Urban Flow And Small Unmanned Aerial System Operations In The Built Environment, Kevin A. Adkins
Urban Flow And Small Unmanned Aerial System Operations In The Built Environment, Kevin A. Adkins
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has put forth a set of regulations (Part 107) that govern small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) operations. These regulations restrict unmanned aircraft (UA) from flying over people and their operation to within visual line of sight (VLOS). However, as new applications for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are discovered, their capabilities improve, and regulations evolve, there is an increasing desire to undertake urban operations, such as urban air mobility, package delivery, infrastructure inspection, and surveillance. This built environment poses new weather hazards that include enhanced wind shear and turbulence. The smaller physical dimensions, lower mass and …
Low Level Turbulence Detection For Airports, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
Low Level Turbulence Detection For Airports, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Abstract—— Low level wind shear and turbulence present a serious safety risk to aircraft during the approach, landing and take-off phases. Despite many advances in on-board and ground based warning systems. Wind shear remains a formidable force that coupled with a microburst can overpower any aircraft. Aviation reports have concluded that pilots need to have improved information in relation to tailwinds, wind shear and wind variations on approach and during the landing phases. Low level wind shear continues to cause disruption, delays and contribute to aircraft crashes. As recently as 2016, two Boeing aircraft crashed while attempting a Go-around …
A Numerical And Experimental Evaluation Of The Turbulent Heat Flux In A Heated Jet In Crossflow, Michael R. Borghi Jr.
A Numerical And Experimental Evaluation Of The Turbulent Heat Flux In A Heated Jet In Crossflow, Michael R. Borghi Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The injection of fully-developed turbulent heated air from a tube into a cooler turbulent duct flow is examined, as an analogy to film cooled turbine blades. Scale Resolving Simulations (SRS) are used to examine the flow numerically. A Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) methodology is examined but found to be ineffective at correctly capturing the physics of the flow. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) numerical model is developed and applied in which tube and duct turbulence inflow effects are emulated using a divergence-free synthetic eddy method (SEM). The LES sensitivity to the synthetic inflow turbulence is examined with a series of …
Three-Dimensional Wall Effects In A Scramjet Cavity Flameholder, Evan P. Oren
Three-Dimensional Wall Effects In A Scramjet Cavity Flameholder, Evan P. Oren
Theses and Dissertations
Scramjets, or supersonic combustion ramjets, are a key component for the development of powered hypersonic vehicles. The flameholding strategy used in this engine creates a recirculation region by creating a cavity in one side of the combustor. This highly unsteady region is difficult to interrogate through conventional means. A novel optical observation technique called hyperspectral imaging has been developed to examine the scramjet combustion chamber. The hyperspectral camera is capable of generating an interferogram at hundreds to thousands of wavelengths. These data are integrated across the line-of-sight with no information on three-dimensional (3D) location of origin. A model must be …
Characterization Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer In Open Channel Flow Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Mathew James Stanek
Characterization Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer In Open Channel Flow Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Mathew James Stanek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Turbulent boundary layers are influential in numerous applications (e.g. naval architecture, ocean engineering, sediment transport, etc.), yet considerable knowledge gaps still exist. Boundary layers are regions where transfer of mass, momentum, energy, and heat occur within the interface between a fluid and a solid, or between two fluids. Utilization of optical flow measurement techniques to measure the velocity field with high spatial resolution enables non-intrusive investigation of the complex fluid dynamics of boundary layers. In this study two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry was employed to investigate, primarily, the overlap layer of a turbulent boundary layer developed in the recirculating flume facility …
Wing-Tip Vortex Evolution In Turbulence, Hari Charan Ghimire
Wing-Tip Vortex Evolution In Turbulence, Hari Charan Ghimire
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Planar and stereo particle image velocimetry measurements were conducted of a wing-tip vortex decaying in free-stream turbulence in order to understand the evolution of a vortex and its decay mechanism. The vortex decayed faster in the presence of turbulence. The decay of the circulation was found to be almost entirely due to a decrease in circulation of the vortex core, caused by the relative decrease in peak tangential velocity without a corresponding increase in core radius. These events were found to be connected with the stripping of core fluid from the vortex core. The increased rate of decay of the …
Intermittency Effects On The Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah Falih Habeeb Alhamdi
Intermittency Effects On The Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah Falih Habeeb Alhamdi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Measurements of the small-scale dissipation statistics of turbulent boundary layer flows with and without free-stream turbulence are reported for Reτ ≈ 1000 (Reθ ≈ 2000). The scaling of the dissipation scale distribution is examined in these two boundary conditions of external wall-bounded flow.
