Towards Efficient Viscous Modeling Based On Cartesian Methods For Automated Flow Simulation, Patrick Hu, Hongwu Zhao, Ramji Kamakoti, Nagendra Dittakavi, Liping Xue, Kan Ni, Shaolin Mao, David D. Marshall, Michael Aftosmis
Aerospace Engineering
The advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques that address the current limitations of Cartesian-based Navier-Stokes CFD schemes are explored in current investigation. Three promising methods of implementing improved wall boundary conditions are applied: (1) the enhanced diamond path stencil approach, (2) the reformulated extended extrapolation boundary condition, and (3) the ghost cell method. Several initial testing cases have been conducted with all these three boundary conditions, including the flow past a circular cylinder, flow past a flat plate at different inclined angles and flow past an AGARD RAE2822 airfoil. All the results show the effectiveness of these boundary conditions in …
Inverse Airfoil Design Utilizing Cst Parameterization, Kevin A. Lane, David D. Marshall
Inverse Airfoil Design Utilizing Cst Parameterization, Kevin A. Lane, David D. Marshall
Aerospace Engineering
An inverse airfoil design process is presented that makes use of the CST parameterization method. The CST method is very powerful in that it can easily represent any airfoil shape within the entire design space of smooth airfoils. This makes it an ideal modeling technique for an inverse design process because accurate airfoil geometry treatment is required. The downfall of some inverse design processes is that they do not accurately handle the leading edge region due to large flow gradients and high curvature distributions. One way to account for this is by representing airfoils with smooth analytic functions, such as …

Assessing The V2-F Turbulence Models For Circulation Control Applications, Travis M. Storm, David D. Marshall
Aerospace Engineering
This paper explores the applicability of several variations of the v2-f turbulence model to circulation control flows. The effects of modifying the model to capture nonlinear eddy viscosity effects and streamline curvature effects are assessed. Results indicate that the v2-f turbulence model is capable producing more physically accurate results for circulation control flow fields than common modern turbulence modeling techniques.
Numerical Investigation Of Aeroelastic Mode Distribution For Aircraft Wing Model In Subsonic Air Flow, Marianna A. Shubov, Stephen B. Wineberg, Robert Holt
Numerical Investigation Of Aeroelastic Mode Distribution For Aircraft Wing Model In Subsonic Air Flow, Marianna A. Shubov, Stephen B. Wineberg, Robert Holt
Mathematics & Statistics
In this paper, the numerical results on two problems originated in aircraft wing modeling have been presented. The first problem is concerned with the approximation to the set of the aeroelastic modes, which are the eigenvalues of a certain boundary-value problem. The affirmative answer is given to the following question: can the leading asymptotical terms in the analytical formulas be used as reasonably accurate description of the aeroelastic modes? The positive answer means that these leading terms can be used by engineers for practical calculations. The second problem is concerned with the flutter phenomena in aircraft wings in a subsonic, …
Multiscale Transformation Field Analysis Of Progressive Damage In Fibrous Laminates, Yehia Bahei-El-Din, Ritesh Khire, Prabhat Hajela
Multiscale Transformation Field Analysis Of Progressive Damage In Fibrous Laminates, Yehia Bahei-El-Din, Ritesh Khire, Prabhat Hajela
Centre for Advanced Materials
As part of an ongoing effort to model uncertainty propagation across multiple scales in fibrous laminates, this paper presents a deterministic transformation field analysis for modeling damage progression under membrane forces and bending moments. In this approach, equivalent eigenstresses are computed in the phases and/or plies such that their respective stress components that satisfy the underlying failure criteria are reduced to zero. Superposition of the solutions found for the undamaged laminate under applied loads and under the eigenstress field provide the entire response. Failure criteria are based on stress averages in the fiber and matrix. Damage mechanisms considered are frictional …

Modified Sandwich Structures For Improved Impact Resistance Of Wind Turbine Blades, Yehia Bahei-El-Din, Mostafa Shazly, I. El-Habbal, Y. Elbahy
Centre for Advanced Materials
Wind turbine blades are susceptible to damage due to fatigue as well as impact by flying objects and parts broken off failed blades of nearby wind towers. Localized, permanent compression of the foam core and delamination of the fibrous composite face sheets are typical damage modes and can lead to progressive structural failure. Sandwich structures modified by inclusion of flexible polyurethane (PU) layers within the cross section are examined under both impact and dynamic loads. Finite element models of sandwich structures with conventional and modified designs show that sandwich designs modified with PU interlayes exhibit reduced foam core crushing and …

