Numerical Simulation Of Uva Ramjet/Scramjet Hypersonic Engine With Hydrogen-Air Combustion Using Wind-Us, Vishal Anand Bhagwandin
Numerical Simulation Of Uva Ramjet/Scramjet Hypersonic Engine With Hydrogen-Air Combustion Using Wind-Us, Vishal Anand Bhagwandin
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The internal flowpath of University of Virginia's Mach 5, direct-connect, dual-mode scramjet engine was simulated using Wind-US, a density-based Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes flow solver. Detailed flowfield simulation results are directly compared to experimental data to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and to provide insight into the flowfield behavior. Four hydrogen-air reaction mechanisms were initially assessed using the Burrows-Kurkov case. An Evans-Schexnayder, 7-specie, 8-reaction set with third body efficiencies was then selected for the scramjet simulations. The scramjet simulations included one fuel-off case and two reacting cases with different equivalence ratios, all with clean, non-vitiated air supply. The strong sensitivity …
Pylon Effects On A Scramjet Cavity Flameholder Flowfield, Andrew B. Freeborn
Pylon Effects On A Scramjet Cavity Flameholder Flowfield, Andrew B. Freeborn
Theses and Dissertations
Cavity flameholders in supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) combustors, while effective, fail to take advantage of the full combustor volume. Adding a pylon to the leading edge of a cavity flameholder generates a flowfield increasing mass exchange between the cavity and main combustor flow, increasing the mixing interface between flameholder products and main combustor flow, and exhibiting minimal Reynolds number effects. To demonstrate this modified flowfield driven by supersonic expansion behind the pylon, pylon-cavity flameholder flowfield data were obtained through a combination of wind tunnel experimentation and steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Flowfield effects of the pylon-cavity were examined at a …
Hypermixer Pylon Fuel Injection For Scramjet Combustors, Jason C. Doster
Hypermixer Pylon Fuel Injection For Scramjet Combustors, Jason C. Doster
Theses and Dissertations
Fueling the core airflow of a circular or elliptical scramjet combustor cross-section often requires intrusive geometries. Intrusive geometries can distribute the fuel evenly across the combustor cross-section and act as a flameholder for the fuel/air mixture. Compared to conventional transverse or angled wall injection, intrusive geometries allow easier penetration into the core combustor airflow and reduced fuel injection pressures. The design and testing of an intrusive pylon geometry for scramjet combustor fueling is the subject of this research. Three pylon configurations are compared: a basic pylon, a ramp pylon, and an alternating wedge pylon. All three pylon configurations exhibit the …

Modeling And Parameter Estimation Of Spacecraft Lateral Fuel Slosh, Yadira Rodriguez Chatman
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Predicting the effect of fuel slosh on spacecraft and launch vehicle attitude control systems has been a very important and challenging task and has been the subject of considerable research over the past years. Analytic determination of the slosh analog parameters has been met with mixed success and is made more difficult by the introduction of propellant management devices such as elastomeric diaphragms. The experimental set-up in this research incorporates a diaphragm in a simulated spacecraft fuel tank subjected to lateral slosh behavior. This research focuses on the parameter estimation of a SimMechanics model of the simulated spacecraft propellant tank …

