The Impact Of Automation Reliability And Fatigue On Reliance, Ryan Wohleber Jan 2016

The Impact Of Automation Reliability And Fatigue On Reliance, Ryan Wohleber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to inform the design of dynamic interfaces to optimize unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operator reliance on automation. A broad goal of the U.S. military is to improve the ratio of UAV operators to UAVs controlled. Accomplishing this goal requires the use of automation; however, the benefits of automation are jeopardized without appropriate operator reliance. To improve reliance on automation, this effort sought to accomplish several objectives organized into phases. The first phase aimed to validate metrics that could be used to gauge operator fatigue online, to understand how the reliability of automated systems influences …

Identification Of Geostationary Satellites Using Polarization Data From Unresolved Images, Andy Speicher Jan 2015

Identification Of Geostationary Satellites Using Polarization Data From Unresolved Images, Andy Speicher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to protect critical military and commercial space assets, the United States Space Surveillance Network must have the ability to positively identify and characterize all space objects. Unfortunately, positive identification and characterization of space objects is a manual and labor intensive process today since even large telescopes cannot provide resolved images of most space objects. Since resolved images of geosynchronous satellites are not technically feasible with current technology, another method of distinguishing space objects was explored that exploits the polarization signature from unresolved images.

The objective of this study was to collect and analyze visible-spectrum polarization data from unresolved …

Load Transfer In An Isolated Particle Embedded Within An Epoxy Matrix, Erik Durnberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Particulate composites are widely used in many aerospace applications such as protective coatings, adhesives, or structural members of a body and their mechanical properties and behavior have gained increasing significance. The addition of modifiers such as alumina generally leads to improved mechanical properties. This addition also enables the non-invasive study of the load transfer between the particle and the matrix. Understanding the load transfer between the particulate and the matrix material is the first step to understanding the behavior and mechanical properties of the composite as a whole. In this work, samples with an isolated alumina particle embedded in an …

Agglomeration, Evaporation And Morphological Changes In Droplets With Nanosilica And Nanoalumina Suspensions In An Acoustic Field, Erick Tijerino Jan 2012

Agglomeration, Evaporation And Morphological Changes In Droplets With Nanosilica And Nanoalumina Suspensions In An Acoustic Field, Erick Tijerino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acoustic levitation permits the study of droplet dynamics without the effects of surface interactions present in other techniques such as pendant droplet methods. Despite the complexities of the interactions of the acoustic field with the suspended droplet, acoustic levitation provides distinct advantages of controlling morphology of droplets with nanosuspensions post precipitation. Droplet morphology is controlled by vaporization, deformation and agglomeration of nanoparticles, and therefore their respective timescales are important to control the final shape. The balance of forces acting on the droplet, such as the acoustic pressure and surface tension, determine the geometry of the levitated droplet. Thus, the morphology …

Thermal Stability Characteristics Of Fisher-Tropsch And Hydroprocessed Alternative Aviation Fuels In A Fixed Bed Reactor, Sergio Quintero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growing prices, limited supply, and public concern about greenhouse gases associated with crude-derived jet fuels have led to development of renewable alternatives which must be compatible with the worldwide civilian and military aviation infrastructure, which were designed for operation with Jet-A/JP-8. Any alternative fuel should not have negative effects on the aircraft engines and fuel systems, especially from a thermal stability perspective, since any adverse effect of the physical properties, and chemical composition, including existence of trace elements, of those fuels may only be revealed after extensive operation, resulting in higher life-cycle maintenance and operation costs. This study considered four …

Optimal Attitude Control Management For A Cubesat, Michael James Develle Jan 2011

Optimal Attitude Control Management For A Cubesat, Michael James Develle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

CubeSats have become popular among universities, research organizations, and government agencies due to their low cost, small size, and light weight. Their standardized configurations further reduce the development time and ensure more frequent launch opportunities. Early cubesat missions focused on hardware validation and simple communication missions, with little requirement for pointing accuracy. Most of these used magnetic torque rods or coils for attitude stabilization. However, the intrinsic problems associated with magnetic torque systems, such as the lack of three-axis control and low pointing accuracy, make them unsuitable for more advanced missions such as detailed imaging and on-orbit inspection. Threeaxis control …

Methods for optimization of manufacturing …

Thermomechanical Behavior Of High-Temperature Shape Memory Alloy Ni-Ti-Pd-Pt Actuators, Douglas E. Nicholson Jan 2011

