and source of turbulence. Blowing ratios are varied from 0.25 to 2.0 and free stream velocities at injection range from 10 m/s to 85 m/s. A constant density ratio of 1.07 is kept throughout the experiment. Results show that for different magnitudes of blowing ratio free stream turbulence has a different influence on effectiveness. At the forward stations, where blow off was present …

Analysis Of Turbulence Models As Applied To Two- And Three-Dimensional Injection Flows, Clarence R. Chenault Mar 1998

Analysis Of Turbulence Models As Applied To Two- And Three-Dimensional Injection Flows, Clarence R. Chenault

Theses and Dissertations

A steady state solution of the full, three dimensional Favre averaged Navier Stokes equations, coupled with a second order Reynolds stress turbulence model (RSTM) and an eddy viscosity model were used to numerically simulate oblique injection into supersonic flow. Numerical results were compared to experimental data and the turbulence models were evaluated for accurate prediction of thermomechanical mean flow variables, Reynolds stresses, flowfield shock structure and boundary layer phenomena. The RSTM simulation resulted in physically consistent and accurate predictions for the mean flow and turbulent quantities. Simulations with the eddy viscosity model resulted in non-physical and inconsistent turbulence predictions. RSTM …

Experimental Investigation Of Non-Adiabatic Supersonic Slot Injection Into A Supersonic Cross-Flow, Kelly C. Tucker Dec 1995

Experimental Investigation Of Non-Adiabatic Supersonic Slot Injection Into A Supersonic Cross-Flow, Kelly C. Tucker

Theses and Dissertations

Turbulence and mean flow measurements were acquired downstream of a normal, supersonic (M=1.6), two-dimensional, slot injection into Mach 3.0 flow (Re/m = 15x106). Two non-adiabatic cases Ti/T = 1.11 and Ti/T = 0.93) were studied. Multiple overheat anemometry and conventional mean flow analysis, as well as shadowgraph and schlieren photography, were utilized to study the turbulent mixing layer. The mean flow data included the Pitot, cone-static, and Mach number profiles. The measured turbulence data included shear stresses, mass flux, total temperature turbulence intensities, and turbulent heat fluxes. The temperature and density variation …

Flow Visualization Of A Turbulent Shear Flow Using An Optical Wavefront Sensor, Daniel W. Jewell Dec 1994

Flow Visualization Of A Turbulent Shear Flow Using An Optical Wavefront Sensor, Daniel W. Jewell

Theses and Dissertations

The research reported here investigated the use of a shearing interferometer (SI) wavefront sensor to determine the effects of shear-layer turbulence on an optical wavefront. A collimated helium-neon laser beam was propagated through a plane shear-layer produced by mixing helium and nitrogen at different velocities. Since the gases have different indices of refraction, the optical wavefront was distorted by different amounts by each gas. The SI measured the wavefront slope across the sampled area of the wavefront. The shear-layer was viewed from two orthogonal directions. This document contains shadow graphs, interference patterns imaged by each of the SI's six cameras, …

Turbulence Scales In The Passage Of A Linear Turbine Cascade, James L. Acree Dec 1990

Turbulence Scales In The Passage Of A Linear Turbine Cascade, James L. Acree

Theses and Dissertations

Convective heat transfer in a turbine cascade is examined for turbulence effects. Turbulence in the free stream is varied by injection of air through a jet-grid device upstream of the cascade. Pressure and flow patterns on the blade surface, and flow velocity in two components, are examined to determine the effect of the jet-grid. Velocity and velocity fluctuation in two components are measured. Local turbulence scales through the cascade passage are determined, and local turbulent energy dissipation rate is determined. Results indicate injection of air through the jet-grid changes the angle of incidence, and therefore changes the surface pressures and …

System For Boundary Layer Control Through Pulsed Heating Of A Strip Heater, Milton E. Franke, Lawrence Kudelka

AFIT Patents

A system is described for controlling the transition of laminar/turbulent flow at a surface which comprises a thin narrow strip heater disposed adjacent the surface and extending substantially transversely of the flow of the air stream thereacross, the heater being resiliently held in tension on or in closely spaced relationship to the surface, and a power source operatively connected to the heater for applying pulsed voltage of preselected amplitude and frequency to the heater.
