Design Of An Adaptive Autopilot For An Expendable Launch Vehicle, Clinton Plaisted Jan 2008

Design Of An Adaptive Autopilot For An Expendable Launch Vehicle, Clinton Plaisted

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the use of a Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) direct approach to solve the attitude control problem of an Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) during its boost phase of flight. The adaptive autopilot design is based on Lyapunov Stability Theory and provides a useful means for controlling the ELV in the presence of environmental and dynamical uncertainties. Several different basis functions are employed to approximate the nonlinear parametric uncertainties in the system dynamics. The control system is designed so that the desire dresponse to a reference model would be tracked by the closed-loop system. The reference model is …

An Algorithm For Determining Satellite Attitude By Comparing Physical Feature Models To Edges Detected In Satellite Or Ground-Based Telescope Imagery, Eric Brian Reinhart Jan 2007

An Algorithm For Determining Satellite Attitude By Comparing Physical Feature Models To Edges Detected In Satellite Or Ground-Based Telescope Imagery, Eric Brian Reinhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the development and performance of an algorithm created to calculate satellite attitude based on the comparison of satellite "physical feature" models to information derived from edge detection performed on imagery of the satellite. The quality of this imagery could range from the very clear, close-up imagery that may come from an unmanned satellite servicing mission to the faint, unclear imagery that may come from a ground-based telescope investigating a satellite anomaly. Satellite "physical feature" models describe where an edge is likely to appear in an image. These are usually defined by physical edges on the structure of …

Supersonic Crossflow Visualization Using The University Of Central Florida Supersonic Wind Tunnel, Peter Himmerich Jan 2007

Supersonic Crossflow Visualization Using The University Of Central Florida Supersonic Wind Tunnel, Peter Himmerich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The next generation air breathing engine that would enable an alternative to conventional air travel or suborbital flight is the supersonic ramjet engine (SCRAM) which requires a highly accelerated rate of fuel mixing and combustion. For this type of engine, one of the improvement opportunities lies in the injection of the fuel into the supersonic flow inside the combustor. In order to determine the flow field that develops when a sonic jet of secondary gas is injected into a supersonic free stream, a dedicated test section was developed which was attached to the existing supersonic wind tunnel at the University …

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker Jan 2007

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combustion behavior of methane and ethane is important to the study of natural gas and other alternative fuels that are comprised primarily of these two basic hydrocarbons. Understanding the transition from methane-dominated ignition kinetics to ethane-dominated kinetics for increasing levels of ethane is also of fundamental interest toward the understanding of hydrocarbon chemical kinetics. Much research has been conducted on the two fuels individually, but experimental data of the combustion of blends of methane and ethane is limited to ratios that recreate typical natural gas compositions (up to ~20% ethane molar concentration). The goal of this study was to …

Effect Of Operator Control Configuration On Unmanned Aerial System Trainability, John Neumann Jan 2006

Effect Of Operator Control Configuration On Unmanned Aerial System Trainability, John Neumann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) carry no pilot on board, yet they still require live operators to handle critical functions such as mission planning and execution. Humans also interpret the sensor information provided by these platforms. This applies to all classes of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's), including the smaller portable systems used for gathering real-time reconnaissance during military operations in urban terrain. The need to quickly and reliably train soldiers to control small UAS operations demands that the human-system interface be intuitive and easy to master. In this study, participants completed a series of tests of spatial ability and were then …

Reduction Of Vortex-Driven Oscillations In A Solid Rocket Motor Cold Flow Simulation Through Active Control, Jami Ward Jan 2006

Reduction Of Vortex-Driven Oscillations In A Solid Rocket Motor Cold Flow Simulation Through Active Control, Jami Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Control of vortex-driven instabilities was demonstrated via a scaled-down, cold-flow simulation that modeled closed-end acoustics. When vortex shedding frequencies couple with the natural acoustic modes of a choked chamber, potentially damaging low-frequency instabilities may arise. Although passive solutions can be effective, an active control solution is preferable. An experiment was performed to demonstrate an active control scheme for the reduction of vortex-driven oscillations. A non-reacting experiment using a primary flow of air, where both the duct exit and inlet are choked, simulated the closed-end acoustics. Two plates, separated by 1.27 cm, produced the vortex shedding phenomenon at the chamber's first …

Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Tile Subnominal Bonds, Cooper Snapp Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Tile Subnominal Bonds, Cooper Snapp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study researched the history of Space Shuttle Reusable Surface Insulation which was designed and developed for use on the United States Orbiter fleet to protect from the high heating experienced during reentry through Earth's atmosphere. Specifically the tile system which is attached to the structure by the means of an RTV adhesive has experienced situations where the bonds are identified as subnominal. The history of these subnominal conditions is presented along with a recent identification of a subnominal bond between the Strain Isolation Pad and the tile substrate itself. Tests were run to identify the cause of these subnominal …

An Investigation Of The Autoignition Of Power Generation Gas Turbine Fuel Blends Using A Design Of Experiments Approach, Jaap De Vries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural gas has grown in popularity as a fuel for power generation gas turbines. However, changes in fuel composition are a topic of concern since fuel variability can have a great impact on the reliability and performance of the burner design. In particular, autoignition of the premixed fuel and air prior to entering the main burner is a potential concern when using exotic fuel blends. To obtain much-needed data in this area, autoignition experiments for a wide range of likely fuel blends containing CH4 mixed with combinations of C2H6, C3H8, C4H10, C5H12, and H2 were performed in a high-pressure shock …

An Analysis Of The Conventional Wire Maintenance Methods And Transition Wire Integrity Programs Utilized In The Aviation Industry., Susan Jeruto Kiptinness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging aircraft wiring poses a significant threat to both commercial and military aircraft. Recent air disasters involving aging aircraft wiring have made it clear that aging wiring can be catastrophic. Aging of an electrical wiring system can result in loss of critical functions of equipment or loss of information regarding equipment operation. Either result can lead to an electrical failure causing smoke and fire, consequently being a danger to public health and aircraft safety.

Conventional maintenance practices do not effectively manage aging wiring problems. More proactive methods are needed so that aircraft wiring failures can be anticipated and wiring systems …

Reduced Kinetic Mechanisms For Premixedhydrogen-Air-Cf3br Flames, Yi Zhang Jan 2004

Reduced Kinetic Mechanisms For Premixedhydrogen-Air-Cf3br Flames, Yi Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Halon 1301 (CF3Br), or bromotrifluoromethane, had been widely used as fire-extinguishing agent for many years before its production and consumption were severely regulated by the Montreal Protocol due to its hazardous depletion effect to the stratospheric ozone layer. It is therefore imperative to find an effective replacement fire-fighting agent before the mandated deadline of the complete phase out of CF3Br. Currently there are intensive efforts in searching for an environmentally acceptable fire suppression replacement. This, however, is hampered by a lack of fundamental understanding of how CF3Br suppresses the chemical reactions in a flame environment so effectively. Recent experimental evidence …