As mankind reaches to explore extreme environments in space, the application of ceramics surface coatings is increasing. The 2005 mission concept for Solar Probe used a unique design to achieve the necessary thermal control for a very close approach to the solar corona, including the use of a highly refractory, electrically insulating ceramic coating over a carbon-carbon composite heat shield. The proposed trajectory takes the spacecraft from a Jovian fly-by to within 4 solar radii of the Sun, spanning 5 orders of magnitude in solar radiation and solar wind plasma density as well as spacecraft temperatures from <100 K to >2000 K. In Search Of Something More: My Path Towards International Service-Learning In Engineering Education, Margaret Pinnell
In Search Of Something More: My Path Towards International Service-Learning In Engineering Education, Margaret Pinnell
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
My personal and professional travels led me toward global education, in particular the University of Dayton (UD) program Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-Learning (ETHOS). I do not believe I ever intended to become part of an international engineering education program. In fact, I think the international piece was just a bonus. What really drew me to the ETHOS program was what initially draws our students to the program - a desire to "help" people. In order for the reader to understand how I ended up being involved in global education through the ETHOS program, I must first explain …
On The Benefits Of In-Flight System Identification For Autonomous Airdrop Systems, Michael Ward, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers
On The Benefits Of In-Flight System Identification For Autonomous Airdrop Systems, Michael Ward, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A unique feature of airdrop systems is the inherent and large variability in flight dynamic characteristics. The same physical article dropped on two different occasions will exhibit significantly different dynamic response. The problem only becomes worse for different test articles. Control systems for autonomous airdrop systems explicitly or implicitly assume knowledge of the flight dynamic characteristics in some way, shape, or form. A question facing autonomous airdrop designers is whether to use precomputed dynamic characteristics inside the control law, or to compute the needed flight dynamic characteristics in-flight and subsequently employ them in the control law. This paper establishes conditions …
Efficient Tether Dynamic Model Formulation Using Recursive Rigid-Body Dynamics, Brad Hembree, Nathan Slegers
Efficient Tether Dynamic Model Formulation Using Recursive Rigid-Body Dynamics, Brad Hembree, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A computationally efficient discrete model for low-strain tethers used in many engineering applications is developed without the use of elastic elements. The tether is modelled using N links, with each link treated as a body of revolution where it is assumed the tether spin is negligible to the dynamics, resulting in each link having only two degrees of freedom. A recursive algorithm is developed for the dynamic equations, with the solution procedure being an order N method requiring only a 2 x 2 matrix inversion, resulting in approximately half the computations of the general recursive algorithm. A comparison between the …

Effects Of Canopy-Payload Relative Motion On Control Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers
Effects Of Canopy-Payload Relative Motion On Control Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
An 8 degree-of-freedom model is developed that accurately models relative pitching and yawing motion of a payload with respect to a parafoil. Constraint forces and moments are found analytically rather than using artificial constraint stabilization. A turn rate controller common in precision placement algorithms is used to demonstrate that relative yawing motion of the payload can result in persistent oscillations of the system. A model neglecting relative payload yawing failed to predict the same oscillations. It is shown that persistent oscillations can be eliminated by reduction of feedback gains; however, resulting tracking performance is poor. A reduced order linear model …

Aircraft Conceptual Design - An Adaptable Parametric Sizing Methodology, Gary John Coleman
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Aerospace is a maturing industry with successful and refined baselines which work well for traditional baseline missions, markets and technologies. However, when new markets (space tourism) or new constrains (environmental) or new technologies (composite, natural laminar flow) emerge, the conventional solution is not necessarily best for the new situation. Which begs the question "how does a design team quickly screen and compare novel solutions to conventional solutions for new aerospace challenges?" The answer is rapid and flexible conceptual design Parametric Sizing. In the product design life-cycle, parametric sizing is the first step in screening the total vehicle in terms of …
Constrained Dynamics Approach For Motion Synchronization And Consensus, Divya Bhatia
Constrained Dynamics Approach For Motion Synchronization And Consensus, Divya Bhatia
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
In this research we propose to develop constrained dynamical systems based stable attitude synchronization, consensus and tracking (SCT) control laws for the formation of rigid bodies. The generalized constrained dynamics Equations of Motion (EOM) are developed utilizing constraint potential energy functions that enforce communication constraints. Euler-Lagrange equations are employed to develop the non-linear constrained dynamics of multiple vehicle systems. The constraint potential energy is synthesized based on a graph theoretic formulation of the vehicle-vehicle communication. Constraint stabilization is achieved via Baumgarte's method. The performance of these constrained dynamics based formations is evaluated for bounded control authority. The above method has been …
Ideal Cycle Analysis Of A Regenerative Pulse Detonation Engine For Power Production, Rafaela Bellini
Ideal Cycle Analysis Of A Regenerative Pulse Detonation Engine For Power Production, Rafaela Bellini
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Over the last few decades, considerable research has been focused on pulse detonation engines (PDEs) as a promising replacement for existing propulsion systems with potential applications in aircraft ranging from the subsonic to the lower hypersonic regimes. On the other hand, very little attention has been given to applying detonation for electric power production. One method for assessing the performance of a PDE is through thermodynamic cycle analysis. Earlier works have adopted a thermodynamic cycle for the PDE that was based on the assumption that the detonation process could be approximated by a constant volume process, called the Humphrey cycle. …
Stress Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beam With I-Section, Jitesh Cherukkadu Parambil
Stress Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beam With I-Section, Jitesh Cherukkadu Parambil
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The advantage of material properties and flexibility of choosing material have made composite materials a primary preference for structural application. Unlike isotropic materials, the parametric study of composite beams for optimized design is complicated due to high number of parameters involved in designing like lay-up sequence, and layer configuration. Moreover, the limitations of FEA techniques in designing have created a need for an analytical closed-form solution for stress analysis of laminated composite beams. The objective of this study focuses on the development of an analytical method for stress analysis of composite I-beam. This method includes the structural response due to …

