Discrete Phase Simulations Of Drilled Cuttings Transport Process In Highly Deviated Wells, Doguhan Yilmaz Jan 2013

Discrete Phase Simulations Of Drilled Cuttings Transport Process In Highly Deviated Wells, Doguhan Yilmaz

LSU Master's Theses

Transporting drilled cuttings from the bottomhole to the surface becomes more difficult and problematic in highly deviated wells than in vertical wells. Cuttings tend to settle down on the low side of the annulus typically in the form of a bed which can cause further problems. The height of this bed depends on many parameters such as annular domain geometry, drilling fluid density and rheology, annular flow rate, drill pipe rotation speed, cuttings size, shape, and their density. Prediction of the stationary cuttings bed height with respect to these aforementioned parameters is thus necessary to optimize the range of the …

Computational Analysis Of Vortex Structures In Flapping Flight, Zongxian Liang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Vortex structures and vortical formation in flapping flight are directly related to the force production. To analyze the connection between vortex structures and aerodynamic performance of flapping flight, we have developed highly efficient algorithms for large-scale flow simulations with moving and deforming bodies. To further understand the underlying mechanisms of force generation caused by the coherent structures of the vortex formation, a new analysis method has been developed to measure the influence of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) modes on aerodynamic forces.

It is challenging to finish three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of insect flight in a limited amount of time. …

Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom Jan 2013

Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Therapeutic proteins are used to successfully treat hemophilia, Crohn's Disease, diabetes, and cancer. Recent product recalls have occurred because of sub-visible particle formation resulting from the inherent instability of proteins. It has been suggested that particle formation is associated with late stage processing steps of filling, shipping, and delivery. Previous work at the University of Denver demonstrated that fluid cavitation can generate a large number of sub-visible protein particles in ultra clean formulations, but that mitigation can be achieved with fluid property manipulation. The goal of this research was to (1) assess the risk of cavitation under common pharmaceutical manufacturing …

Sedimentation Of Swarms Of Particles At Low And Moderate Reynolds Numbers, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni Jan 2013

Sedimentation Of Swarms Of Particles At Low And Moderate Reynolds Numbers, Oladapo Olanrewaju Ayeni

LSU Master's Theses

The sedimentation of a cloud of particles in a viscous fluid at low and moderate Reynolds numbers has been studied using an Eulerian-Lagrangian multiphase flow approach. We looked at the volume fraction dependence of the settling cloud and find a similar dependence in the simulations as in the theoretical predictions of (Nitsche and Batchelor 1997). The average cloud settling velocity and the velocity fluctuations around this average are found to have a functional dependence on ö^1/3 at negligible Reynolds number. The velocity fluctuations display strong anisotropy with the magnitude of the vertical component almost three times the magnitude of the …

Methods For Identifying Acoustic Emissions From The Front Face Of A Small Piezoelectric Blower, Brad K. Solomon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on identifying acoustic noise generating components in piezoelectric blowers through transverse velocity measurements and the development of a numerical fluid model. Piezoelectric ceramics have proven useful for many industries and areas of research involving: high precision actuators, noise control, ultrasonic devices, and many other areas. As of late, a unique adaptation of piezoelectric ceramics is surfacing in the area of pumping and cooling. Air pumps that use these ceramics replace the traditional electric motor, resulting in lower power consumption, less moving parts, constant pressure gradients, lower overall weight, and a low profile. The current drawback of this …

The Extraction Of Shock Waves And Separation And Attachment Lines From Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations Using Subjective Logic, Matthew C. Lively

Theses and Dissertations

The advancement of computational fluid dynamics to simulate highly complex fluid flow situations have allowed for simulations that require weeks of computation using expensive high performance clusters. These simulations often generate terabytes of data and hinder the design process by greatly increasing the post-processing time. This research discusses a method to extract shock waves and separation and attachment lines as the simulation is calculating and as a post-processing step. Software agents governed by subjective logic were used to make decisions about extracted features in converging and converged data sets. Two different extraction algorithms were incorporated for shock waves and separation …

Butterfly valves are commonly used to control fluid flow inside of piping systems. A butterfly valve typically consists of a metal disc formed around a central shaft, which acts as its axis of rotation. As a butterfly valve is rotated open, fluid is able to more readily flow past the valve. A butterfly valve’s design is important to understand and is commonly characterized by its own performance factors. How a butterfly valve will perform, while in operation at different opening angles and under different types of flow, is critical information for individuals planning and installing piping systems involving the valve. …

The Effects Of Micro- And Macro-Scale Geometric Parameters On Performance Of The Pleated Aerosol Filters, Shahryar Fotovati Mar 2012

The Effects Of Micro- And Macro-Scale Geometric Parameters On Performance Of The Pleated Aerosol Filters, Shahryar Fotovati

Theses and Dissertations

While most filters are made of pleated fibrous media, almost all existing theories of aerosol filtration are developed for flat media placed perpendicular to the air flow. Expressions developed for flat sheet media do not provide accurate information directly useful for designing a pleated filter, and therefore, most progress made in developing pleated filters is based on empiricism. This study is aimed at establishing an enabling knowledge that allows for a better design and optimization of pleated aerosol filters. This study is focused on developing a predictive simulation method that accounts for the influence of a filter’s micro-scale geometric parameters, …

Computational Investigation Of Ethanol And Bifuel Feasibility In Solstice Engine, Adam Michael Blake

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine enables an increased fuel efficiency and higher power output than a conventional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. By injecting pressurized fuel straight into each cylinder of an internal-combustion engine, the degree of fuel atomization is increased, as well as the fuel vaporization rate. In order to further harness the effects of direct injection, ethanol is implemented as a fuel. The cooling effect of ethanol fuel droplets changing to vapor inside the combustion chamber facilitates a higher compression ratio, thus increasing engine power and efficiency. Three dimensional computational simulation is used to investigate the feasibility …

Construction Of Polynomials And Linear Weight Calculation For Weno Schemes, Jacob Alan Nelson

All ETDs from UAB

Many applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) require higher order spatial accuracy to resolve the flow field. A few examples of these complex flows include heat transfer problems associated with hypersonic flows, flapping wing simulations, turbo-machineries, rotorcrafts, aero-acoustic problems, and transition to turbulence. Methods being used within the CFD community to achieve higher order spatial accuracy include discontinuous Galerkin schemes, weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes (WENO), and spectral volume (SV) schemes. Complex flow problems involving complex geometries may necessitate the use of generalized grids for the discretization of the domain. Generalized grids contain elements of multiple types and allow for a …

Re-entry vehicles designed for space exploration are usually equipped with thermal protection systems made of ablative material. In order to properly model and predict the aerothermal environment of the vehicle, it is imperative to account for the gases produced by ablation processes. In the case of charring ablators, where an inner resin is pyrolyzed at a relatively low temperature, the composition of the gas expelled into the boundary layer is complex and may lead to thermal chemical reactions that cannot be captured with simple ow chemistry models. In order to obtain better predictions, an appropriate gas ow chemistry model needs …