The AFIT Combustion Optimization and Analysis Laser (COAL) lab’s modular design and state-of-the-art diagnostic systems make it a flexible and important facility for the analysis of combustion processes. The objectives of the current research are to install several enhancements in the lab, validate the laser diagnostic system, characterize the igniter for AFIT’s Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC) sections, and perform a non-intrusive laser diagnostic, performance, and high-speed video analysis of a flat-cavity UCC section. Validation of the laser system was accomplished using OH Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) in a laminar hydrogen-air flame produced by a Hencken burner. Results are compared to previous …
Cfd As Applied To The Design Of Short Takeoff And Landing Vehicles Using Circulation Control, Tyler M. Ball
Cfd As Applied To The Design Of Short Takeoff And Landing Vehicles Using Circulation Control, Tyler M. Ball
Master's Theses
The ability to predict the distance required for an aircraft to takeoff is an essential component of aircraft design. It involves aspects related to each of the major aircraft systems: aerodynamics, propulsion, configuration, structures, and stability and control. For an aircraft designed for short takeoffs and landings (STOL), designing the aircraft to provide a short takeoff distance, or more precisely the balanced field length (BFL), often leads to the use of a powered lift technique such as circulation control (CC). Although CC has been around for many years, it has never been used on a production aircraft. This is in …
Computational Design Of Upperstage Chamber, Aerospike, & Cooling Jacket For Dual-Expander Rocket Engine, David F. Martin Ii
Computational Design Of Upperstage Chamber, Aerospike, & Cooling Jacket For Dual-Expander Rocket Engine, David F. Martin Ii
Theses and Dissertations
To increase the performance of the current US satellite launch capability, new rocket designs must be undertaken. One concept that has been around since the 50s but yet to be utilized on a launch platform is the aerospike, or plug nozzle. The aerospike nozzle concept demonstrates globally better performance compared to a conventional bell nozzle, since the expansion of the jet is not bounded by a wall and therefore can adjust to the environment by changing the outer jet boundary. A dual-expander aerospike nozzle (DEAN) rocket concept would exceed the Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology initiative (IHPRPT) phase three …
Thermal Characterization Of A Hall Effect Thruster, Alex M. Bohnert
Thermal Characterization Of A Hall Effect Thruster, Alex M. Bohnert
Theses and Dissertations
The thermal characteristics of a Hall thruster directly influence thruster and spacecraft design. High temperatures affect the magnetic coil capabilities and cause higher insulator erosion rates, influencing both thruster performance and lifetime. The Hall thruster transfers heat through both radiation and conduction, and the spacecraft must handle this additional thermal energy. An infrared camera provides a non-intrusive method to analyze the thermal characteristics of an operational Hall thruster. This thesis contains the thermal analysis of a Busek Co. Inc. 200 W Hall thruster, using a FLIR ThermaCAM SC640 infrared camera. The Space Propulsion Analysis and System Simulator Laboratory at the …
Direct Initiation Through Detonation Branching In A Pulsed Detonation Engine, Alexander R. Hausman
Direct Initiation Through Detonation Branching In A Pulsed Detonation Engine, Alexander R. Hausman
Theses and Dissertations
Pulsed Detonation Engines are currently limited in operating frequency to the order of 40 Hz due to lengthy ignition and deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) times. An experimental study is conducted to determine the requirements necessary to eliminate these constraints through the concept of direct initiation. A branched detonation crossover setup is constructed and the operational requirements are determined. This research demonstrates the ability to directly initiate a detonation in a vacant tube from a detonation obtained through detonation branching. Using a hydrogen-air mixture, a tail-to-head detonation branching is achieved in which a detonation is seen to propagate from a …

Design Of An Oxygen Turbopump For A Dual Expander Cycle Rocket Engine, William S. Strain
Theses and Dissertations
The design of a pump intended for use with a dual expander cycle (LOX/H2) engine is presented. This arrangement offers a number of advantages over hydrogen expander cycles; among these are the elimination of gearboxes and inter-propellant purges and seals, an extended throttling range, and higher engine operating pressures and performance. The target engine has been designed to meet the needs of Phase III of the Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) program; thus, this pump must meet the program’s reliability, maintainability, and service life goals. In addition, this pump will be driven by warm gaseous oxygen. …

The Role Of Diffusive Transport On Low And Intermediate Temperature Hydrocarbon Oxidation: Numerical Simulations Using The Wang-Mou Mechanism, Howard Pearlman, Michael R. Foster
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
The spatio-temporal temperature and species concentration distributions associated with low and intermediate temperature hydrocarbon oxidation are computed using a global thermo kinetic scheme augmented with diffusive transport. The scheme used for the computations was proposed by Wang and Mou and is extended to include diffusion of species and heat. The conservation equations for species and energy are then derived and solved for a one-dimensional and an axisymmetric, spherical domain for temperatures ranging from 540 to 660 Kat subatmospheric pressures. The predictions are then used to develop ignition diagrams for different Lewis ( Le) numbers. Increasing Le is found to promote …

The Role Of Diffusive Transport On Low And Intermediate Temperature Hydrocarbon Oxidation: Closed Reactor Experiments Using Equimolar N-Butane + Oxygen Premixtures At Reduced-Gravity, Howard Pearlman, Michael R. Foster
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Experiments were conducted in a closed, spherical reactor aboard NASA's KC-135 reduced-gravity aircraft using an equimolar n-C4H10 + 0 2 premixture ( Le = 1.3) at subatmospheric · pressures to compliment model predictions and further explore the reactive-diffusive structure of cool flames and ignitions. The pressure and radial temperature histories were recorded and analyzed for different initial conditions. In addition, the visible light emission from excited formaldehyde was recorded using an intensified video camera and was observed to be radially symmetric in all cases. Unexpectedly, however, the measured temperature distributions during (and after the passage of) the cool flames and …