Results demonstrated that the local large-scale Reynolds number based on the measured longitudinal integral length-scale fails to properly normalize the dissipation scale distribution near the wall in these two free-stream conditions, due to the imperfect characterization of the upper bound of the inertial cascade by the integral length-scale. When a length-scale based on Townsend's …
Evaluating The Effect Of Turbulence On Aircraft During Landing And Take-Off Phases, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
Evaluating The Effect Of Turbulence On Aircraft During Landing And Take-Off Phases, Anthony O' Connor, Derek Kearney
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
—— Low level wind shear and turbulence present a serious safety risk to aircraft during the approach, landing and take-off phases. Low level wind shear has been identified as one of the primary factors for aircraft go-arounds and aborted landings. During any given year, wind shear occurs thousands of times at airports around the world, affecting the arrival and departure of aircraft. This paper has quantified the direct cost of flight Go-arounds. This paper will show the potential savings to the aviation industry. This paper will argue that a solution to the problem of forecasting low level wind shear and …
Effect Of Boundary-Layer Tripping On Turbulence Generation And Trailing-Edge Noise In Transitional Airfoils, James Benjamin Lewis
Effect Of Boundary-Layer Tripping On Turbulence Generation And Trailing-Edge Noise In Transitional Airfoils, James Benjamin Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The need arises for developing quiet aircraft and silent Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to minimize the environmental effects as well as for stealth missions. We focus here on attempting to directly predict the noise associated with airframe by considering a single isolated airfoil. Developing an ability to directly predict the radiated noise and how it is generated is a first step for passive or active control of the generated noise. We choose herein a NACA0012 airfoil and specific flow condition to test whether we can directly predict the sound in accordance with the corresponding experimental data identified in the Benchmark …
Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li
Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The data-driven adaptive algorithms are explored as a means of increasing the accuracy of Reynolds-averaged turbulence models. This dissertation presents two new data-driven adaptive computational models for simulating turbulent flow, where partial-but-incomplete measurement data is available. These models automatically adjust (i.e., adapts) the closure coefficients of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-ω turbulence equations to improve agreement between the simulated flow and a set of prescribed measurement data.
The first approach is the data-driven adaptive RANS k-ω (D-DARK) model. It is validated with three canonical flow geometries: pipe flow, the backward-facing step, and flow around an airfoil. For all 3 test …
Turbulence Control In Wall Jets, Jonathan Latim
Turbulence Control In Wall Jets, Jonathan Latim
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The turbulent boundary layer has been the focus of many studies over the last century or so due to its engineering significance. Recent studies have shown that the turbulent boundary layer encapsulates extremely energetic large-scale structures which play a much more significant role in its dynamics than has been previously thought. Further, these large scales amplitude and frequency modulate the finer scales of turbulence. This offers a path to control wall turbulence by controlling the large-scales of the flow. The focus of this thesis is to establish ways to manipulate the energy of the large-scale structures in a model turbulent …
Fluidic Jet Turbulence Generators For Deflagration To Detonation Transition In Pulsed Detonation Combustors, Jarrett E. Lowe
Fluidic Jet Turbulence Generators For Deflagration To Detonation Transition In Pulsed Detonation Combustors, Jarrett E. Lowe
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The goal of this study is to establish the dominant flow structure required to effectively accelerate the turbulent deflagration flame front to detonation velocity in the shortest possible distance while using a single Jet in Cross Flow (JICF). Jets in crossflow, depending on orientation and momentum ratio, can induce two types of flow structures that propagate downstream; vortex filaments and turbulent eddies. Vortex flow structures are coherent rotating columns that can persist for a considerable distance before diffusing. Turbulent eddies are characterized as random fluctuations in flow velocity or small pockets of rotation. The test rig used for this study …
Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers
Flame-Turbulence Interaction For Deflagration To Detonation, Jessica Chambers
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Detonation is a high energetic mode of pressure gain combustion that exploits total pressure rise to augment high flow momentum and thermodynamic cycle efficiencies. Detonation is initiated through the Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT). This process occurs when a deflagrated flame is accelerated through turbulence induction, producing shock-flame interactions that generate violent explosions and a supersonic detonation wave. There is a broad desire to unravel the physical mechanisms of turbulence induced DDT. For the implementation of efficient detonation methods in propulsion and energy applications, it is crucial to understand optimum turbulence conditions for detonation initiation. The study examines the role of turbulence-flame …