Solution To Multi Term Boltzmann Equation For Plasma Assisted Combustion, Antriksh Luthra
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Plasma assisted ignition and combustion (PAIC) is a technology where plasma is generated by high voltage, nano second pulse duration and high repetitive rate pulses. The high reduced electric field during the pulse allows efficient electronic excitation and molecular dissociation, thereby generating a pool of chemically active radical species. This speeds up the reaction process needed to generate a high speed flame a very high energy is liberated though the mode of excited electrons to the neutral molecules of the fuel in such a way that the energy sent should not go in momentum transfer but it should be so …

Effects Of Freezing On The Mechanical Properties Of Engineered Tissues, Lacey Mlcak
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Cryopreservation is used to preserve cells and tissues at low temperatures for short and long term uses. Some examples of where cryopreservation is used include the storage of organs, blood, embryos, and artificial tissues. A current challenge of cryopreservation is being able to understand and quantify the effects of freezing/thawing on the functional properties of tissues such as mechanical properties. This study investigated the changes in viscoelastic parameters of engineered tissues before and after freezing by performing creep-relaxation tests using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Three types of engineered tissues were studied with varying cell and collagen concentrations for two different …

In the past, compact components such as chip scale packages and flip chip packages were the work horses of miniaturization. However emerging applications are now demanding even higher packaging density which has led to the evolution of 3D packaging, some of the advantages being minimal conductor length, reduce speed limiting inter chip interconnects. This has resulted in the emergence of 3D packaging technologies like stacked package, through silicon vias (TSV), package on package (PoP) etc. In order to address the various challenging requirements, PoP is seen as the leading 3D packaging platform by the system designers and semiconductor suppliers. PoP …

Structural members and components, such as shells and trusses of different geometries, form the intricate and deep seated parts in the manufacturing of missiles submarines, rockets, airplanes, automobiles etc and find applications in civil structures such as bridges. These members are comprised of components like conical frusta, cylindrical panels and shallow trusses. In many cases, the sole purpose of such shell structures is to absorb the energy generated due to impact which means, that these structures are subjected to heavy loads and can experience failure due to buckling. The objective of this work is to study the buckling and post …

This paper outlines the aerodynamics shape optimization process of a 3D VKI gas turbine blade using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and differential evolution optimization method. The main objective of this work is to improve outlet total pressure for better aerodynamic performance. This benefit is achieved by optimizing the stacking line path of the turbine blade in 3D annular cascade for which higher exit total pressure is achieved. The optimization process starts with generating a 3D annular cascade with a boundary domain and meshing it using GAMBIT and is then solved in FLUENT using viscous flow analysis. The original stacking line …
Simulation Of Indeterminate Multi-Point Impact And Contact With Friction, Adrian Rodriguez
Simulation Of Indeterminate Multi-Point Impact And Contact With Friction, Adrian Rodriguez
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This work presents a method for determining the post-impact behavior of a rigid-body undergoing simultaneous, multiple impacts with friction. A discrete algebraic model is used with an event-driven function which finds impact events. In this work, the indeterminate nature of the equations of motion encountered at impact are examined. A velocity constraint is developed based on the rigid-body assumption to address the equations and an impact law is used to determine the impulsive forces. The slip-state of each contact point is then determined and appropriate methods are used to resolve the post-impact velocities. Friction is treated as a complementarity problem …