Optimization Of Zero Net-Mass Flow Actuators For Aero-Optics Applications, Moira L. Denatale, Jonathan M. Mihaly
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Using experimental methods, zero net-mass flow actuators were optimized to manipulate flow around an airborne laser turret in order to reduce destructive aero-optics effects. Synthetic jets are created by 50 mm and 27 mm piezoelectric disk actuators. Our optimization process involved identifying an actuator’s cavity size, driving frequency, and amplitude to achieve the strongest, most consistent jet possible. The effects of driving a single actuator versus driving two actuators in or out of phase with one another were also investigated. An initial cavity depth was determined using the Helmholtz resonator cavity approximation which estimates the ideal cavity depth for a …

Comparative Analysis Of A High Bypass Turbofan Using A Pulsed Detonation Combustor, Ionio Q. Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
It has been proposed that the implementation of a pulsed detonation combustor in a high-bypass turbofan engine would result in an engine that is both more efficient and more reliable. The validity of the performance claims are evaluated based on a comparison between the baseline and hybrid turbofans. The hybrid pulsed detonation engine was modeled in the Numerical Propulsion Simulation System (NPSS) and shares a common architecture with the baseline turbofan model, except that the combustor of the baseline engine is replaced with a pulsed detonation combustor. Detonation effects are calculated using a closed form solution of the Chapman-Jouguet Mach …

Cool Flame Propagation Speeds, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman
Cool Flame Propagation Speeds, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Cool flames are studied at reduced-gravity in a closed, unstirred, spherical reactor to minimize complexities associated with natural convection. Under such conditions, transport is controlled by diffusive fluxes and the flames are observed to propagate radially outward from the center of the reactor toward the wall. Intensified video records are obtained and analyzed to determine the flame radius as a function of time for different vessel temperatures (593–623 K) and initial pressures (55.2–81.4 kPa) using an equimolar (Ø = 5) propane-oxygen premixture. Polynomial-fits are applied to the data and differentiated to determine the cool flame propagation speeds. In nearly …

Design And Numerical Simulation Of Two Dimensional Ultra Compact Combustor Model Sections For Experimental Observation Of Cavity-Vane Flow Interactions, David S. Moenter
Theses and Dissertations
An improved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed for numerical simulation of the Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) concept to enhance turbulent flow characterization of the circumferentially traveling, centrifugal-force enhanced combustion, cavity flow into the engine main flow passage via a radial cavity in the turbine axial guide vanes. The CFD model uses a dense grid on a 60° periodic, axisymmetric combustor section, with the RNG κ-ε turbulence model to resolve turbulent flow details. An overall analysis and performance evaluation of the experimentally tested UCC configuration and an axially shortened cavity baseline configuration was conducted at various experimentally documented operating …
Assessing The Potential For Improved Scramjet Performance Through Application Of Electromagnetic Flow Control, Martin F. Lindsey
Assessing The Potential For Improved Scramjet Performance Through Application Of Electromagnetic Flow Control, Martin F. Lindsey
Theses and Dissertations
Hypersonic flight using scramjet propulsion bridges the gap between turbojets and rockets. Recent efforts focus on magnetogasdynamic (MGD) flow control to mitigate the problems of high thermomechanical loads and low efficiencies associated with scramjets. This research is the first flight-scale, three-dimensional computational analysis of a realistic scramjet to assess how MGD flow control improves scramjet performance. Developing a quasi-one dimensional design tool culminated in the first open source scramjet geometry. This geometry was tested with the Air Force Research Laboratory's electromagnetic computational code. To increase fidelity, an algorithm was developed to incorporate thermochemistry, resulting in the only open-source model of …
Cycle Performance Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Supercritical Fuel Injection, Timothy M. Helfrich
Cycle Performance Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Supercritical Fuel Injection, Timothy M. Helfrich
Theses and Dissertations
Pulse detonation engines (PDE) rely on rapid ignition and formation of detonation waves. Because hydrocarbon fuels are composed typically of long carbon chains that must be reduced in the combustion process, it would be beneficial to create such reduction prior to injection of fuel into the engine. This study focused on PDE operation enhancements using dual detonation tube, concentric-counter-flow heat exchangers to elevate the fuel temperature up to supercritical temperatures. Variation of several operating parameters included fuel type (JP-8, JP-7, JP-10, RP-1, JP-900, and S-8), ignition delay, frequency, internal spiral length, and purge fraction. To quantify the performance, four key …
Optimization Of A Low Heat Load Turbine Nozzle Guide Vane, Jamie J. Johnson
Optimization Of A Low Heat Load Turbine Nozzle Guide Vane, Jamie J. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Often turbomachinery airfoils are designed with aerodynamic performance foremost in mind rather than component durability. However, future aircraft systems require ever increasing levels of gas-turbine inlet temperature causing the durability and reliability of turbine components to be an ever more important design concern. As a result, the need to provide improved heat transfer prediction and optimization methods presents itself. Here, an effort to design an airfoil with minimized heat load is reported. First, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow solver was validated over different flow regimes as well as varying boundary conditions against extensive data available in literature published by the …
Characterization Of Pulse Detonation Engine Performance With Varying Free Stream Stagnation Pressure Levels, Wesley R. Knick
Characterization Of Pulse Detonation Engine Performance With Varying Free Stream Stagnation Pressure Levels, Wesley R. Knick
Theses and Dissertations
A pulse detonation engine operates on the principle that a fuel-air mixture injected into a tube will ignite and undergo a transition from a deflagration to a detonation and exit the tube at supersonic velocities. Studies in the field of combustion have shown that both ignition time and deflagration to detonation transition time can vary as a function of pressure. It can be hypothesized that if ignition and deflagration to detonation transition times can be reduced by increasing the free stream stagnation pressure level of the tube, it would then be possible to shorten the detonation tube length and increase …

