A Comparison Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Computer Programs For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzle Flowfields, Kennedy B. Wilson Jr.
A Comparison Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Computer Programs For Hypersonic Propulsive Nozzle Flowfields, Kennedy B. Wilson Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This study compared the results of two computer programs, a flux- difference-splitting (FDS) Godunov-based scheme and the SCPAMjet Hypersonic Nozzle (SCHNOZ) paraobolized Navier-Stoke's code using MacCormack's method, applied to a hypersonic nozzle flowfield. Two different nozzle geometries were investigated at three Mach numbers along a typical hypersonic flight trajectory. A direct compariosn between the SCHNOZ and FDS programs was made by numerically solving the steady Euler equations using a frozen flow assumption in the nozzle. The frozen flow SCHNOZ code is currently 6 to 10 times more efficient in terms of computational time than the FDS frozen flow code. The …
Model Of A Nuclear Thermal Test Pipe Using Athena, Mark J. Dibben
Model Of A Nuclear Thermal Test Pipe Using Athena, Mark J. Dibben
Theses and Dissertations
Nuclear thermal propulsion offers significant improvements in rocket engine specific impulse over rockets employing chemical propulsion. The computer code ATHENA (Advanced Thermal Hydraulic Energy Network Analyzer) was used in a parametric analysis of fuelpipe. The fuelpipe is an annular particle bed fuel element of the reactor with radially inward flow of hydrogen through it. The outlet temperature of the hydrogen is parametrically related to key effects, including the effect of reactor power at two different pressure drops, the effect of the power coupling factor of the Annular Core Research Reactor, and the effect of hydrogen flow. Results show that the …
Static Pressure Measurements Of A Low Power Arcjet, Kevin P. Talley
Static Pressure Measurements Of A Low Power Arcjet, Kevin P. Talley
Theses and Dissertations
The NASA Lewis 1.2 kilowatt arcjet has been used for a number of performance and lifetime studies. This design was modified to obtain static pressure measurements at several locations along the arcjet nozzle. These measurements were taken at various propellant flow rates over most of the operational envelope of the thruster. Measured static pressure distributions are considerably higher than predicted by ID models and are proportional to the arc power. A simple thermodynamic model is also compared to the data, and is shown to match the slope of the data while overpredicting the pressure.
Application Of Low Thrust Propulsion Techniques To Satellite Attitude Control Systems, Jeffrey J. Abbott
Application Of Low Thrust Propulsion Techniques To Satellite Attitude Control Systems, Jeffrey J. Abbott
Theses and Dissertations
Equation of motion for a satellite controlled through continuous, low thrust propulsion systems are analyzed through numerical integration techniques. The equations of motion are derived using the Euler Moment Equations. The properties of the satellite model are based upon the Intelsat VII design of communications satellite. A simple rate and error feedback controller is used in providing active attitude control about two and three axes. Perturbation models are created and applied based upon the satellite model. Parameters varied include thrust levels and controller deadband widths. System response times, pointing accuracy, and total impulse required for attitude control are determined as …
Experimental Evaluation Of Design Variables For Two-Dimensional Confined Jet Thrust Vector Control Nozzles, Timothy M. Hawkes
Experimental Evaluation Of Design Variables For Two-Dimensional Confined Jet Thrust Vector Control Nozzles, Timothy M. Hawkes
Theses and Dissertations
An experimental study of the axial and vectoring performance of two - dimensional (2-D) confined jet thrust vector control (CJTVC) nozzles was performed. The effects of adding secondary injection ports and changing exit height and secondary injection port location were studied on several 2-D CJTVC nozzles. The axial and vectoring performance results for these nozzles were measured over a range of pressure ratios. An analytical method for predicting flow separation was found to be applicable to these nozzles. Guidelines for designing 2-D CJTVC nozzles, that can be vectored using secondary injection, were established.
Numerical Analysis Of An Axisymmetric Thrust Augmenting Ejector, Kenneth R. Gage
Numerical Analysis Of An Axisymmetric Thrust Augmenting Ejector, Kenneth R. Gage
Theses and Dissertations
Use of an ejector is an effective way to increase the thrust produced by a jet. In this thesis project an axisymmetric ejector concept which had been previously explored by experiment was numerically modeled. An existing axisymmetric, internal flow code based on the explicit MacCormack method was modified to incorporate primary nozzle structure and flow injection within the flowfield. Results were compared qualitatively and quantitatively with experimental results to verify the validity of the model. Internal flow structure, difficult to obtain in experiment, is easily examined. This code may be used for parametric analysis of such ejector performance parameters as …

Axisymmetric Thrust Augmenting Ejector With Discrete Primary Air Slot Nozzles, Steven G. Reznick, Milton E. Franke
Axisymmetric Thrust Augmenting Ejector With Discrete Primary Air Slot Nozzles, Steven G. Reznick, Milton E. Franke
AFIT Patents
A circular thrust augmenting ejector has an annular wall which defines a central passageway and a convergent contoured inlet section, a constant area cylindrical mixing section and a divergent conical diffuser outlet section. The inlet, mixing and outlet sections merge one into the next in axisymmetric serial relationship. The ejector also has a plurality of discrete primary nozzles arranged about the periphery of the annular wall at the entrance to the inlet section thereof for injecting a primary flow of high velocity air into the inlet section and thereby entraining a secondary flow of ambient air into the central passageway …

The Numerical Solution Of Two-Dimensional Fluid Flow Problems, E. David Spong
The Numerical Solution Of Two-Dimensional Fluid Flow Problems, E. David Spong
Masters Theses
"A numerical solution method is developed for the solution of two-dimensional, irrotational and compressible fluid flow problems. The partial differential equation, in terms of the velocity potential, describing the flow is replaced by finite difference equations and the resulting matrix is solved by Gaussian elimination. The method is successfully applied to two subsonic flow problems: a 7.5⁰ wedge and a 6⁰ wedge inlet. The method becomes invalid, as expected, with the appearance of sonic velocity in the flow field. An investigation of the definition of the singularities is made. This indicates that the best agreement with the experimental results for …
