Truss Alignment Tool, Jason Hedin
Truss Alignment Tool, Jason Hedin
All Undergraduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to follow the engineering process from start to finish, and create a fully functioning truss alignment tool that has been designed, constructed, and tested successfully. The first phase involves the design of the truss alignment tool. The main design requirements of the tool includes taking an input force of 60 pounds and outputting the 630 pounds of clamping force needed to realign a set of two stacked trusses and pull their bottom edges flush. The second phase involves the construction of the tool. This involves all machining processes associated with the cutting, shaping, and …

Capstone Design Expo Posters
According to the CDC, every year approximately two million people are diagnosed with some type of cancer in the United States alone. Common procedures for cancer treatment include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Hyperthermia, an effective collateral treatment, is not included as part of regular cancer care. This is primarily due to its high cost.
Clinical studies for hyperthermia coupled with chemotherapy/radiation therapy have indicated up to a three-fold increase in survival rates of cancer patients. Unfortunately, current microwave hyperthermia systems are bulky, expensive and require special infrastructure in hospitals thus driving up the cost. The objective of this project …

Specification Recommendation For Use Of High Performance Repair Material, Jennifer Woods
Specification Recommendation For Use Of High Performance Repair Material, Jennifer Woods
ETD Archive
The State of Ohio and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) have sought out ways to extend the life of the repair materials used by their construction crews, specifically, using high performance repair materials for the purposes of patching worn down or cracked sections of highways and bridge decks. Ohio is known for its frequent changes in weather, with freeze-thaw cycles occurring multiple times throughout the year. These cycles affect the lifespan of the repair material and create more maintenance for the DOT. Products that combat this problem were chosen, installed and examined over a year period to determine which …

Can A Five Minute, Three Question Survey Foretell First-Year Engineering Student Performance And Retention?, Stephanie M. Gratiano, William J. Palm
Engineering, Computing & Construction Management Faculty Publications
This research paper examines first-year student performance and retention within engineering. A considerable body of literature has reported factors influencing performance and retention, including high school GPA and SAT scores,1,2,3 gender,4 self-efficacy,1,5 social status,2,6,7 hobbies,4 and social integration.6,7 Although these factors can help explain and even partially predict student outcomes, they can be difficult to measure; typical survey instruments are lengthy and can be invasive of student privacy. To address this limitation, the present paper examines whether a much simpler survey can be used to understand student motivations and anticipate student outcomes.
The survey was administered to 347 students in …
Assembly Level Clock Glitch Insertion Into An Xmega Mcu, Nigamantha Gopala Chakravarthi
Assembly Level Clock Glitch Insertion Into An Xmega Mcu, Nigamantha Gopala Chakravarthi
ETD Archive
This thesis proposes clock-glitch fault injection technique to inject glitches into the clock signal running in a microcontroller unit and studying its effects on different assembly level instructions. It focusses mainly on the effect of clock glitches over the execution, sub-execution and pre-execution cycles of the test instructions and also finds the delay between the actual position of glitch insertion and the trigger being set for the glitch insertion. The instructions used in this work are provided by Atmel which classifies them according to their type of operation. These instructions are here further grouped depending on the number of clock …
The Behavior Of Simply Supported Plates Under Extreme Shear Loading, Mhd Ammar Hafez
The Behavior Of Simply Supported Plates Under Extreme Shear Loading, Mhd Ammar Hafez
ETD Archive
Steel plates are planar structural elements with one dimension significantly smaller than the others. These elements may fail due to either material yielding or buckling. Buckling is a sudden failure mode, which is not desirable in structural engineering applications. Buckling is called an “elastic buckling” when it happens before material yielding, and is termed as “plastic buckling” if it happens after material yielding. The focus of this thesis is on shear plates, which are plates that are primarily subjected to shear loads. Several studies were conducted to increase the elastic buckling capacity of plates by adding stiffeners to plates. However, …
Tabletop Die Cast System, Brad C. Barringer
Tabletop Die Cast System, Brad C. Barringer
All Undergraduate Projects
The project was to design, manufacture, and test a tabletop die cast system to be used as lab equipment in MET 257 – Casting Processes. The motivation for this project was the MET 257 – Casting Processes instructor’s desire to physically demonstrate the die casting process, but they were unable to find a system that would meet all of their requirements. They required a system design that was small, portable, would fit in the foundries limited space, had an open concept to allow students to see what was occurring during the pour, and compatibility with the foundries current equipment. The …
The Effect Of Impeded Information Sharing And Transparency On Power Differentials And Organizational Dysfunction, Mustafa Canan, A. Sousa-Poza
The Effect Of Impeded Information Sharing And Transparency On Power Differentials And Organizational Dysfunction, Mustafa Canan, A. Sousa-Poza
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
The constituents of an organization have to interact with each other. The purpose of the interaction is to maintain flow of information, to exchange knowledge, to share individual situational awareness, and to give rise to an organizational shared awareness. The rate of information exchange is constrained by multiple factors and impacts the effectiveness of the communication in an organization. For instance, extensive communication may not result in informativeness all the time. Communication channels induce constraints between the interacting agents. These constraints can impede information flow. Impeding information flow will result in an accumulation of knowledge with a particular agent. Consequently, …
Physical Modeling Of The Atmospheric Boundary Layer In The University Of New Hampshire’S Flow Physics Facility, Stephanie Gilooly, Gregory Taylor-Power
Physical Modeling Of The Atmospheric Boundary Layer In The University Of New Hampshire’S Flow Physics Facility, Stephanie Gilooly, Gregory Taylor-Power
Honors Theses and Capstones
The atmospheric boundary layer is the lowest part of the atmosphere, and is defined by a region from the surface of the earth to approximately 500-1000m altitude in which air velocity changes from zero at the surface to the velocity of the wind at a certain altitude. The type of atmospheric boundary layer is characterized by the terrain it encounters, varying from open sea and mud flats to suburban areas and city centers with high- and low-rise buildings. The goal of this project is to generate different types of atmospheric boundary layers for scale model testing in the UNH Flow …
What Do We Know About Eesd And How Do We Know It?, Eddie Conlon, Iacovos Nicolaou, Brian Bowe
What Do We Know About Eesd And How Do We Know It?, Eddie Conlon, Iacovos Nicolaou, Brian Bowe
Conference papers
Huckle (2004) has argued that critical realism (CR) can provide a philosophical framework for higher education for sustainability. This paper reflects on the process of researching EESD in the Irish context and the usefulness of our approach which used mixed methods and drew on CR as its guiding philosophy. We will argue that aspects of the CR approach: its emphasis on a depth ontology, the search for causal mechanisms, its model of agency/structure relations and its emphasis on the combination of extensive and intensive methods provide tools for exploring EESD as a system. CR requires us to focus on “deeper …