A CFD validation data set for turbulent forced convection on a vertical plate is presented. The design of the apparatus is based on recent validation literature and provides a means to simultaneously measure boundary conditions and system response quantities. All important inflow quantities for RANS CFD are also measured. Data are acquired at two heating conditions and cover the range 40;000 < Rex < 300;000, 357 < Red2 < 813 and 0:02 < Gr/Re2 < 0:232. The data and uncertainties are contained in files in the supplemental material
The Three-Dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer On A Rotating Disk, Daniel Digre
The Three-Dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layer On A Rotating Disk, Daniel Digre
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers (3DTBL) are seen quite commonly in nature as well as in the engineering applications. Despite this, very few high Reynolds number studies have been carried out on these boundary layers, particularly focusing on eddy structure, eddy scales and their interactions. The current study focused on developing, characterizing and evaluating an experimental framework to study high Reynolds number #3DTBL on a rotating disk with the long-term goal of carrying out high-fidelity measurements. The rotating disk flow is characterized by weak centrifugal pumping which sets up the cross flow that leads to turbulence. The tangential and radial velocities …
Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar
Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Thermal Protection systems (TPS) are used as shields in space vehicles which encounter high heat and temperatures at the reentry altitudes. Among them, the cooling techniques and the ablative coatings are most popular. However, they have their own weight limitations. In the recent decade, another classification of TPS called the Non-Ablative Thermal Protection systems (NaTPS) have gained significance. The spike-lateral jet method is an NaTPS concept proposed for drag and heat flux reduction in hypersonic nose cones. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the effectiveness of spike-lateral jet concept at re-entry altitudes. The spike attached to the hemispherical nose has …
Experimental Investigation Of Wall Shear Stress Modifications Due To Turbulent Flow Over An Ablative Thermal Protection System Analog Surface, Jacob Helvey
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Modifications were made to the turbulent channel flow facility to allow for fully developed rough quasi-2D Poiseuille flow with flow injection through one surface and flow suction through the opposing surface. The combination of roughness and flow injection is designed to be analogous to the flow field over a thermal protection system which produces ablative pyrolysis gases during ablation. It was found that the additional momentum through the surface acted to reduce skin friction to a point below smooth-wall behavior. This effect was less significant with increasing Reynolds number. It was also found that the momentum injection modified the wake …
Design Of A High Intensity Turbulent Combustion System, Mohammad Arif Hossain
Design Of A High Intensity Turbulent Combustion System, Mohammad Arif Hossain
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In order to design next generation gas turbine combustor and rocket engines, a systematic study of flame structure at high intensity turbulent flow is necessary. The fundamental study of turbulent premixed combustion has been a major research concern for decades. The work is focused on the design and development of a high intensity turbulent combustion system which can be operated at compressible (0.3 < M < 0.5), preheated (T0=500K) and premixed conditions in order to investigate the 'Thickened Flame' regime. An air-methane mixture has been used as the fuel for this study. An optically accessible backward-facing step stabilized combustor has been designed for a maximum operating pressure of 6 bar. A grid has been introduced with different blockage ratios (BR = 54%, 61% & 67%) in order to generate turbulence inside the combustor for the experiment. Optical access is provided via quartz windows on three sides of the combustion chamber. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is done in order to verify the structural integrity of the combustor at rated conditions. In order to increase the inlet temperature of the air, a heating section was designed to use commercially available in-line heaters. Separate cooling subsystems have been designed for chamber cooling and exhaust cooling. The LabVIEW software interface has been selected as the control mechanism for the experimental setup. A 10 kHz Time Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (TR-PIV) system and a 3 kHz Planer Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) system have been integrated with the system in order to diagnose the flow field and the flame respectively. The primary understanding of the flow field inside the combustor was achieved through the use of Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) by using commercially available software package ANSYS FLUENT. Preliminary validation is done by 10 kHz TR-PIV technique. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis have been done for CFD and experiment. Major flow parameters such as average velocity, fluctuation of velocity, kinetic energy, and turbulent intensity have been calculated for two distinct Reynolds number (Re = 815 & 3500). PIV results are compared with CFD results which show significant agreement with each other.
Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Air Distribution In An Airliner Cabin, Wei Liu
Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Air Distribution In An Airliner Cabin, Wei Liu
Open Access Theses
Nowadays, more people, including those with impaired health or who are otherwise potentially sensitive to the cabin environment, are traveling by air than ever before. The flying public demands a higher comfort level and a cleaner environment because they encounter a combination of environmental factors including low humidity, low air pressure, and sometimes, exposure to air contaminants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, various organic chemicals, and biological agents. Moreover, international air travel has increased the potential risks associated with airborne disease transmission and the release, whether accidentally or intentionally, of noxious substances during flight. Many studies suggest that the risk …
Experimental Investigation Of Blowing Effects On Turbulent Flow Over A Rough Surface, Mark A. Miller, Alexandre Martin, Sean C. C. Bailey
Experimental Investigation Of Blowing Effects On Turbulent Flow Over A Rough Surface, Mark A. Miller, Alexandre Martin, Sean C. C. Bailey
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A high Reynolds number turbulent channel flow facility was used to study the combined effects of roughness and flow injection on the mean flow and turbulence characteristics. It was found that the additional momentum injection through the surface enhanced the roughness effects and for the mean flow the effect of blowing was indistinguishable from that of increased roughness. However, for the turbulence statistics, this analogy broke down in that the addition of blowing resulted in behavior which did not follow that predicted by Townsend’s hypothesis. This was observed as a reduction of outer-scaled Reynolds stress well into the outer layer. …
Microphone-Based Pressure Diagnostics For Boundary Layer Transition, Spencer Everett Lillywhite
Microphone-Based Pressure Diagnostics For Boundary Layer Transition, Spencer Everett Lillywhite
Master's Theses
An experimental investigation of the use low-cost microphones for unsteady total pressure measurement to detect transition from laminar to turbulent boundary layer flow has been conducted. Two small electret condenser microphones, the Knowles FG-23629 and the FG-23742, were used to measure the pressure fluctuations and considered for possible integration with an autonomous boundary layer measurement system. Procedures to determine the microphones’ maximum sound pressure levels and frequency response using an acoustic source provided by a speaker and a reference microphone. These studies showed that both microphones possess a very flat frequency response and that the max SPL of the FG-23629 …
Turbulence Modeling For Subsonic Separated Flows Over 2-D Airfoils And 3-D Wings, Aaron Michael Rosen
Turbulence Modeling For Subsonic Separated Flows Over 2-D Airfoils And 3-D Wings, Aaron Michael Rosen
Open Access Theses
Accurate predictions of turbulent boundary layers and flow separation through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are becoming more and more essential for the prediction of loads in the design of aerodynamic flight components. Standard eddy viscosity models used in many commercial codes today do not capture the nonequilibrium effects seen in a separated flow and thus do not generally make accurate separation predictions. Part of the reason for this is that under nonequilibrium conditions such as a strong adverse pressure gradient, the history effects of the flow play an important role in the growth and decay of turbulence. More recent turbulence …
Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller
Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
A turbulent channel flow was used to study the scaling of the combined effects of roughness and flow injection on the mean flow and turbulence statistics of turbulent plane Poiseuille flow. It was found that the additional momentum injected through the rough surface acted primarily to enhance the roughness effects and, with respect to the mean flow, blowing produced similar mean flow effects as increasing the roughness height. This was not found to hold for the turbulence statistics, as a departure from Townsend’s hypothesis was seen. Instead, the resulting outer-scaled streamwise Reynolds stress for cases with roughness and blowing deviated …
Modification And Application Of A Turbulence Response Analysis Method For Flexible Aircraft Configurations, Christie Jeanne Funk
Modification And Application Of A Turbulence Response Analysis Method For Flexible Aircraft Configurations, Christie Jeanne Funk
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A software program and associated methodology to study gust loading on aircraft exists for a classification of geometrically simplified flexible configurations. This program consists of a simple aircraft response model with two rigid and three flexible symmetric degrees of freedom and allows for the calculation of various airplane responses due to a discrete one-minus-cosine gust as well as continuous turbulence. Simplifications, assumptions, and opportunities for potential improvements pertaining to the existing software program are first identified, then a revised version of the original software tool is developed with improved methodology to include more complex geometries, additional excitation cases, and output …