Thermomechanical Behavior Of High-Temperature Shape Memory Alloy Ni-Ti-Pd-Pt Actuators, Douglas E. Nicholson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To date the commercial use of shape memory alloys (SMAs) has been mostly limited to binary NiTi alloys with transformation temperatures approximately in the -100 to 100 ºC range. In an ongoing effort to develop high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs), ternary and quaternary additions are being made to binary NiTi to form NiTi-X (e.g., X: Pd, Pt, Au and Hf) alloys. Stability and repeatability can be further increased at these higher temperatures by limiting the stress, but the tradeoff is reduced work output and stroke. However, HTSMAs operating at decreased stresses can still be used effectively in actuator applications that …

Super-Adiabatic Combustion In Porous Media With Catalytic Enhancement For Thermoelectric Power Conversion, Kyle Thomas Mueller Jan 2011

Super-Adiabatic Combustion In Porous Media With Catalytic Enhancement For Thermoelectric Power Conversion, Kyle Thomas Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combustion of ultra-lean fuel to air mixtures provides an efficient way to convert the chemical energy of hydrocarbons into useful power. Conventional burning techniques of a mixture have defined flammability limits beyond which a flame cannot self-propagate due to heat losses. Matrix stabilized porous medium combustion is an advanced technique in which a solid porous matrix within the combustion chamber accumulates heat from the hot gaseous products and preheats incoming reactants. This heat recirculation extends the standard flammability limits and allows the burning of ultra-lean fuel mixtures, conserving energy resources, or the burning of gases of low calorific value, …

An Uncertainty Quantification Of The Variation Of Internal Heat Transfer Coefficients And The Effect On Airfoil Life, Jan H. Marsh Jan 2010

An Uncertainty Quantification Of The Variation Of Internal Heat Transfer Coefficients And The Effect On Airfoil Life, Jan H. Marsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Uncertainty in accurately knowing applied internal heat transfer coefficients inside of a cooling passage can lead to variability in predicting low cycle fatigue life of a turbine vane or blade. Under-predicting a life value for a turbine part can have disastrous effects on the engine as a whole, and can negate efforts in innovative design for advanced cooling techniques for turbine components. Quantification of this fatigue life uncertainty utilizing a computational framework is the primary objective of this thesis. Through the use of probabilistic design methodologies a process is developed to simulate uncertainties of internal heat transfer coefficient, which are …

Thermal Performance Of Cryogenic Multilayer Insulation At Various Layer Spacings, Wesley Louis Johnson Jan 2010

Thermal Performance Of Cryogenic Multilayer Insulation At Various Layer Spacings, Wesley Louis Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multilayer insulation (MLI) has been shown to be the best performing cryogenic insulation system at high vacuum (less than 10-3 torr), and is widely used on spaceflight vehicles. Over the past 50 years, many numerous investigations of MLI have yielded a general understanding of the many variables associated with MLI. MLI has been shown to be a function of variables such as warm boundary temperature, the number of reflector layers, and the spacer material in between reflectors, the interstitial gas pressure and the interstitial gas. Because conduction between reflectors increases with the thickness of the spacer material, and yet the …

On The Nature Of The Flow In A Separated Annular Diffuser, Jason Dunn Jan 2009

On The Nature Of The Flow In A Separated Annular Diffuser, Jason Dunn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combustor-diffuser system remains one of the most studied sections of the turbomachine. Most of these investigations are due to the fact that quite a bit of flow diffusion is required in this section as the high speed flow exits the compressor and must be slowed down to enter the combustor. Like any diffusion process there is the chance for the development of an unfavorable adverse pressure gradient that can lead to flow separation; a cause of drastic losses within a turbine. There are two diffusion processes in the combustor-diffuser system: The flow first exits the compressor into a pre-diffuser, …

Water Vapor And Carbon Dioxide Species Measurement In Narrow Channels, Derek Lambe Jan 2009

Water Vapor And Carbon Dioxide Species Measurement In Narrow Channels, Derek Lambe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel method has been implemented for measuring the concentration of gas species, water vapor and carbon dioxide, within a narrow channel flow field non-invasively using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) in conjunction with a laser modulated at a high frequency [Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS)] tuned to the ro-vibrational transition of the species. This technique measures the absorption profile which is a strong function of the species concentration across short path lengths and small time spans, as in PEM fuel cells during high load cycles. This method has been verified in a transparent circular flow 12 cm path length …
