All research was conducted at the Aerospace Laboratory for Plasma Experiments (ALPE) at Western Michigan University. Hydroxylammonium nitrate solution 24% wt. in H2O was used consistently throughout this research. A variety of temperatures and pressures ranging from 23°C to 645°C and 6E-3 Torr to 4 Torr, respectively, were used to decompose HAN. The primary gaseous species resulting from these decomposition conditions are N2O, NO, and trace amounts of NO2. The formation of H2O, and N2 is conditional on the experimental conditions, and the formation of …

An Imu-Based Spacecraft Navigation Architecture Using A Robust Multi-Sensor Fault Detection Scheme, Samuel J. Haberberger Jan 2016

An Imu-Based Spacecraft Navigation Architecture Using A Robust Multi-Sensor Fault Detection Scheme, Samuel J. Haberberger

Masters Theses

"Redundant sensor networks of inertial measurement units (IMUs) provide inherent robustness and redundancy to a navigation solution obtained by dead reckoning the fused accelerations and angular velocities sensed by the IMU. However, IMUs have been known to experience faults risking catastrophic mission failure creating large financial setbacks and an increased risk of human safety. Different fusion methods are analyzed for a multi-sensor network using cost effective IMUs, including direct averaging and covariance intersection. Simulations of a spacecraft in low Earth orbit are used to baseline a typical expensive IMU and compare the navigation solution obtained from a network of several …

Thrust Sensing For Small Uavs, Christopher Scott Marchman Jan 2016

Thrust Sensing For Small Uavs, Christopher Scott Marchman

Masters Theses

"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become prevalent in both military and civilian applications. UAVs have many size categories from large-scale aircraft to micro air vehicles. The performance, health, and efficiency for UAVs of smaller sizes can be difficult to assess and few associated instrumentation systems have been developed. Thrust measurements on the ground can characterize systems especially when combined with simultaneous motor power measurements. This thesis demonstrates the use of strain measurements to measure the thrust produced by motor/propeller combinations for such small UAVs. A full-bridge Wheatstone circuit and electrical resistance strain gauges were used in conjunction with constant-stress cantilever …

Intensity Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew Crawford Paliwoda Jan 2016

Intensity Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew Crawford Paliwoda

Masters Theses

"When operated in a filamentary mode, a volume dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is known to produce patterned plasma structures. These structures are currently being explored for reconfigurable metamaterial applications. In this work the presence and intensity of a single filament, within an array of filaments, was controlled by adjusting the voltage to that filament's individual needle electrode. The current, voltage, and time-averaged normalized light intensity were measured while varying the voltage of the needle through a self-biasing resistance. For a 7.5 kV, 3.2 kHz DBD in air, the needle-controlled filament intensity varies from that of the surrounding filaments to zero …

A Linear Matrix Inequality-Based Approach For The Computation Of Actuator Bandwidth Limits In Adaptive Control, Daniel Robert Wagner

Masters Theses

"Linear matrix inequalities and convex optimization techniques have become popular tools to solve nontrivial problems in the field of adaptive control. Specifically, the stability of adaptive control laws in the presence of actuator dynamics remains as an important open control problem. In this thesis, we present a linear matrix inequalities-based hedging approach and evaluate it for model reference adaptive control of an uncertain dynamical system in the presence of actuator dynamics. The ideal reference dynamics are modified such that the hedging approach allows the correct adaptation without being hindered by the presence of actuator dynamics. The hedging approach is first …

Characterization Of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters, Matthew Scott Glascock

Masters Theses

"Electric solid propellants are an attractive option for space propulsion because they are ignited by applied electric power only. In this work, the behavior of pulsed microthruster devices utilizing such a material is investigated. These devices are similar in function and operation to the pulsed plasma thruster, which typically uses Teflon as propellant. A Faraday probe, Langmuir triple probe, residual gas analyzer, pendulum thrust stand and high speed camera are utilized as diagnostic devices. These thrusters are made in batches, of which a few devices were tested experimentally in vacuum environments. Results indicate a plume electron temperature of about 1.7 …

Development And Testing Of A Fracture Energy-Based Model Of Explosive Asteroid Deflection, James A. Veerkamp Jan 2016

Development And Testing Of A Fracture Energy-Based Model Of Explosive Asteroid Deflection, James A. Veerkamp

Masters Theses

"While asteroid deflection has been studied for the past half century, efforts have generally been directed towards methods that attempt to minimize disruption of the rock body. In order to widen the base of research, a fracture energy-based model of asteroid fragmentation was developed and applied to both asteroid scale and lab testable scale cases. Modeling of the orbital case suggests the capability to deflect a 100 meter diameter asteroid on a 10 year timescale. The model's predicted energy transfer is then compared to laboratory testing using a ballistic pendulum. The results of this testing suggest that the model as …

Implementing A Linear Quadratic Spacecraft Attitude Control System, Daniel Kolosa

Masters Theses

This thesis implements a linear quadratic attitude control system for a low-thrust spacecraft. The goal is to maintain spacecraft alignment with a time-varying thrust vector needed for trajectory change maneuvers. A linear quadratic attitude control approach is used to maintain spacecraft pointing throughout flight. This attitude control strategy uses the thrust-acceleration input obtained from a linear quadratic optimal trajectory control model that simulates the trajectory of a spacecraft in orbit maneuvers. This attitude model simulates a CubeSat, a small satellite that is equipped with a low-thrust propulsion and attitude control system. An orbit raising and a plane change scenario is …

Specifically, uncertainty quantification of turbulence model closure coefficients was performed for transonic flow over an axisymmetric bump at zero degrees angle of attack and the RAE 2822 transonic airfoil at a lift coefficient of 0.744. Three turbulence models were considered: the Spalart-Allmaras Model, Wilcox (2006) k-ω Model, and the …

Hybrid Manufacturing Process Of SicF/Sic Composite Using Preceramic Polymer, Robert Raymond Meinders Jan 2015

Hybrid Manufacturing Process Of SicF/Sic Composite Using Preceramic Polymer, Robert Raymond Meinders

Masters Theses

"Continuous fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (SiCf/SiC) ceramic composites have been increasingly used due to their high temperature strength and graceful failure mechanisms. A disadvantage is the high cost and lengthy production processes that are required to develop these materials. Polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) is one of the most attractive fabrication processes for composites due to shape flexibility, mass production and relatively low cost; however, the quality of material obtained by this method has been considered insufficient due to the microstructure defects of the material obtained. This study investigated a hybrid of multiple polymer manufacturing processes to maximize quality …

Fabrication Of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Transparent Composites Using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding Process, Gregory A. Taylor

Masters Theses

"The most commonly used transparent material is glass. Traditionally, glass is not desired for applications involving a low weight material while preserving high strength such as aerospace and military applications where armor must also be transparent. Some applications may include aircraft canopies and other vehicle windows. Development of a reliable transparent composite would fill a need for many of these applications where a transparent structure must both be strong and lightweight. A transparent polymer reinforced with a glass fiber fabric is a viable solution. To ensure transparency, both fiber and matrix must match in refractive index.

In the present work, …
