The application of active noise control to reduce cabin noise in single engine, general aviation aircraft is investigated through the use of the 'filtered x' least mean square algorithm and a simple acoustic feedforward method to generate a reference signal is tested. The system is designed to utilize one reference signal and up to two feedback signals and two audio speakers. The feedforward system consists of a microphone placed in close proximity to the front windshield and isolated from the cabin noise. First, a newly developed interactive surface generation tool is described for the conceptual design phase and aerodynamic shape optimization of aircraft. The new design tool is called Interactive Rapid Airplane Parametric Input Design (IRAPID) for fuselage and wing body configurations, and Blended Wing Body (BWB) generator for flying wing configurations. The development of the software is based on the RAPID methodology, which incorporates a partial differential equation approach to surface design. By incorporating physical airplane design parameters into the boundaty conditions of the partial differential equation, the solution surface of a wing configuration is generated. The impetus of this technical document is to report results of aerothermodynamic cooling of a scramjet nozzle under favorable pressure gradients. The goals of film cooling are to protect the nozzle skin from the high enthalpy combustor flow, reduce regenerative cooling requirements, and decrease nozzle skin friction. A hypersonic nozzle configuration for which experimental data exists was selected as the basis of this numerical study. As a first step, the numerical results of film cooling along a flat plate are compared to previous literature to validate the numerical model. A flush-mounted heat exchanger concept, using the wing surface to dissipate heat, is investigated as a lower drag alternative to conventional ducted plate-fin radiators. A feasibility analysis is made for an unmanned high-altitude aircraft which will reach altitudes up to 25 kilometers. A computer code is used to calculate approximate heat transfer coefficients over the airfoil's surface. A model is tested in the Old Dominion University subsonic wind tunnel to verify the results of the computer code. The results indicate that a flush mounted heat exchanger design is able to provide 20 to 100 percent of the required heat dissipation …

Multiple model adaptive control (MMAC) is investigated using the high-fidelity, nonlinear, six-degree-of-freedom Simulation Rapid-Prototyping Facility VISTA F-16. Detection of single actuator and sensor failures is considered, with an MMAC algorithm initially pursued which allows a controller specifically designed for each particular failure condition to replace the standard F-16 Block 40 flight control system (FCS) once the failure is detected. The synthesis of certain discrete-time LQG/PI controllers (those using control variables linearly dependent on state derivatives) is shown to be unattainable due to numerical difficulties. The problem of synthesizing a transport aircraft at the conceptual design level is considered. A direct sizing algorithm that does not require iteration is developed. Such direct synthesis methods can be used as important building blocks in an aircraft optimization process. New statistical equations based on current aircraft are derived for approximating the widths and lengths of the cabin and fuselage. A more accurate static thrust over gross weight, which is based on the equations of motion specified by the FAR part 25 climb requirements, is presented. Aircraft pitch response is a vital element of piloted vehicle flying qualities. There has been controversy over both the form and the substance of the requirements for short-term pitch response. Currently, MIL-STD- 1797A offers six different methods for evaluating short-term pitch response. These six methods often give conflicting results. Two methods are analyzed in this thesis - the Neal-Smith criteria and the ωspΤθ2, ςsp, τθ criteria. This research investigated a heuristic approach to schedule aircraft for the channel cargo system of the Unit States Air Forces Air Mobility Command AMC. Given cargo frequency of visit requirements, a fleet of aircraft, and possible routes, the objective of this research was to develop, implement, and test an iterative procedure to efficiently schedule and load aircraft in order to maximize the flow of cargo through the channel cargo system. To effectively compare different sets of available aircraft, it is necessary to find the apportionment that maximizes the effectiveness of each set of aircraft. This research effort uses an unclassified TAC THUNDER scenario to show how an analyst can use response surface methodology RSM techniques to estimate the relationship between aircraft apportionment and campaign outcomes. The optimal apportionments for one phase of a hypothetical conflict was found by using a steepest-gradient search of the constrained response surfaces. The results are illustrated by illuminating charts showing the various relationships between the number of aircraft in the theater and measures of effectiveness …

An advanced low-order panel method, VSAERO, is applied to a full-configuration transport aircraft. Wing pressure distributions as well as lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficients calculated for the full computational configuration are compared with experimental data. In addition, partial configurations are evaluated computationally to determine the relevance of certain complex aircraft components to the computations. It is shown that the wing-surface pressure distributions and pitching moment coefficient are well predicted by VSAERO. The lift coefficient is consistently overpredicted by the code.

This project has provided me with endless intrigue. In considering the problem of guiding a hyper-velocity missile from a moving platform to a moving target, a common perception said it was just another Kalman Filtration design challenge. I began with lofty intentions of running a full up extended Kalman filter simulation but I became enthralled with the limited work available on the physical limitations of basic guidance algorithms. This became the emphasis of this project. The best filter scheme cannot overcome a guidance algorithms physical limitation. A wind tunnel model based on a trail rotor vehicle concept was tested for wing flutter in the subsonic flow regime. The wind tunnel model was flutter tested in the forward flight mode only. From this test it was determined that this conceptual vehicle may be susceptible to wing flutter. However, the flutter encountered was not catastrophic but was of the limited amplitude type. The trailing rotor blades were found to have a positive aerodynamic damping effect on flutter. The flutter mechanism for each flutter point was due to a coupling of the first wing bending and first wing torsion …

On The Maximum Range Of Flying Wings, Peter J. Torvik

The classical equations for determining the maximum range of aircraft with propeller and jet propulsion systems are reviewed, along with previous work conducted to determine the optimal division of aircraft volume between fuselage and wing components. That the jet powered flying wing configuration produces optimal range only for limited geometries is confirmed. The optimal range of aircraft employing high bypass jet engines is explored, and found to lead to a broader range of design parameters for which the flying wing design produces maximum range than is the case when a pure jet system is used.