This study investigated the design parameters necessary for the construction and use of a testing facility built to test the combustor section of engines. User inputs were acquired by interview and used in the decisions made in arrangement of pieces of machinery and how different systems were to interact. The design was then carried out as the various parts of the facility were built and installed. Software was designed which controlled the different parts of the combustion process and monitored the different products of combustion as well as the properties of the air and fuel used in the combustion. These …
Cool Flames At Terrestrial, Partial, And Near-Zero Gravity, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman
Cool Flames At Terrestrial, Partial, And Near-Zero Gravity, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Natural convection plays an important role in all terrestrial, Lunar, and Martian-based, unstirred, static reactor cool flame and low-temperature autoignitions, since the Rayleigh number (Ra) associated with the self-heating of the reaction exceeds the critical Ra (approximately 600) for onset of convection. At near-zero gravity, Ra < 600 can be achieved and the effects of convection suppressed. To systematically vary the Ra without varying the mixture stoichiometry, reactor pressure, or vessel size, cool flames are studied experimentally in a closed, unstirred, static reactor subject to different gravitational accelerations (terrestrial, 1g; Martian, 0.38g; Lunar, 0.16g; a n dr e - duced gravity, ∼10−2g). Representative results show the evolution of the visible light emission using an equimolar n-butane:oxygen premixture at temperatures ranging from 320 to 350 ◦C (593–623 K) at subatmospheric pressures. For representative reduced-gravity, spherically propagating cool flames, the flame radius based on the peak light intensity is plotted as a function of time and the flame radius (and speed) is calculated from a polynomial fit to data. A skeletal chemical kinetic Gray-Yang model developed previously for a one-dimensional, reactive– diffusive system by Fairlie and co-workers is extended to a two-dimensional axisymmetric, spherical geometry. The coupled species, energy, and momentum equations are solved numerically and the spatio-temporal variations in the temperature profiles are presented. A qualitative comparison is made with the experimental results.

Performance Measurements Of Direct Air Injection In A Cavity-Based Flameholder For A Supersonic Combustor, Scott G. Edens
Theses and Dissertations
For several years the Air Force Research Lab Propulsion Directorate has been studying the difficulties in fueling supersonic combustion ramjet engines with hydrocarbon based fuels. Recent investigations have focused on the use of direct air injection into a directly-fueled cavity-based flameholder. Direct air injection has been shown qualitatively to be a valuable tool for improving cavity combustion. Little quantitative data is available that characterizes the performance of cavity-based flameholders. The objective of this research was to quantitatively determine the specific advantages and disadvantages of the direct air injection scheme. This was accomplished via intrusive probing into a supersonic free stream …