Evaluation Of Turbulence Variable Distributions For Incompressible Fully Rough Pipe Flows, Emilie B. Fowler
Evaluation Of Turbulence Variable Distributions For Incompressible Fully Rough Pipe Flows, Emilie B. Fowler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The specific turbulent kinetic energy, root-mean-square fluctuating vorticity, and mean-vortexwavelength distributions are presented for fully rough pipe flow. The distributions of these turbulence variables are obtained from a proposed turbulence model. Many of the turbulence models commonly used for computational fluid dynamics are based on an analogy between molecular and turbulent transport. However, traditional k-ε and k-ω models fail to exhibit proper dependence on the molecular viscosity. Based on a rigorous application of the Boussinesq’s hypothesis, Phillips proposed a vorticity-based transport equation for the turbulent kinetic energy. The foundation for this vorticity-based transport equation is presented. In future development of …
An Investigation Into Delta Wing Vortex Generators As A Means Of Increasing Algae Biofuel Raceway Vertical Mixing Including An Analysis Of The Resulting Turbulence Characteristics, Aaron H. Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Current standards of living and future prosperity are closely tied to the availability of sufficient and inexpensive energy resources. Currently society is fueled primarily by some form of fossil fuel. By their very nature these fuel sources are non-renewable, thus our current energy habits are unsustainable. Among the various renewable energy technologies is the capability to produce diesel fuel by colonies of algae. While this technology has many positive features it remains too expensive to be a realistic fuel source. The current work performed analysis using computer simulation of an aquatic environment commonly used to grow algae for the purposes …
High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick
High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
To supplement past research on low speed unsteady airfoil responses to upstream disturbances, this work proposes and investigates a method to generate a turbulent momentum source to be convected downstream and interact with an SD7003 airfoil in a high-fidelity numerical simulation. A perturbation velocity field is generated from a summation of Fourier harmonics and applied to the forcing function in the momentum terms of the Navier Stokes Equations. The result is a three-dimensional, divergence-free, convected turbulent gust with applied statistical parameters. A parametric study has been done in 2D and 3D comparing the resultant flow fields and airfoil interactions for …

Development of a next generation gas turbine combustors for power production by using fossil fuels is increasing substantially in order to maintain energy sustainability. National Energy Technology Laboratory has made efforts for developing hydrogen and oxy-fuel based gas turbine combustors which could enhance plant efficiency and ensure low or zero NOx production without sacrificing operational advantages. The current experimental work aims to characterize the turbulent flow-field of premixed syngas/air flames, methane/oxy flames and syngas/oxy flames in a laboratory scaled burner by varying the Reynolds numbers, blockage ratios, firing inputs and blockage ratios in the upstream of the burner. The effects …
Large-Eddy Simulation Of Axially-Rotating, Turbulent Pipe And Particle-Laden Swirling Jet Flows, Nicolas D. Castro
Large-Eddy Simulation Of Axially-Rotating, Turbulent Pipe And Particle-Laden Swirling Jet Flows, Nicolas D. Castro
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The flows of fully-developed turbulent rotating pipe and particle-laden swirling jet emitted from the pipe into open quiescent atmosphere are investigated numerically using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES). Simulations are performed at various rotation rates and Reynolds numbers, based on bulk velocity and pipe diameter, of 5.3x103, 12x103, and 24x103, respectively. Time-averaged LES results are compared with experimental and simulation data from previous studies. Pipe flow results confirm observations in previous studies, such as the deformation of the turbulent mean axial velocity profile towards the laminar Poiseuille-profile, with increased rotation. The Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor shows a redistribution due to pipe rotation. …
Unsteady Total Pressure Measurement For Laminar-To-Turbulent Transition Detection, Akane Sharon Karasawa
Unsteady Total Pressure Measurement For Laminar-To-Turbulent Transition Detection, Akane Sharon Karasawa
Master's Theses
This thesis presents the use of an unsteady total pressure measurement to detect laminar-to-turbulent transition. A miniature dynamic pressure transducer, Kulite model XCS-062-5D, was utilized to measure the total pressure fluctuations, and was integrated with an autonomous boundary layer measurement device that can withstand flight test conditions. Various sensor-probe configurations of the Kulite pressure transducer were first examined in a wind tunnel with a 0.610 m (2.0 ft) square test section with a maximum operational velocity of 49.2 m/s (110 mph), corresponding dynamic pressure of 1.44 kPa (30 psf). The Kulite sensor was placed on an elliptical nose flat plate …
